Pipe Dream

She sits, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket with a cup full of jasmine tea. She watches as everyone celebrates the New Year. Some people go out to dinner with their family or friends. Others prefer to celebrate by going to a party and getting piss drunk. She watched all of this from her seat on the balcony of her one bedroom apartment. She watched as fireworks were lit, as people partied, as they were preparing to countdown the seconds.

Kagome raised her mug to her lips but didn't drink any of the tea. The cup had long since gone cold. She really used it as a hand warmer anyways. It was freezing outside. The biting cold stung her cheeks and nose. She didn't notice.

She fiddled with the necklace that hung around her neck. The large pink orb, the Shikon no Tama, coruscated brightly in the light of the fireworks. It had been so long ago when it had been in pieces and scattered across the land on the other side of the well. So long ago when she had at last put the shards together, defeated Naraku, and left her surrogate family. But she still remembers.

She still feels the nostalgia. She knew she should have stayed. She should have visited even though she had no purpose for traveling through the well. She should have gone back every so often, back to the side of the well where everything was green. Where the air was so pure, so fresh and so easy to breathe that you wouldn't even realize you were doing it. Back to where all her friends were, the people who stuck by her in life or death situations. The ones who protected her and had fought alongside her. Back to where he was.

When they were traveling together, Kagome had often fantasized about life after they defeated Naraku. Her and Inuyasha would get together, declare their feelings, and they would live together. They'd have their own little hut just at the edge of the forest, so that it's close to the river but still walking distance to the village. And they would have three children, a girl and two boys. Miroku and Sango would live close too. Their children would play together and grow up together. And everything would be perfect. It was a fool's paradise.

For a while after the final battle, Kagome had traveled across time whenever she could. She balanced studies, friends, and family. It had worked for a time. But then her schedule became hectic. Graduating was no longer about getting good grades. It was about getting top grades, showing leadership skills, and doing extracurricular activities. Kagome had to spend every minute of her day trying her best to graduate on time. She had been so behind that receiving her diploma had been inefficacious. However, through sheer will alone Kagome managed to make it work. She graduated with her friends and she was accepted in to a good university.

Of course, by the time of the commencement ceremony, she had already neglected the well far too exceedingly. Caught up in her workload, she never once thought about the other side of the well. She was way too engrossed in succeeding to realize that she was drifting away from her friends.

She had wended so far away that going back would have been awkward. Inuyasha hadn't come to get her during this time. She had explained her situation beforehand. And since he didn't have the excuse of needing her to collect jewel shards, his pride wouldn't let him cross time to see her.

She could still go back. She still had time to return to the place she yearned for. But she knew she wouldn't. She would not go back. She'd be estranged. She no longer belonged with them.

10, 9, 8…

She still thought about the feudal era often because even though she no longer had a connection there, she still remembers.

7, 6, 5…

And she still hopes. Even after all these years, she still held onto the silly dream of the hut by the forest. Even though she knew it is impervious, she can't help but wish that maybe one day he would come and whisk her away.

He would take her in his arms and they would go back. And her friends would accept her back into their lives. She would return like the prodigal son. It would be like it was back then. Nothing would have changed.

4, 3, 2…

Again…wishful thinking.

One.

Kagome watched the display of fireworks. They exploded in to the air. The sparks hit the sky and perforated.

She watched them, as the sparks slowly drifted apart.

She watched as they drifted downwards.
