Thus departs a king, from whence comes another?
- William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar
It was over. The final battle. Naraku was defeated and all was restored to the way it was. No more kazaana, vengeance was theirs. But, like all victories, this one came with a price. Quite a heavy price. One of their own had been wounded, mortally. They all knew he didn't have much longer, and as he lay on the blood-soaked ground, his head resting in his mates lap, they gathered around, waiting to hear his final words.
All our tears have reached the moon
Part of me will live in you
Way down deep inside your heart
The days keep coming without fail
A new wind is gonna find your sail
That's where your journey starts
"My…friends," he gasped. "You have all been good to me. I don't know if…I can ever repay the debt I owe you. For your companionship, your virtue and your attempts to make me feel," he chuckled. "As futile as those attempts might have been." They all smiled sadly. "You must find a way, my dear, dear friends to keep going. Help my mate get through this undoubtedly difficult period. I trust her to you."
You'll find better love
Strong as it ever was
Deep as the river runs
Warm as the morning sun
Please, remember me
The black-haired girl kneeling next to him exhaled dry sobs. There were no more tears left. Too many good and faithful comrades had fallen. And now, Kami was cruel enough to take away the only man she had ever loved, ever would love. She swept her raven-black hair behind her ear. Her glittering blue eyes shone with unshed tears. "Sir!" a small green toad demon stood at attention next to the remaining brother.
"What is it Jaken?" asked the brother. "Can't you see we have a bit of a crisis to deal with?"
"It is quite evident, your Lordship, but the wolf demon wishes to speak to you." Kouga lay on his back in the mud, a spear protruding from his abdomen.
"Your brother was a g…good man."
"I'm not sure if he would appreciate that coming from you. He was, after all, demon."
"Ah yes, the Sh…Shikon No Tama. I wanted to talk to you about that. "
"Kouga, I don't know if this is the best time. You should save your strength. We can heal you." The wolf youkai smiled sadly.
"No, I believe I am beyond your help. Just…just t…tell him," the wounded demon stopped for breath. "Just tell him he made the right choice." Kouga sputtered for a second and coughed up a handful of blood. "S…see you on the o…ther side." And he was gone.
Just like the waves down be the shore
We're gonna keep on coming back for more
`Cause we don't ever wanna stop
Out in this brave new world we see
Oh, the valleys and the peaks
And I can see you on the top
`Yes,' thought the demon, `See you on the other side, old friend.' He closed the wolf's eyes and said a short prayer.
Returning to his brother's deathbed, he found that he was on his last few breaths.
"Never forget." He whispered. "Please, remember me."
"Always my love!" shouted his mate. The others did not speak, but knew they were all thinking the same thing. After so many adventures, it was tearing them apart to see their good friend go.
Remember me when you're out walking
When the snow falls high outside your door
Late at night when you're not sleeping
And moonlight falls across your floor
And you can't see me anymore
He passed silently. Like a god. And as his spirit ascended to heaven, they all thought they heard something. Something that sounded like a whisper in each of their ears. Softly humming an old tune, carrying a fresh scent, and reassuring them all. His mate wept silently, finally finding her tears. She cried for the past, the present and the future. She cried for a king, Sesshoumaru. She cried for all of the broken hearts and shattered lives. She cried for all of them.
