Chapter 3: The Subtlety of War

 

"Where am I?" Kagome said when she woke up. "And what happened to my head. It feels like it got run over by a truck."

 

"Sorry about that. I guess we went a little overboard with your antibiotics," a man in a doctor's uniform said.

 

"What antibiotics?" Kagome got a very confused look on her face. "And, where are we? I can't remember anything."

 

"You are blessed to be in the great home of Naraku."

 

"Naraku? Who is he? Why won't anybody tell me anything! I just want to know what's going on here." Kagome burst out crying.

 

"Naraku…Naraku is a man with a mission. He's trying to get over the death of his father and maintain his family name. He needs more power and…more control," the doctor said thoughtfully.

 

"And what do I have to do with this?" Kagome asked warily, her cheeks still tearstained.

 

"You know how I said that Naraku is a man with a mission?" Kagome nodded. "He isn't…he isn't really a man."

 

"But, if he isn't a man; then what is he?"

 

"Naraku is, what is known as, a demon."

 

"You're kidding, right?" When the doctor didn't respond, and no one burst out laughing, Kagome realized that he was dead serious. "But, what does he want with me?" It looked like the doctor would say something, but Kagome continued, "You said he wanted more power…how could I help him get more power? I mean, even if he had kidnapped me and put a ransom on me, I'm not worth that much money."

 

"I think there is something you need to know. You are a miko." Kagome's head shot up as she remembered all that had transpired before she woke up.

 

Pretending she didn't recognize the term, Kagome simply asked, "What, or who, is a miko?"

 

"A miko is a very powerful shrine maiden in Japan, almost like a priestess. Miko's have magical or supernatural powers that they can use to fight demons, ghosts, and evil spirits. They often are quite gifted in the martial arts."

 

"Wait. So, I have magical powers and I'm gifted in the martial arts? How come I didn't know this? If I had magical powers, then wouldn't I know? If I was gifted in martial arts, then why am I terrible in phys ed?"

 

"Those are hard questions to answer, but I think that the reason is you haven't been trained to use your powers."

 

"Right," Kagome said sarcastically.
