*
In the stillness of the night, two figures sat by the river, resting against each other, in complete and total bliss.
Kikyo and Inu-Yasha stared into the darkness, contented smiles upon their faces. Their fingers remained laced, and the cool water washed against their feet.
"Kikyo?"
"Yes, Inu-Yasha?"
"What will happen when the jewel is purified?"
"Well," Kikyo started, "it would simply vanish, and I would become an ordinary human."
"Oh," was all Inu-Yasha could say before they sat in silence.
"Oh don't sound so depressed, it wouldn't be that bad I suppose, it would just be different."
"You mean to tell me you don't even care?" the miko looked at him with a puzzled expression.
"Why should I care, if I have to give up something for the jewel to become pure, then so be it."
"Kikyo..." Inu-Yasha whispered. 'She's willing to give up anything for a greater good; she'd even die if it meant that the world would be safe. If only...if only I could show her that I care, that I would give up...'
"That's it!" the hanyou announced jumping up.
"What's it love?" Kikyo asked confused
"Kikyo, you said that if the jewel was purified, then you would be an ordinary woman, right?"
"Well, yes but that would take some time, and I hardly see what that has to do with..."
Inu-Yasha couldn't help but interject.
"That's it then, I've decided. We'll use the jewel to make me human!"
Kikyo couldn't help but gape, "Inu-Yasha, what are you saying?"
"Well, if the jewel was used to turn me into a normal human, it would be purified, right?"
"Well," Kikyo answered, "In theory I suppose that would be logical but-"
Once again Inu-Yasha cut her off, "Right?"
She smiled lovingly at him, "Right, but what does that have to do with anything?"
Inu-Yasha got down on one knee as he'd seen humans do when they wanted to be sincere.
"Kikyo, we'll use the jewel to turn me into a full mortal, the jewel will purify, disappear, and then as mortals we can live our life together."
An even wider smile spread across the priestess's face, "Inu-Yasha, do you mean it?"
He gave her a genuine smile, "Yes Kikyo, I mean it, I'm willing to become human if it means that I can spend the rest of my life with you."
"Inu-Yasha!" Kikyo threw her arms around him in a tight embrace, "I'm so happy!"
"Uh, love?"
"Yes, Inu-Yasha?"
"I really can't breath!"
"Oops," Kikyo released her hold, "I'm sorry, I'm just so surprised and excited and I just don't know what to say! I mean the thought of being together and living our lives together, possibly raising a family when time comes, of course we'll have to think of baby names and everything and-
"Kikyo?"
"Hmm?"
Inu-Yasha smiled once more, "I *thought* you were speechless."
"Oh, I'm sorry, just the excitement making me ramble, I'm just so happy Inu-Yasha. I've never had anyone who could relate to what I go through, or someone who I loved so much."
At this she gave him another embrace (being careful not to squeeze too hard) and rested her head in the crook of his neck.
"We'll meet tomorrow then?"
Kikyo looked into her love's eyes,
"Tomorrow, at dawn, to this place, I will bring the Shikon Jewel."
"Tomorrow, heh, always a day away."
"Wow, that was deep Inu-Yasha, I didn't think you could be that smart!"
"Bitch,"
"Jerk,"
"Wench,"
"Half -breed,"
"Oh, now that was low."
Kikyo just rolled her eyes before smiling. Then, half walking, half skipping; she went back to the village, the happiest girl alive.
*
As the two walked off in separate directions, no one noticed the strange man in the baboon skin walk into the clearing.
"Naraku thanks you Kikyo, you not only gave me the power I needed, but are also going to give me just what I've been wanting all this time!"
He let out an evil chuckle before continuing to rant to himself.
"When you're sister killed Onigumo, I wasn't too happy, but then...oh then the demons came and using Onigumo's evil soul, they joined together and spawned I, Naraku, master of both man and demon alike! And soon Kikyo, very soon, Naraku shall have you, and the jewel just as he promised."
Then, the demon silently disappeared into the night.
*
Kikyo could hardly sleep that night. Tossing and turning she was too excited, her love, being with her forever! She just hoped that this wasn't some sort of horribly cruel dream. But no, it couldn't be a dream!
"Dreams don't kiss like that," she said with a smile. Kaede stirred so she made a mental note to think, not speak.
'Inu-Yasha and I, living our lives together! Three months ago I wouldn't have thought possible that I, that we, could live out our lives in peace, as one!'
"I love him, I love him for the man he wants to be," here she yawned, half asleep, "And for the man he almost is."
*
Kikyo entered the clearing the next morning at dawn, the Shikon Jewel hanging from her neck.
She heard rustling in the bushes, "Inu-Yasha?"
All of a sudden, she felt claws, horribly *sharp* claws dig into her flesh. Her blood flew into the air, as she, and the Shikon Jewel fell to the ground.
Wide-eyed and scared, she reached for the Jewel of Four Souls and groped around where she saw it fall.
Unfortunately, before she could get her hand on it, a foot stomped on her hand.
She looked up to see Inu-Yasha!
"No..."
"Feh. Fool! I never had any intention of becoming human!"
"No," Kikyo's eyes were filling with tears, "It can't be."
"Thanks for the Jewel though!"
"Inu...Inu-Yasha."
"Feh, this rock," he said, holding the jewel to his eyes, "It's thirsty for more hateful blood."
"No," Kikyo closed her eyes as tears trickled down her blood stained face, "Inu-Yasha."
"Hm, I think I'll go slaughter the village!"
As Inu-Yasha left, Kikyo silently forced herself to stop crying.
With a sniff, she painfully wiped away her crystalline tears, "The village is in danger," she told herself, "It will do no good to cry."
"I must stop him," her face grew sullen and pained, "Once, and for all."
The badly injured miko took careful steps as she headed to the village.
*
Inu-Yasha in the mean time was walking towards the designated place where they were to meet.
'I can't believe I'm about to do this, all my life I've wanted to become a strong demon, and now I'm becoming human?'
"Feh," he told himself, "I guess it's for love."
All of a sudden he heard a noise, "Kikyo?"
Three arrows whizzed out of the trees, but luckily he was able to avoid them.
"Kikyo? What the hell is this?"
The able-bodied priestess had an angry and evil face on, "Die Inu-Yasha!"
Inu-Yasha was barely able to dodge the second barrage, "So, planning to kill me all along, eh, you little witch?"
"Die!" she screamed firing as many arrows as she could at the hanyou.
'Kikyo,' he thought, 'I trusted you, hell, I *loved* you, and this is how you
repay me?'
"Kikyo" saw Inu-Yasha run towards the village, "Excellent, simply excellent." Kikyo told herself, only, it wasn"t Kikyo who stood in the foliage now, it was Naraku.
"Soon, Kikyo, your half-breed mutt will be no more, and the jewel will become mine!"
An evil laugh filled the air as Naraku silently disappeared.
*
Inu-Yasha rampaged through the village, tearing houses, ripping crops, flesh, anything he could get his claws on. He was driven by angry hurtful rage, and with the jewel in his possession; he had no fears...and no regrets.
"Ha ha ha ha ha ha!" he laughed as the villagers below him scrambled to get away in a panicked frenzy.
"This is only what you deserve!" he shouted manically, "Just as I deserve the Jewel of Four Souls!"
'With this,' he thought, bounding off towards the nearby trees, 'I can become a true demon'
"Inu-Yasha!" a girl's voice cried out accompanied with an enchanted arrow.
As the arrow pierced his heart, the hanyou noticed that he was pinned to a Go-Shinboku tree.
He looked up to see the firer of said arrow, only to see Kikyo.
And with his last breath he said, "Ki...Kikyo." before becoming enchanted and stuck to the tree for eternity.
'How dare you' Kikyo thought, 'I trusted you, *loved* you, and this is how you repay me.'
She walked painfully over and scooped up the jewel.
"The jewel, for such a thing."
In an instant Kikyo was surrounded by villagers.
"Lady Kikyo!"
"What terrible wounds!"
"Please sister," Kaede was almost in tears, "We *have* to take care of you, we have to..."
"No." she said suddenly.
"What?"
"But, but sister," Kaede stammered.
"Listen well Kaede,"
The small child nodded.
"Take this," here she motioned to the jewel, "And burn it with my remains, it must *never* fall into the wrong hands again! Understand?"
The child nodded a second, tearful, nod.
The elder sibling smiled, "I shall take this jewel with me, to the world beyond!"
*
And here we are back at the beginning; Kaede stands by her sister's grave, a patch over her eye.
"Goodbye Kikyo," she whispered, "We'll miss you."
And in a far away cave, a certain "all-powerful" demon was cursing his luck.
"Damn her!" he screamed smashing giant boulders in his wake, "Damn you Kikyo! You had to take it with you to the after life, didn't you?"
With a grunt, he caused a cave in, destroying the mountain, then, panting, he said, "No matter, I'll just have to wait, until *next* time."
Then with a last evil laugh, he disappeared.
