His eldest daughter and son-in-law, as well as their four children were gathered around him in front of the fireplace in the front room. He was fully aware that his mate would return in a moment, despite the stress she felt. He knew she didn't want either of the younger generations to become aware of her distress, but they would sense it even if she wasn't in the room with them. Once she returned to where they were gathered, he would pick up with telling the story being told. She was very fond of it, yet it always hurt her greatly to recall the tragedy that was involved. Normally, he would let her go and keep telling despite her absence, but today's specific telling was special.

His six other children would arrive at various times later in the evening and night, due to different distances being traveled. He was in need to get underway again, but his mate wasn't returning as of yet. Sensing a tension settling, he began to get up to fetch her from the other room when his daughter stopped him.

“No, Otou, I'll get her.” Kaida looked at him uncertainly, her concern reflecting in her golden orbs, one of her few physical features attained from him. He noted how tuned in she was to her pups, ears twitching at movement, even when her attention was directed at him. She looked so much like her mother in that moment, it was unbelievable.

He nodded, signaling her to go ahead, and returned to his seat. His mate would be upset with him for letting their daughter see her upset, but it was needed, in a sense. Kaida was able to sweet talk anyone into almost anything before they knew what hit them. Though it rarely worked on either of them anymore, he had a feeling his beloved would not put up a fight this time.

Kaida all but dragged her mother back into the room a few moments later where everyone else was still sitting. He couldn't help but stare at the beauty of his mate and eldest together. They differed rather greatly, but in many ways they were so very much alike.

His pup placed herself with her mate, Ryu, once again when his own mate came back over to him. She gave him a look that explained everything, even though he already knew.

Nariko, Kaida's oldest, stared at the fire that was alight behind him, her violet eyes inherited from her father glistening against its dance. Her ears swiveled at the movements of everyone around her, but her eyes remained fixated.

Akira, the second youngest, argued with his little sister Yuki over who was to claim the top bunk that night. Normally when they stayed at their grandparents' home, Yuki and Akira would take one set of bunk beds, while their older siblings would take the other.

“How about this?” Kaiyou chimed in rather loudly, making some present momentarily flatten their sensitive ears to their skulls. “Nariko and I will take top bunks, while you two take bottoms.” She looked at each of her younger siblings briefly then nodded. “Settled.”

He pulled his mate into his arms.

Now I'm just rolling home,
Into my lover's arms...

Wiping a single tear from her cheek, he notice his grand pup turn to him.

“Continue the story, Ojiisan,” Nariko said in her usual stoic, emotionless manner. She definitely got that collectedness from her great-uncle.

Kagome shot up, a cold sweat leaving every inch of her body wet. Breathing heavily and trying to collect her thoughts, she clutched her blankets tightly.

“What the...” she mumbled, finally getting a grip on reality.

Just then, Souta entered her room.

“Onesan?”

She looked up, her eyes questioning.

“What's wrong?” the young boy inquired, rubbing sleepily at his eyes and making his way to her bedside.

“What do you mean, Otouto?”

“I heard you scream a minute ago. And you're crying,” he stated nonchalantly. He studied her with those innocent, wide brown eyes, heavy with sleep. He was obviously aware something wasn't quite right.

Kagome wiped her cheeks, unaware of the salty drops that had left streaks down her cream-colored face.

“I... I just had a bad dream, that's all,” she stuttered.

He studied her a moment longer, seeming to contemplate the answer his sister had given him. He already knew what was happening, and figured it was triggered by the death of their father and his sister's inheritance of the Shikon no Tama. Kagome was remembering now. Souta vaguely remembered bits and pieces of what had happened, though he had been young at the time.

Giving his sister a curt nod, he started back toward her bedroom door. Stopping just short of the doorway, he turned back to her.

“I hope you sleep better, Onesan,” he said, smiling.

“Thank you, Otouto. Get back to bed.”

Souta turned and left, shutting the door behind him. Midnight blue eyes watching the door close, she thought over the dream she had had.

She was younger, in an oddly familiar but very unnerving place. Cowering into a corner, she watched a man enter the room. She closed her eyes tightly, suddenly very afraid of the man that now towered over her trembling form.

His black hair slightly swayed as he moved, blood red eyes watching her intently. He began to laugh as she continued to cower in the corner, trying to sink back farther away from him.

“Good,” his voice boomed, giving her the creeps. “You're afraid.”

She tried to back up more, closing her eyes even tighter. Suddenly, she felt like she was floating. She slowly cracked one eye open, afraid he would be far too near. When she opened both fully, she discovered she was in fact floating, but she was detached from her actual body. Watching the scene play out as a passer-by, she awoke with a start when it dawned on her what was about to happen to a younger version of herself.

“Oh, c'mon Kag!”

“No, Ayame. I just don't want to go out tonight.”

“You need to get out of your room! You've had yourself hauled up since your birthday. It's been well over a week now.”

Fiddling with the cord on her phone, Kagome debated on whether to go to this new club downtown with her friend.

“Please, Kag?”

“Ugh. Fine, okay, I'll go. When should I be ready?”

“I'll be there at three. We're going shopping first.”

“Aya, no!” Oh, the dreaded shopping.

“Yes. Shopping at three. See you then.”

Before Kagome could voice another protest, Ayame hung up on her. Groaning, she fell back onto her bed.

“I might as well make myself presentable,” she mumbled after a few minutes of laying motionless on her bed. Finally deciding on one of her many sarcastic catchphrase shirts that read 'Being good at stupid doesn't count.,' a pair of black jeans, and a pair of Converse high-tops, she changed, adding a few bracelets and an arm cuff to her wrists and a dog collar on her neck. After completing her outfit, she headed downstairs to find something to eat.

“Going somewhere?” Sakura Higurashi, Kagome's mother, asked her as she entered the kitchen.

Making her way to the fridge and searching for food, Kagome nodded.

“Ayame's dragging me to the mall in a little while, then we're going to this new club downtown tonight.”

“Club?”

“Yeah. No alcohol or anything, don't worry. I think it's like for sixteen and up.”

“Alright, well, you all have fun then. And be safe. I'm off to the store now.”

“Okay, Mama, I'll see you when I get home tomorrow. I'm staying with Aya tonight.”

Nodding, Sakura made to leave. As she exited the room, Kagome glanced up at the wall clock. The hands seemed to taunt her, counting down the minutes until Ayame drug her from store to store. She never did like shopping. But she did still have half an hour before her 'torture.'

After finding some left over oden from the night before and eating, she slipped outside to sit at the base of the Goshinboku.

Sitting under the giant, age-old tree, she fingered the jewel that had been hidden under the collar of her shirt. Running her tongue absentmindedly over her bottom lip and the two metal rings that pierced it, known as vampire fangs, she suddenly felt very odd. Her hands shot up to the sides of her head and she screamed in horror to feel that her ears were not where they were meant to be. Jumping up and sprinting inside, she just happened to look down at her hands to see her fingernails elongate into viciously sharp claws. Kagome slammed and locked the bathroom door behind her as she stared dumbfounded at the mirror before her.

She had... dog ears? And claws? Opening her mouth to scream for her Grandfather, she stopped before a sound left her mouth. Her canines were irregularly long and sharp. She ran her tongue over them, wincing when she cut it. The scent of the blood hit her nose and she gasped. Heightened senses, too?

Catching a whiff of a scent she could only assume to be Ayame's, as it only seemed to fit the cheery wolf-demon, coming toward the house she composed herself and unlocked the bathroom door to walk back down the stairs. Upon reaching the sliding Shoji door at the front of the house, she opened it and Ayame spoke immediately.

“Kagome, what happened, your scent ch-” the girl cut herself off, staring in shock at her friend. After a moment of composing herself, she tried to speak again.

“You're an... inu-hanyou?”

“So that's what I am. I figured it was canine of some sort.”

“But... why have you hidden it until now?”

“I didn't know until about ten minutes ago. I felt really weird, flipped out when I didn't feel my ears where they've been my whole life and took off to the bathroom.”

Ayame watched her as she spoke, not quite sure whether or not she was being truthful. Then again, if she wasn't, the ookami would've still been aware of her scent. Nodding, she stepped into the house, as she hadn't yet done so.

Just then, something her father told her the day he gave her her birthday present rang in her mind.

“Another part of you unknown to even your mother and grandfather will soon be exposed.”

“Don't think it gets you out of shopping,” Ayame said slyly after a moment, snapping her out of her thoughts.

Kagome made to protest, but Ayame grabbed her arm and pulled her from the house and out to her black Mazda RX-8.

After picking out an outfit consisting of a black and red striped skull tube top, a Rank Argyl stud miniskirt, a pair of black stiletto heels for herself and a Tripp polka dot miniskirt, a black military tube top, and another pair of black stilettos for Ayame, they left the mall and went to Ayame's to change. Much to Kagome's dislike because of her newly acquired senses, they spent almost three hours shopping before they finally agreed on the two outfits.

A few hours later, they were in Ayame's car again, on their way to the club.

“Let me guess. We're meeting Kouga here.”

Nodding, Ayame turned the corner and pulled into a parking lot. A large sign on the front of the building read TESSAIGA in blocky neon letters. Heels clicking as the two approached the front entrance, they passed the bouncers and stepped into the club.

Upon entering, emerald and chocolate eyes searched the room for Ayame's boyfriend, Kouga. Kagome's ears swiveled involuntarily at all of the noise.

“Oh, and he was bringing a friend for you, Kag.”

Kagome's eyes widened and she severely wanted to pummel Ayame.

“Hello, ladies,” a voice boomed.

Both females jumped, turning to see who was behind them. They were met with the familiar ice blue eyes of Kouga and a pair of golden orbs that were foreign to the both of them.

“Who's this?” the boy showcasing said eyes inquired. His silver hair swayed as he stepped forward, eyes never leaving the raven-haired girl in front of him. His ears, much to Kagome's surprise, were a mirror image of her own, his being silver and hers ebony the only contrast.

“That's Kagome,” Kouga said, motioning toward the girl. Sliding his arm around his girlfriend's waist, he continued the introductions. “This is Inuyasha, ladies. He's an old friend of mine that just came back to town on an internship.”

Kagome smiled. Despite something about him she had yet to place, she ultimately liked him overall. And Inuyasha smiled back. There was just something about her he couldn't put his finger on, something about her that intrigued him.

Kouga and Ayame watched them, both smiling mischievously. Maybe the two of them would get to play Cupid.

“Jii-chan!” Yuki yelled suddenly, causing many to jump. “Stop telling the story for a minute!”

She jumped up and ran toward the restroom.

Chuckling, his mate turned toward him and nuzzled her head into the crook of his neck. He leaned in and kissed his mating mark that resided where her neck met her shoulder, causing her to shiver. He had a feeling this telling would take a little longer than normal.

Okay, nearly six pages. Longest I've ever made a single chapter. And there's also the meeting of Kagome & Inuyasha! I had planned to make it later, but this puts even more of a plot twist on to later chapters. :evil grin: & Remember: reviews are your friend!
