Izayoi lay in her and Inutashio's sprawling bed, the smell of blood filled the air heavily around them. Her face was ghastly white, death imminent. Her words were so soft Inutashio had to lean over to hear her.
"Please, take care of my boys." She pleaded. "I'm so sorry I'm so weak, my love."
"Non-sense!" Inutashio smiled, a tear escaping his eye, trailing to his chin. "You're not going anywhere, you are stronger than any of us ever have been."
"If that were true, I would not be dying in such shameful way." She smiled. Her mate bowed his head, burying it into her shoulder, apologizing for doing this to her. She calmed him and made a request for Inuyasha.
He went into the room, having been sitting and pouting in a chair outside the room. His eyes had not left the floor, Sesshomaru's had not unfixed from the wall, Gypsy paced wildly up and down the corridor, and Kagura had gone to lie down.
Sesshomaru turned his attentions, and frustrations to Gypsy. "So I suppose you're moving into the mansion now?"
"If that is your fathers wish." Gypsy replied, too numb to say much else. She didn't feel like picking a fight with Sesshomaru.
"And what a lucky thing it is that his wife lies dying the day he claims you--"Sesshomaru was cut off by a growl, Gypsy was fuming.
"Are you insinuating that I have something to do with this?" She hissed, claws trembling with blue light.
"No, I am saying I think my father knows his weak human mate will not survive and therefore has chosen you, a strong hanyou. Hanyou, and a wolf, but strong nonetheless." Sesshomaru snarled. "My father has always had poor taste in women! It's no secret he's soft hearted. A poor little abused wife like you--"
"Sesshomaru!" Snapped Inutashio, who had appeared without their notice from his study. "You will not speak to my second mate this way. She will be your new step mother."
Sesshomaru showed an emotion for the first time since Gypsy had met him, and it was between revulsion and fear. 'Surely father has lost his senses.' He screamed to himself.
"What has happened to Izayoi is my doing, and she is not to blame. What happened to her is Inuyasha's doing, no one else is to blame." Inutashio spoke firmly and walked down to the kitchen to find a drink.
Inuyasha left the room, he had been crying obviously. "She's almost gone. She wants to see you Sessh."
Sesshomaru went into the room, face schooled well in emotionless expressions, and greeted his step mother with enough cheer to make Inuyasha gag. Gypsy looked at him, recognizing nothing that she saw.
"Inu--"
"No," he said. "I want to be alone. Besides, father is right, I am unworthy."
"I never said that." Gypsy stated flatly, her face like stone.
"You know it though. My mother will not survive until morning-- let me have time to mourn." His voice was raspy, so Gypsy nodded. Inuyasha's old bedroom door slammed.
The female hanyou rubbed her head, this day just kept getting better. She decided to go downstairs to see if Inutashio was drunk yet, she wanted to join him if he was.
He wasn't. He was sitting on the couch, staring at his feet, a glass of whiskey in his hand untouched. He heard her walk in. "It is my fault."
"Inutashio, that can't be true, you loved Izayoi with all your heart--"
He cut her off, "And she loved me-- that is why she's dying."
She watched him drink deeply from the glass. "What are you talking about?"
"My wife is a woman in her forties, well past the age of childbearing for humans. I knew she would not survive if I pupped her again, yet I could not stop myself." He explained, Gypsy sat down beside him, shocked at this new info.
"She was pupped?"
"With a girl this time." Inutashio looked at Gypsy with a smile. "I have lost them both."
"Inutashio, I'm sorry--"
"No-- do not be. Come, I want her to see you once more," he said, his voice like silk. She obeyed him, awed at his handling of the situation.
Izayoi was alone when Inutashio entered the room. Gypsy waited in the hall, but she could hear the conversation.
"Sesshomaru told me what happened today." She whispered.
"He would," Inutashio growled. "What did he tell you?"
"Inutashio, Inuyasha needs help until he pulls himself together. My poor baby is so lost. Will you help him?" She whispered.
"Hey, he's my baby too." Inutashio smiled down at her. "I will take care of him, my dearest."
"I love you, Inutashio. For eternity." Her voice seemed to fade away then.
Eternity had come. Izayoi died with her hand still inside Inutashio's, and a smile on her pretty face.

Inuyasha took the news of his mothers passing exactly the way everyone thought. He freaked.
He said nothing, just bolted for the door before the tears could become visible. Gypsy was almost out the door behind him before Inutashio stopped her. His eyes were duller than normal, sad and self loathing.
"Let him go-" he shook his head, small tendrils of snowy whiteness falling around his face and onto his chest. "Inuyasha will want to be alone now."
Sesshomaru bit off a rude comment and turned to his wife, kissing her softly. "Let us leave father and his new mate to grieve."
The sarcasm dripped from his fangs like poison. Inutashio shot him a withering look and then turned to the younger hanyou. "My job is to protect you from harm until your mate returns to his senses. Do not pay attention to Sesshomaru, Gypsy."
"Oi, he's not going to get to me. I am concerned about you though. Are you sure you're ok?" Gypsy touched his chest with her fingers. His eyes turned downwards to the delicate hands that rested in the valley of his breast, strange how the warm feeling from her fingers seemed to give him strength that he thought he only got from Izayoi.
With a low growl he pulled the younger female to him, allowing her to nestle into his chest, her ear pressed to his heart. A new sensation surrounded her then, one that made her scent spike and she pulled away, mortified that on the morning of his mates death, she was becoming aroused by Inutashio's touch. She darted from the room.
A smirk played on Inutashio's face, he'd smelled her. "Ahhh my pretty, Gypsy, you truly are a find. No wonder Inuyasha loves you so much." He whispered to himself.
Intashio insisted everything halt and Izayoi be buried in the family crypt that day. There was no need to drag out the service and the wake was held the next day on the grounds. Gypsy felt wildly out of place as she accompanied the older demon to dinner that night after the wake. She took the seat to his left at the dining table because Izayoi sat to his right. It made Sesshomaru have to modify his own seating arrangements, and earned a lot of mumbled complaints.
"Rin, stop playing with your food and eat," Sesshomaru warned the little girl who was making train tracks in her mashed potatoes.
"I want Grandma!" She pouted, crossing her arms.
Kagura looked to her husband for help and he only sighed, patience wearing thin. "Rin, we discussed this. Your grandmother passed away, darling. I'm sorry, but she would have wanted you to eat and stay healthy."
Rin's bottom lips trembled but she didn't argue with him, just nodded. That was until Bankotsu scoffed at her. "Oh, Rin-chan, you are such a wimp. Death is not a bad thing, it is a welcome gift for some."
"Bankotsu," Kagura warned.
He glared at her but completely ignored the warning, "People die everyday."
"Where did Grandma go after she died?" Rin asked, innocently looking for an answer from one of the adults around her. No one seemed to know what to say to her, though. Her older half brother leaned over and whispered something in her ear, making her eyes go wide. She threw her plate to the floor and scrambled from her chair.
"You are a liar, Bankotsu!" Rin screamed, tears sliding down her face now in rivers.
"I am not! It's true and you know it!" The little boy returned with an arrogant toss of his head.
"Daddy do something! Your sword will bring back, Grandma, won't it?" She whimpered the words out.
"Well technically it should--"
"Then make it, daddy! Please!" Rin pleaded pitifully, running around the table to hold onto his arm.
"Rin, Tenseiga was used once before to bring Izayoi back. Father used it to revive her after Inuyasha was born." Sesshomaru rubbed her head slowly. "It only works once."
"This is Inuyasha's fault!" She wailed, her tears soaking the front of her fathers shirt. "I hate him!"
Inutashio's eyes widened larger and he stood abruptly. Inuyasha had walked in without being noticed. The look on his face was one of shock and horror. He knew it now for fact, he had killed his mother twice now- the first time was his birth, which was why he had remained her only child. Now this, and it was for good.
"Son," Inutashio started to explain, but Inuyasha turned and was gone from the room in a flash. Gypsy was a golden blur when she darted out the door after him.
"What, Gypsy?" He turned to her with eyes narrowed.
"Inuyasha, please let's just go to the beach house and forget this mess. You can grieve in private--" She tried to explain, tears slipping from her blue eyes.
He wanted to hold her, he needed to. But instead he snarled, "I am breaking the bond. Mate my father, he will be good to you in way I don't know how, or care to know. Maybe I'll see you sometime."
"You don't mean that." She snapped.
'No, I don't. But it's for the best.' His brain screamed at him. His lips moved of their own will and he spoke calmly, "Yes, I do mean it. Tell Shiori I loved her."
With that he was gone into the night. Gypsy shook her head softly and then turned to go back inside. Inutashio sat at the head of the table, snarling in frustration as he held a scared Shiori against his shoulder. Rin had thrown herself into her mother's arms screaming bloody murder as Sesshomaru attempted to pull Jace and Bakotsu apart as they fought on the floor. Baby Jakotsu, forgotten in his highchair, wailed his discontent.
"Jace!" Gypsy's voice was not her own. "Get off Bankotsu and go to your room."
"I don't have to listen to you! You made my daddy leave!" He yelled at her, his tiny fangs bared menacingly.
"You will not speak to your mother that way!" Inutashio bellowed, a note of authority in his voice that made Sesshomaru, Bankotsu, Jakotsu, Shiori, and Kagura all stop and look at him with wide eyes. Even Rin ceased her sobbing into Sesshomaru's hair.
Jace looked at him, with a growl, "I want my daddy!"
"Believe me, pup, you don't. So you will do as I say or else!" Inutashio frowned at the pup. "Now both of you go to your room!"
With a whimper, Jace, followed by Bankotsu, scampered to their rooms.
