How far he had run, he didn't know. Where he was, he really didn't know. All he knew was that it had been days since he could pick up Kagome's scent. That sweet, arousing scent almost like a field of the finest smelling flowers. The scent he would forever hate to smell ever again.
He was tired and out of breathe. Even in his own era, he wouldn't have run on like that non stop. He would never have been tired if he stopped for atleast five minutes each day. But he didn't. He just wanted to get away from her.
How could she? She fucked another guy after pledging her love to him! He meant nothing to her. Just a fling. Nothing. He should have realized that she was no different from Kikyo. She swore she wasn't, but she was. A cruel, heartless, souless, corrupt, vile, rotten bitch! The both of them were.
As he looked around, it started to dawn on him. He was lost in modern day Japan. Nothing was familiar. He was alone. No one would care for him here. He was a hanyou again and demons are hunted by people with Miko like powers, which they used to kill demons.
He kept to a back ally, hoping no one would see him here. It was dark and raining, so it was highly doubtful. In all directions he saw nothing but empty space. His footsteps echoed against the buildings, his lower half eerily reflected in the tin trashcans. Each step he took held whispers unheard. The only sign of lights were in the very tops of the buildings, and they were only dim. Too dim to light the dark in any sence.
Like a giant clap of thunder, two bodies flew across the ally and into the trashcans like bowling balls. They groaned and cursed under their lack of breath. The smell of blood and humans caught his nose. With two loud cracks, the humans fell to the ground one after the other. As this occured, a little child screamed. It hurt Inuyasha's ears like they haven't hurt since he turned human. He started to run over, before he saw the two who shot them.
"A pretty little one isn't she?" one asked.
"Oh yeah. You remember our agreement. I get first dibs this time."
"She's so young. Fresh. Innocent. I bet she's a screamer."
The little girl whimpered. She didn't know what the two men were talking about, but she knew it was foul. It sounded nasty. One of them reached a hand towards her. She tried to run the other way, but she was roughly taken into the other man's arms and pushed against the wall. Her sobs filled the ally. The one who had tried to grab her first walked closer and reached up her dress, causing her to cry louder.
"Now now pet, no need to cry. It only hurts a moment."
Inuyasha couldn't take it anymore. This wasn't right. Even if he wasn't with Kagome, he wouldn't abandon his duty to protect those who need it.
"There won't be any pain for her. Only for you. And I promise, it's gonna hurt a lot," he said.
"Who the hell are you?"
"No need to tell you. You're going to be dead in a few minutes."
They laughed.
"I dunno if you realize it, but we're the ones with the guns. Your just a kid."
"So it seems."
"What's that mean?"
"Try to kill me and find out."
They abandoned the little girl and walked over to the silver haired hanyou. They couldn't see him very well, but they knew where he was. To them, he was no more than a mortal as themselves. They raised their guns to him, but he drew his tetsusaiga faster. It had been a long time since he had used his sword, and now it seemed to be yelling to him to be used.
"What the hell?"
"WIND SCAR!"
"HOLY SHIT!" they yelled in unison.
The attack hit them straight on, shattering them to peices.
Inuyasha looked around for the little girl. She was sitting beside the two who were shot earlier. She was sobbing and murming to herself. He walked closer to her, hoping she wouldn't run away in fear.
"Mommy..... daddy...." she sobbed.
Her parents! Those men killed her parents! Inuyasha felt a pain deep down, remembering how he lost his parents too. His father he'd never known, and his mother died when he was a kid. Not much older than her. She was atleast 5 years old, judging by her voice and scent.
That scent.... It was so.... different. It wasn't that of a normal human. It wasn't demon, or hanyou.... it was power. Power. A miko! She was a mini miko. That explains why these men were so interested in her. It wasn't just because she was a child. They could have had any child. She was special. She had this feeling about her that clearly effected humans. He felt it strong.
"Kid? It's gonna be ok."
She looked up at him, eyes watered and red surrounding chocolate brown. She looked pitiful. Her short black hair was pulled into tight pigtails and sorta curled away from her head. It was adorable. If she weren't so sad that is.
"They're dead."
"I know. You'll be ok."
"Who's gonna take care of me?"
"I dunno. But there is one thing I do know kid. You are special. Eventually, you'll have to take care of yourself and no one else. Don't ever lose faith in yourself. You're stronger than you know."
"I don't understand."
"One day you will. Come on, lets get you out of here and into a place with more people."
He picked up the girl and held her close as he ran as fast as he could to get her to safety. When the light from the streets finally surrounded them, she saw her rescuer. She smiled when she saw the dog ears on top of his head. She wanted to touch them, but knew it would be rude, so she just stared. She really liked this dog eared man. He was really cool. She just wished he could have saved her mommy and daddy.
He finally found a place worth leaving her. It took a while, because he didn't know where he was, but he found what he was looking for. An orphanage. It seemed like a nicer place. It didn't look dirty, and smelled clean. He went inside the door and set her down.
"Don't be scared kid. This is going to be your home for a while."
"I wont be ascared."
"Good."
"Will you stay mister?"
"I can't. This is goodbye. I don't think you'll ever see me again."
"Why not?"
"It's complicated."
He frowned as he left her in the place. It really didn't bug him, what he just did. As far as he could see, he did the right thing. He got her to a safe place to be raised, be fed and to sleep. There was nothing else he could do. His sadness was on Kagome. And for the next ten years, it will drive him to insanity.
