Chapter 2

The sun beamed down from the sky without mercy. It was not long after noon and already Inuyasha felt like he did a day's worth of walking. Sweat matted his long, silver hair to his forehead. He squinted his amber eyes against the light to see the path ahead. The branches and low-lying tree limbs on the path were not huge problems, but today, every little inconvenience was causing him to curse under his breath. Inuyasha didn't feel like being here. Naraku had sent him on a mission across Tokyo to kill a little schoolgirl named Kagome. `How random is that', Inuyasha thought to himself, `I used to kill high-level demons, destroy entire villages, and now I'm going out of my way to kill a high school girl?! Gods, kill me now!'

As much as Inuyasha despised Naraku, he had to do as he was told. Kikyo was his master, and as her husband, Naraku could command Inuyasha to do anything he desired. `It's a raw deal but it's the only way I can be with Kikyo', he sighed `and she is, after all, my only reason for living.'

“Ka-GO-mee… what kinda name is that?” He sneered aloud as he stared at the paper in his hand. The paper had her name and address, but there was no description. `I guess I'm gonna just have to wait for someone to come out of the house and hope it's her. This should be…” He paused as he gawked at the shrine in front of him, “…interesting.” He had not been to this part of the forest in centuries. It was his favorite clearing with the Goshimboku tree he loved in his youth, yet now a huge shrine stood in the center.

`This shrine…is her home?' He wondered. He double-checked the address on the paper. “This is it alright. Wow, things have really changed over the last couple hundred years.” Massive, stone steps led to the entrance of the shrine with beautiful sculptures and tapestries along the walls. The ancient beauty of it (thought not so ancient to Inuyasha) could make anyone stop in their tracks. He truly missed coming to this spot in his forest, or The Forest of Naraku as it was called now. Since he became a slave to Kikyo and Naraku, Inuyasha had not been able to do all the things he once loved. There was a time when he cared for nobody but himself. He belonged to no one and was feared by everyone. He was even a worthy adversary of his full-demon brother Sesshomaru. He had always been after Inuyasha's sword Tetseiga that could kill a hundred of demons with one strike. Sesshomaru's sword was the complete opposite, for it could heal and purify, even bring back the dead. When Sesshomaru died, Inuyasha had been desperate to find it but Sesshomaru had it buried somewhere and it was never found. `Well, it's not like I would have much use for it now. What could you do with a purifying sword in a land full of evil, more importantly if your master is evil? Still, its powers could help me escape and maybe get Kikyo to see the purity in herself once again. False hopes I guess' he thought to himself.

He quickly snapped out of his reverie as he heard the doorknob of the front door of the shrine begin to turn. Hastily, he ran back to the edge of the forest and hid behind a bush, just barely out of sight. He crouched down like a dog preparing to jump out and strike. His little, white dog ears perked up as he heard the door crack open. His amber eyes widened when he saw a young girl come out of the shrine with an unusually large, yellow backpack in hand. She looked just like his master.

“Kikyo? What is she doing here? If she was gonna do the job herself, why did she make me walk all the way out here?!” He grunted as he began to get up but froze instantly.

`That's not Kikyo; she's too young and look at what she's wearing. Kikyo wouldn't be caught dead in that' he realized, `although I wouldn't mind if she did…' He looked this new mystery girl up and down. She was wearing a white sailor shirt with a small, green tie and short green skirt. Her legs seemed to go on for miles and her creamy skin looked too soft to touch. Her raven locks waved down her back to her waist. She was a classic beauty with a modern flare.

“Kagome!” A voice in the distance yelled. The girl turned in the direction of the voice.

“Hey Eri, I'll be ready in a sec,” she replied. The other girl came up to Kagome and waited for her to finish tying her shoe.

`So that's KAGOME? Why does she look so much like Kikyo? She could be her twin… if she were a little older… a few hundred years older,' he laughed to himself. Kagome stood up and put on her backpack. After walking a few steps, she stumbled over a rock and the weight from her backpack made her lose her balance and fall to the side.

“Well, she'll be a challenge,” Inuyasha stated sarcastically. Kagome laughed at herself and took Yuni's hand as she helped her get up. She flipped her hair over her shoulder, wafting the scent up to Inuyasha's nose. `Mmmm, it smells like jasmine…whoa, whoa, whoa, where did that come from?' He watched Kagome's hips sway as she walked away. `Maybe I should follow her; it's always best to stalk your prey, find out when she's alone, and BAM! He he he, almost too easy.' He stood in the shadows and followed Kagome and her friend to their destination. They arrived at a large, concrete building. There, Kagome ran up to other people dressed in similar attire and began chatting away. `School…should've guessed. This'll take hours.' He sighed heavily. `I might as well take a nap while I wait. That walk took a lot outta me.' He curled up against a tree across the street from the school, just out of view of any students. He waited for her to go inside the school before closing his eyes and drifting off into a deep slumber.

The screaming and rushing of students caused him to wake with a start. His eyes snapped open and he hopped up in a defensive stance before realizing where he was. Inuyasha was still by the school, but it looked like school had been out for a while. `Great, now I'm never gonna find her.' The streets around the school were swarms of green and white. `Stupid uniforms! I guess I should just head back to her house. Maybe I'm still not too late.'

He climbed to the top of the tree. He put his hand above his eyes as he searched the sea of uniforms one last time for Kagome. When his attempt failed, he set about jumping from treetop to treetop on his way back to the shrine. The wind blew his metallic locks back, out of his face each time he jumped and would fall over his shoulders each time he landed. The sun was not as intense now and the cool, spring breeze had a relaxing effect on the hanyou. He sniffed deeply and let the smells of the season filter through him. He was not in a hurry to get back. `It's not like its going anywhere,' he figured. As he continued on his path, he could hear whispers from below. He glanced at the direction of the voices and saw Kagome and a young boy walking in the same direction along the sidewalk. `Hey, today must be my lucky day', he thought to himself as he concentrated on the conversation below.

“Kagome, I must say I love that perfume your wearing; its absolutely divine,” said the boy next to her as he walked a little closer to her.

“Thanks Hojo, but I'm not wearing any perfume,” she replied matter-of-factly. He put his hand on the small of her back.

“I wonder what else you're not wearing.” He said smugly as his hand moved lower over the back of her skirt.

“HOJO!! You hentai!” She pushed him away and slapped the back of his head. He rubbed the tender spot on his head, still smirking slightly though.

“Couldn't help but try,” he admitted. Kagome laughed and pushed his shoulder in a playful manner. Hojo put his arm around her shoulder and side-hugged her lightly before dropping his arm to make sure she knew he wasn't making a move again. Hojo had relatively short, black hair tied in a small ponytail at the nape of his neck and light violet eyes (A/N: I know Hojo looked different in the show but he's supposed to be Miroku's reincarnation. Work with me). He was a very handsome young man, and he knows it. He is a hopeless flirt; a real ladies' man but he could never keep a girl for long. Eventually they all got tired of his wandering hands, especially when those hands wandered to other girls. Hojo always flirts with Kagome but they both never take it seriously. They grew up together and were more like sister and brother than anything else. He looks out for her like a big brother would, but he cannot help his flirtatious behavior. Old habits are hard to break. Their bond is strong, but not that obvious to those who do not know them; thus, Inuyasha did not know what to think, he could only assume.

“So, they're just friends,” Inuyasha said to himself, “I don't think he'll save her over himself then.” He thought for a moment. “All the same, maybe I should wait until he's far from sight.” Inuyasha stared at the two walking together, who were oblivious of the threat above. Hojo's arm returned to Kagome's shoulder but not in any threatening way, although he did attempt to move his hand to her chest once. A stern look from Kagome, however, kept his hand at bay. That's when Inuyasha saw the odd glove on Hojo's right hand. It was like a black, fighter's glove with the palm and knuckles covered but the fingers exposed. There was a symbol on the palm of the glove, but Inuyasha could not make it out. `Must be some kinda fashion statement. Weird, but not my problem.' Hojo walked Kagome up the stairs of the shrine until she was safely at her front door.

“Thanks for walking me home again Hojo,” Kagome said as she gave him another hug.

“My pleasure Kagome, my pleasure,” he answered as he tried to pull her closer against him. She pushed him back.

“See and you wonder why I don't hug you more often!” she yelled at him. He smiled at her, seemingly unaffected by her outburst as if it were an everyday thing.

“Come on Kagome, don't you know me by now?” He smiled. She rolled her eyes at him and smiled. “Alright for real,” he told her, “give me a hug; I promise, no funny stuff.” She narrowed her eyes at him but curled her lips in a smirk. Then she gave him a tight, yet friendly hug and just as he promised, there were no groping hands. “See, I'm a man of my word.”

“You may be honest, but your still a hentai,” she laughed. They said their goodbyes and Kagome entered her house. Inuyasha waited for Hojo to turn the corner before jumping down from the tree. He used his demon senses to locate wear in the house Kagome was so he might be able to spy on her through a window. He felt a strong presence of her by a window in the back of the house. He climbed on top of the roof and peaked his head down to the second story window. He walked in just in time to see Kagome leaving the room. The room had a small, twin bed against the wall and a bureau. `Her bedroom,' Inuyasha surmised. Using his demonic senses, he could sense that Kagome was no longer nearby.

“She wouldn't know if I just take a little look around,” he figured. `I want to see what makes Naraku so intent on killing her. She seems harmless.”

As soon as Inuyasha hopped in the room, the distinct scent of Kagome washed over him. She smelled of wildflowers and jasmine. He sniffed the air deeply and let out his breath in a sigh. `She is so beautiful and she smells pretty good for a human.'

“Too bad she won't live to see tomorrow,” he sneered with a smirk as he flexed his clawed hand. Her bedroom was immaculate. Her clothes were folded neatly in her drawers and her shoes in her closet were organized in perfect rows. It looked like if a bristle on her brush was out of place, she would catch a fit. Her room was drenched in the natural light filtering through the window. He glanced out the window to find that Kagome had gone to the backyard, her backpack still in her hand. She looked around her to see if anyone was near, not bothering to look at her own window. `What is she up to' Inuyasha wondered. Kagome turned back toward her backpack and pulled out her carefully wrapped sword. Only the hilt of the sword was visible, but it was enough to stir Inuyasha's curiosity. `It can't be…that sword…there's no way.' Yet, when Kagome unwrapped the sword and held it up, it confirmed Inuyasha's suspicion. “Tenseiga!” Inuyasha screamed. He ducked from view instantly as Kagome looked around to spot the location of the voice.

“I could've sworn I heard…” Kagome began. She shook off her concern. “Impossible, its not like anyone's home.” She turned her attention to the sword in her hands, not giving the interruption another thought.

* Tenseiga? *

*Mistress, why have I been in your bag? * The sword telepathically asks.

*I thought you would be safer that way, * Kagome replied.

*My safety is not as important as yours is, Lady Kagome. You must wear me, that is the only way I can even attempt to protect you *

*I'm sorry Tenseiga; I promise I will wear you from now on. *

*Thank you mistress, but now we need to attempt to connect with your miko abilities. Sit down and lay me on your lap* Kagome did as she was told. *Now focus on your powers and attempt to glow. *

*I can't glow! * Kagome exclaimed.

*It is that very attitude that prevented you from doing so in the past. * Kagome closed her eyes and focused in her meditation position. Inuyasha let out a whisper of a laugh as he stared at the girl below.

“It's almost too easy” Inuyasha snickered. He hopped out of the window and landed on the floor as light as a feather. He paused for a second wondering if her power could truly prevent him from reaching her. It was obvious to him that Kagome must have had some sort of powers; why else would Naraku be after her? He just could not figure out what her power was and if it could possibly be a match for his. He walked around her until he was facing her directly. Her eyes were closed tightly and sweat was beading on her brow as she willed her powers to work but no light came from her aura. Inuyasha smiled in relief. He grabbed the hilt of Tetseiga and rushed toward her…
