I don’t own Inuyasha or any of its characters.
(A.N.: This is a first time for me, so I expect mixed reviews for it. Compliments are wonderful, criticism is helpful, and flames keep me warm.)
It was raining. Not a drizzle or even a normal rain, but a true downpour that soaked Kagome to the bone the moment she stepped out into it. Cursing a bit to herself, Kagome ran to her the relative safety of her car and dove in to escape the wet. She shook water off her jacket and hair as she settled in the driver’s seat, grunting in frustration about her dripping hair. This trip had been full of annoyances that were driving the young woman crazy. Nothing major had happened except for the fight she had with her fiancé about leaving in the first place. Just remembering the argument reignited her anger.
'He never thinks I can handle anything on my own. Like I’m some child who can’t look after herself!' Kagome huffed in the silence of her car.
She wondered again at the sheer stubbornness of her fiancé. Inuyasha had always been overprotective of her to the point of smothering and she was starting to question if she could handle the long term commitment of marriage with it hanging over the whole time. With a sigh of resignation Kagome turned on the car and pulled out into traffic to begin the long trek home. It had taken her two days to drive across Japan so she could receive her specialized paperwork on herbal medicine licensing.
Her nursing classes had required the forms to study unconventional medicine and she had been determined to take one trip like this alone before setting into the busy life of marriage and school. Her life had been sheltered at the family shrine she grew up in and she yearned to explore at least a little independently. Her longtime boyfriend and now husband to be had been with her since early high school and she was usually more than happy to have him at her side. Just this one adventure was all she wanted and he had berated her for weeks beforehand about her determination to go alone. It hurt, she realized, that he thought her so incapable.
The rain had yet to let up and Kagome was forced to drive more slowly than usual to be safe and she was glad she had the shelter of her car. She had at least two hours until she reached the hotel she would be staying at, maybe more with the weather so bad. With a flick of her fingers, Kagome turned the radio on to her favorite station and let the music fill the silence, an older 80's American song she hummed along to lighten her mood. The first hour passed by smoothly and Kagome was feeling more upbeat now that she was dry and making time. The road was at a part between towns and it was dark, empty and peaceful. It was maybe another twenty minutes till the next town when she spotted a car that was left on the side of the road. Steam was trailing out from under the hood and the car was half in a large puddle in the ditch. However there was no one to be found when she slowed to look closer and so she passed with a frown. It was only another five minutes until she saw the lone man, shoulders hunched to shrug off the rain, walking along the same side of the road towards town.
Miroku was miserable. He should have been home by now, the business party had ended two hours ago and he had left in plenty of time so he could be home in bed early. Two hours from his destination the engine on his car and sputtered and died, leaving him miles from the next town and further still from his home. The leather jacket he wore was little protection from the rain but he had no umbrella with him. He chuckled at his own idiocy and failure to be prepared. Miroku knew he had little choice but to walk the next three miles in the hopes of getting some help and trudged away in the rain. He was making good time at least, but he was cold and soaked and starting to shiver. He saw lights for the first time in an hour coming up behind him, but didn’t turn. Few people stopped to help strangers on the side of the road anymore so it would do little for him to get his hopes up. His surprise must have been evident when the car slowed beside him and the window rolled down because the chime of laughter came from inside. A young woman peered at him in concern before calling out.
"Was that your car back there?' She gestured behind them.
"Yeah, it decided to break down right in the middle of nowhere." He replied with bemused grin lighting his face.
She was quite lovely and the warmth of the car was billowing out the window, warming his face.
"Can I give you a ride to town?' She asked hesitantly.
He could see the uncertainty on her face. Dangerous things had happened to young women in the past in scenarios like this, so he could appreciate her hesitation. Apparently kindness had won out and she asked anyway, he could only be supremely thankful for the help and nodded.
"If you are comfortable with that, I would be most grateful."
She smiled and patted the passenger seat. "Hop in, it’s wet out there." He beamed in gratitude and shook of as much water as he could before sliding in and huddling near the heater vents.
The car pulled back onto the desolate road and the first few minutes were filled with the drizzle of rain, the slide of windshield wipers and the drone of quiet music. He took a moment to look at his roadside savior. Her face was young, maybe a few years younger than him perhaps. Her black hair lay in tendrils waving down her back. Miroku smirked at the bright pink jacket she wore and the innocent tap of her fingers on the steering wheel to the song playing. In the dark her eyes looked to be light blue but it was hard to tell. The silence was getting to him though and so he broke it.
"What had you out here so late by yourself?" He inquired; curiosity was winning him over fast over this mysterious young woman.
Kagome bristled a bit, thinking he meant the same everyone did about her being alone, but one glance at his face showed only pure curiosity. "I was taking a trip up north, but I’m on my way back home now. It was nice to have some alone time." She replied, her tone friendly.
"I apologize for interrupting your solitude then, miss. However I am indebted to you for your assistance." Miroku was intrigued to say the least. A lady should be treated with care though, so he remained polite.
"I would never leave someone in need. It’s horrible for man or beast out there tonight." She waved her hand toward the rainy street. "I have a ways to go but I am stopping in the next town. Do you live there?"
Miroku shook his head. "I live further, but the next town should help me get my car fixed so I can go home." He sighed; knowing most places would be closed for the night meant he would have to find lodging till the morning somewhere else.
"Oh, I’m sorry. How awful to be stuck like that. Is there anywhere you can stay?" The girl inquired, glancing at him from time to time.
Again he shook his head. "Probably just a hotel till morning. Most businesses are closed for now."
She sighed in an unhappy way and nodded. "I am staying at the Shikon hotel, is that a place you would be okay with?"
The lights of town could be seen in the dreary distance and he knew they would be there soon. "That would be perfect. However, I am quite famished; can I treat my savior to a meal before we get there?" He grinned at her, oddly hopeful to get to spend more time with her.
She giggled. "I think that would be sufficient repayment, good sir."
Miroku clapped lightly. "Wonderful! I know this lovely little diner right by the hotel called Musashi. The most amazing pancakes in all of Japan!"
This time she laughed fully and he found he liked the sound. "Works for me, we should be there in a few more minutes."
They rode in amicable silence for a few moments as they made their way through town. Kagome had been worried about picking up a total stranger in her car but the man had proved to be quite nice and polite. 'Not that he isn’t some serial killer in hiding.' She chided herself, but it seemed less and less likely as time went by. She directed the car into the diner after he pointed in the right direction and the both stepped out into the drizzle and dashed inside. He was even nice enough to open the door for her as they laughed a bit. Relieved to be indoors once more, the two took a seat in a round booth and ordered drinks while looking over their menus.
Kagome kept finding herself distracted from making a meal choice as her eyes darted again and again to the handsome young man beside her. He was younger than she first thought. Handsome with eyes a striking shade of violet not unlike her Inuyasha's. In fact his hair also resembled her fiancé’s, almost black with a hint of reddish brown in the light. He was good looking, she realized with a blush before averting her eyes back to her menu. She had never been attracted to anyone else but Inuyasha since she met him years ago but she felt like a schoolgirl with a crush with this man she didn’t even know.
The waitress arrived at their table and pulled out her notepad. "Are you ready to order?" She asked politely. The man looked up and flashed her a charming smile "I will have the breakfast special." He looked at Kagome and she felt a small jolt under his gaze. Breathlessly she rambled off something random she couldn’t even remember after she said it, but the waitress just took their menus and left them alone again.
Feeling oddly nervous, Kagome cleared her throat. "What had you out on the road tonight?" She ventured, trying to break the sudden quiet. He smiled at her and watched her face with some amusement in his gaze at her attempt in conversation.
"I had a business related party to attend. Hence the flashy clothes." He gestured to his dress shirt and pants. The shirt was a lovely shade of indigo and met well with the black pants. Kagome flushed a little again as she realized she was staring at his broad chest and grabbed her water to cover it. "I was on my way home when I got into car trouble." He added amicably. If he noticed her staring he politely ignored it but the glint in his gaze revealed his awareness.
"Your outfit did strike me as not well suited to the weather." She commented lightly. "I can’t believe how bad this rain has gotten." She laughed a bit and the tension eased. They conversed lightly till their food arrived. Kagome ate her meal while vividly describing her habit of getting caught in bad weather herself, gesturing widely the whole time. The man laughed and responded with his own tales of embarrassing mistakes while polishing off his food in rapid bites.
The evening passed quickly to both their surprise, enjoyment of each others company distracting them entirely. Miroku had studied the girl quite closely as they ate. She was indeed very lovely in this better lighting. Her hair was black with a hint of blue that fell in waves, the color matching the light blue in her grey eyes. Without her brightly colored jacket, she was slim but well-formed and his body couldn’t help but notice the curves her tan sweater hid and flowing skirt revealed. He struggled to maintain his composure but his mind failing to keep it. He paid for their meal and they slipped back out to the car quickly. The rain had yet to let up and puddles were fast becoming small lakes in the pavement.
He kept up the light hearted chatter with the young woman beside him as she drove towards the hotel and parked, then offering to help her carry her things inside. She fought a little but he reminded her that she had already helped him far more and reluctantly she conceded. He left her to check in while he observed the trappings of the hotel. It was nice but modestly furnished and clean. He glanced back to the girl waving him back over. He strolled up and heard her saying to the receptionist that he needed a room as well. The receptionist frowned apologetically.
"I am sorry but all our rooms are full." The woman behind the desk shook her head. "A convention in town has every hotel and motel booked up." Miroku frowned himself and tried pleading. "Is there nothing you can do? No one has canceled a reservation?" The woman shook her head and his head hung just a little lower as he pondered what to do. It shot right back up when his roadside savior once again sacrificed for him. "I guess he can stay with me then. Please bring more bedding up to my room please." She said without looking at him. He could see her faint blush and tried to protest but she shut him down fast. "There isn’t anywhere else to go and you can’t do anything about your car tile morning. You can be a gentleman can’t you?" She questioned lightly. He nodded, dumbstruck. "Then there is no issue. Let’s get upstairs." And with that she waltzed toward the elevator. He followed her bag in hand and pondered over this strange girl. "You don’t have to do this; you have helped me so much already. I’m sure I can find someplace to be for the night." He offered gently and she turned to look at him. "I grew up in a shrine, I was taught to always help anyone I could. This may be awkward but I can’t just leave you with nothing. We are both adults here, we can handle it." She said it softly but her eyes held determination. Again he could only nod as they stepped into the elevator and rode to their floor. Finding the room only took another minute or so and soon they were left to stare at one another.
Kagome felt like she was crazy for doing this, but she couldn’t leave the man to more bad luck. She gestured toward the bathroom before saying "It was quite cold and wet, why don’t you get cleaned up first? I’ll go later." He looked at her then the bathroom then back again. "If that is what you would like." His tone was hesitant, as if afraid of upsetting her. Kagome smiled and nodded before moving to unpack a bit. She heard the door close and then the shower come on and sighed softly. Wondering at her own decisions but she couldn’t disagree with them either. He was nice and he needed help. That’s all. The room she got had two beds anyhow so she could deal with it. It was only till morning.
She heard the taps shut off and sat down. After a while she started to wonder what was taking him so long. Gathering her nerve she stood up and tapped on the door. "Everything alright?" She asked.
The door lock popped and it opened a slit, steam and the smell of clean and male wafted out before his chargrinned face peeped out. "I have nothing to wear and my clothes are damp. I was unsure of what to do." He stood beside the door and leaned against the wall. She could tell he was bare except for the towel draped around his waist and flushed again. "I will call up for something, hold on." She darted to the phone and a few minutes later a yukata was dropped off. She handed it to him through the door and he stepped out a moment later. His dark hair was tousled and his feet were bare. It made her flush again and Kagome felt stupid. As if it was some racy getup instead of a simple robe. He sat on the bed across from her and seemed truly apologetic. "Are you okay?" He ventured.
Miroku watched as she flushed again and nodded. He felt wonderful being clean and warm again. With most of his needs already tended, his body was responding more strongly to this interesting mystery woman. He decided that he needed to distract himself a little and looked away. "Thank you again, this seems far too much for a stranger you’ve never met before tonight." She smiled at him and he felt a small clench in his gut. "I am glad to help." She said softly. After a moment of silence he thought TV might be a welcome interruption and stood. However she stood at the same time and they were a hairs breadth from each other. She let out a startled 'oh' as she nearly bumped into him. Her hands flew up instinctually and light touched his chest. Miroku couldn’t help but looked down into her startled face. The sudden urge to kiss her knocked him silly as his arms immediately came up to steady her. They were touching. Nothing intimate but his hands felt like tingling where they rested on her upper arms. Her grey eyes seemed dazed as they looked up at him, her mouth forming that surprised 'o'. He groaned and found he could not resist.
Kagome felt her eyes slid shut the moment his head leaned down. As if she knew just what he wanted and almost needed it herself. A jolt went down her spine the moment their lips made contact and she gasped softly. His groan in response left her reeling and her hands slid up around his neck of their own accord. His hair was soft and slid easily between her fingers and his arms were strong as they slid around her waist. Knees turned to jelly as the kiss grew deeper and soon found that he was the only thing keeping her upright as her legs gave out entirely. Kagome couldn’t even think straight, it was mind blowing. Why on earth was she kissing this man she didn’t even know? Suddenly the room shifted and she found herself straddling his lap on the bed.
Miroku expected her to rear back and slap him at any time. Instead she shifted more in his lap and her tongue shyly reached out. Gods but she tasted amazing. He pressed her more firmly against him and could feel her shuddering moan more than he heard it. His hands, which were apt to wander on good days, started aimlessly memorizing her curves. Up to her shoulders, slim but strong, down to her small waist. Fingers found the edge of the sweater she wore and slid up under, finding smooth skin that twitched under his ministrations. He swore a bit inside his head but could not stop himself as they slid up to the edge of what must be some lacy contraption and imagining it made his whole body twitch. She shifted, panting lightly, to give him access and he swept the shirt off. Taking a moment to gaze at her form. Lithe body, pert breast and white lace. He groaned and leaned in to nip at her chin, neck, ear. He blazed a path with his mouth and she let her head fall back under the assault. Miroku's hand slid down over her covered thighs only to slide back up uncovered. Her skin felt like silk under his fingers and didn’t resist the urge to tease the supple flesh he explored.
Kagome was lost in a sea of sensation. His mouth was amazing, teasing out moans she didn’t know she had and his fingers. Heavens above his touch was deft and effective. She wasn’t inexperienced but this was new for so many reasons. Once his fingers slid under her skirt she could help but push into him, asking for things she didn’t understand. He teased her, sliding oh so close before dropping away, only to return again. His touch was light and frustrating as he traveled to her inner thigh. Suddenly, he grazed the edges of her panties and she gasped loudly, bucking under the strain. Again and again he swirled around that which she craved and she grunted loudly. His mouth never let up and he freed a hand to slide down her bra straps, exposing her breasts to his gaze. His attentions to her chest mimicked those of below and the double siege was taking its toll. She gasped, moaned and groaned in a way that surely should have left her mortified but she couldn’t even stop to care. As his mouth found one perked nipple his hand grazed her straight through the now soaked lining of lace separating them below. She cursed loudly and fisted his hair. She was close and he hadn’t even done much yet.
Miroku jerked as words he hardly expected flowed from flushed lips. From one he expected more innocence from the reaction to his touch was forceful and highly arousing. Her once idle hand grabbed and pulled, baring his upper half and he as all too happy to oblige her wandering fingers. He answered her with groans of his own, amazed at how responsive she was. Her arousal soaked through and teased him. At once he nipped and grazed more firmly and she went off. Crying out and bucking against him. With a growl, he divested her of her bran and skirt, flipping her to the bed to slide off the remaining hindrances between them. Her eyes were dark and glazed, her hands were eager and she quickly divested him of the only cover he had.
Kagome absorbed the toned flesh and taut muscles that twitched everywhere she touched. His eyes were hooded as he leaned in, kissing her soundly as he lay beside her. Hands explored and tongues entwined. How could she even be doing this? She was engaged, happy. Then his fingers found her again and she was lost. All she wanted was to make love with this man, right now. Nothing else penetrated the haze. Soon he was over her, parting her, sliding. She arched her back, begging for more. He filled her, took her with both gentleness and ferocity. Time meant nothing as he pushed her, as she peaked she pulled, scraping her nails as if he could slip away at any second.
Miroku was quickly losing control, as her response to him was vivid and fierce. Of any woman he had experienced she was fast becoming the most memorable. Her climax forced his, pouring himself inside her as he thrust faster. When he could take no more he lay himself on her, gently as to not crush her. Her shudders passed as she panted by his ear and he shivered, already feeling the pull to go again. He raised himself up to look at her, to say... something but was entranced by dark grey. All he wanted was to make love to her, over and over. He whispered, afraid to break the peace of the moment. "Are you alright?"
He seemed so gentle, as he brushed her cheek with his hand. Kagome nodded, overwhelmed but amazed. "Are you?"
He smiled softly. "Yes." And then he kissed her. Again and again he brought her to her peak. Murmuring nonsense in her ear as he touched her. She begged and pleaded, wonton as she explored him. Kagome found her confidence after another respite, waking him from a light doze and took a turn astride him. Fascinated as she watched him respond to her touch. Kagome had never felt so powerful as a woman before. They lay, spent after so many hours and she watched him sleep. He was gorgeous, for sure, somehow younger in sleep. He reminded her very much of Inuyasha. At the thought she grimaced. Guilt had finally found her and it hit hard. What had she done?
With a sigh she sat up and looked at the clock. It glared 5:30 am and she realized how little sleep she had gotten. Her body tingled as she moved to shower and she rinsed the nights work down with scalding water. After she had dressed and gathered her things, she glanced again at the sleeping man. She didn’t even know his name, she realized. Maybe it was better this way. A quick scan found her a pen and some paper. She wrote him a small letter, thanking him, telling him how much he had repaid her kindness with himself. She begged to leave what happened here as it was, to not look for her or worry. She ended up with a poem about how this memory was like a seed that would grow, and she would hold it dear especially on rainy days.
With one last look at the man on the bed, she brushed aside his bangs, and then left the room. She spoke to the front desk to let him sleep and he could go when he was up and about, and asked them to give him a number to a towing company for his car. After that she climbed back into her car and headed for home. Her mind was reeling from the night and she decided just to leave it. She loved Inuyasha, and this hadn’t affected that. If she could leave it in the past she could have a bright future with her husband.
When Miroku woke, he was quite confused. The empty room left a feeling of fantasy to the whole night. Had he dreamt her up? A quick scan found the letter on the pillow beside him. He read it over and over, trying to understand why she left. No clues were left and he felt bereft of her presence. He felt guilty for pushing so far and he was certain he pushed her away, but the fondness in her words told a different story. He finally smiled, tucking the letter into his jacket as he dressed. Miroku wouldn’t soon forget the girl who saved him from a cold long walk in the wet. Who saved him again from a room less night and gave herself to him with such abandon. Just remember that part made his body respond and he felt a bit of regret. He didn’t even know her name. However, when he left and a number to tow his car was already waiting at the front desk, he smiled and moved on to face the day.
(A.N.: This is a first time for me, so I expect mixed reviews for it. Compliments are wonderful, criticism is helpful, and flames keep me warm.)
