Raptured Soul

One-shot

Rating: PG

It was nighttime and as he often did, Inuyasha was wandering through the forest. It seemed deserted except for his little group--they were asleep next to a crackling fire-and a family of tree frogs, who were croaking their hearts out. But despite this… he still got the feeling that he wasn't quite alone. He could just barely smell a familiar scent on the air, but it was too distant and light to be distinguishable.

Inuyasha shook the feeling off. For the moment, there was nothing to worry about. He might as well get some sleep; tomorrow would be a long day of shard hunting and it wouldn't do well to be exhausted. He could just see it now-Shippo would tease him mercilessly, and he'd get mad and hit Shippo, and then Kagome would `sit' him…and Inuyasha wouldn't be a very happy camper. No, it wouldn't do well at all to be exhausted.

He rested against a tree with Tetsusaiga tucked between his folded arms, ready in case he needed to quickly retrieve it. He closed his eyes, sighing. His shoulder blades ached from hacking away at all those demons earlier… and his arms didn't feel very good either. He stretched, hearing his bones popping back into their prescribed positions. Finally relaxed, he settled in preparation for sleep.

A twig snapped at the outer edge of the forest. Inuyasha jolted awake, golden eyes darting around the clearing. The scent from before was much closer now, so close that he could almost tell who it was… but not quite. He sprang to his feet, racing toward the source of the sound and the scent.

He found himself at the edge of a ring of trees. He caught movement out of the corner of his eye and swiveled around, but he still couldn't locate whatever it was.

"Show yourself!" Inuyasha growled, hand coming to rest on the Tetsusaiga's hilt.

"As you wish," came the low purr, and Inuyasha gradually saw a figure emerging from the dense trees. Amber eyes gazed back at him; Inuyasha immediately took a fighting stance.

"Sesshoumaru…" The youkai smirked, stepping forward. Inuyasha's grip on the hilt tightened; his knuckles turned white.

"My dear brother…" Sesshoumaru murmured, closing the gap between them and enfolding Inuyasha in his arms.

Inuyasha gasped, staring at his brother's face. "Sesshoumaru?" he asked questioningly; he loosened his grip on the sword, but still held it at the ready.

"I love you, little brother," the youkai whispered into the hanyou's hair. Tetsusaiga fell from Inuyasha's nerveless grasp to the ground. His eyes widened.

Inuyasha's arms slowly came to wrap themselves around Sesshoumaru's waist. Inuyasha rested his forehead against his brother's chest. "I love you too, bro-", Inuyasha choked, blood dribbling from his mouth and down his chin.

Sesshoumaru let go; Inuyasha fell to the ground. The youkai bent down, yanking his sword harshly from his brother's back. He retrieved the Tetsusaiga, picking it up with an arm he had borrowed from a human.

He turned to Inuyasha. "Sayoonara," he whispered, pressing a kiss into his brother's forehead. Inuyasha's eyes, frozen in a moment of shock and pain, were already glazed over. Sesshoumaru pushed his brother's eyelids down. "Don't look at me like that, brother. I meant what I said."

The youkai was gone in a whisper of cloth and a rush of wind, leaving behind no trace of his presence there.

They found Inuyasha's body the next morning.
