Chapter 5: Training Daze
The hours turned into days, and the days turned into weeks, but all seemed a blur to the two hanyou's and their companions. Myouga had yet to return from fetching Sakura's retainer, which didn't surprise none of them, that flee was always slacking off. But during those weeks, Sakura and Kagome worked the hardest they had ever worked in their lives. But, in reward, they were able to sleep for at least 12 hours while traveling. In short, it was close to paradise as they could ever want.
Sakura mulled over her thoughts, not being able to get to sleep for some reason or another. Her cheek was against Tobu's shoulder, and he was carrying her bridal style, sometimes growling softly to help her get to sleep. But today those growls only kept her awake, and, decidedly that she wouldn't get to sleep here in the near future, she decided to think over the past few weeks.
When training began, Inuyasha and Tobu had only taught her the basics of tracking and hunting. It had been a major bore, but she was able to help out a little more, which made her pay more attention. They also figure out a way to tap into Kagome's new power, which was simple enough seeing how they did it all the time. All they had to do was anger her, and at first no-one could anger her enough to do so. Then, during training, Miroku had said something revolving around Kikyou and… Well Kagome had contributed to the number of forest fires. Sakura had never laughed so hard in her life, so hard in fact, that they had to dunk her into the stream to get her to stop. Needless to say, everyone learned not to mention Kikyou around Kagome, at least not during training.
Slowly, her thoughts drifted to her old life, where she was known as Sarah. She couldn't even believe she was actually there. But she would never forget them, which she knew too well. After all, they were once her family.
She had lived in the same town of Los Angeles, California all her life. Well, at least until she was 12. After her twelfth birthday, her parents divorced, and Sara move with her mom and family to another part of California, wanting to get as far away as possible from her ex-husband. But being that far never stopped Sarah and her siblings from seeing their dad.
She had fallen in love with a rocker at a school, Sarah had. She couldn't help it, but he was just, awesome. Yeah, awesome, the only way to describe him. At first, she didn't even know he existed. But then, when her friend was absent, that's when she really knew he was there. I mean, she knew he existed, because she noticed that he hung out with her friend-slash-enemy, and then all of a sudden he stopped. She merely shrugged it off, saying it was probably band issues. They seemed to be in a fight over some band that they were both in.
Later on in the school year, Sarah realized she had a crush on him. It felt like being smacked in the face by a sumo wrestler. He was going out with this one girl, Kayla, when she realized it. She began to get more protective of him, saying that if Kayla ever hurt him she would pay. But it didn't hit her more than when Kayla broke up with him. She was shocked, yeah. She sat by him, telling him that she wasn't worth crying over while he sat there and crumpled up papers that Katie had made for the two. But, while on the outside she was trying to comfort him, on the inside she was cheering for joy.
Not long after, during the summer, he asked her out. She couldn't stop smiling. Of course she had said yes, and for about 2 months everything was okay.
When school started, it was even better, because they could see each other. Soon enough, they were the couple of the class. But, not every one liked it.
A new girl, named Christen, was Sarah's new friend, a good friend, actually. When Sarah couldn't attend the games, Chris went in her place. It wasn't long into the school year, about two to three weeks after Sarah's and Paul's one month anniversary, when the rumors started. Paul, apparently, thought to tell Sarah of them, and did. Sarah believed what he said; she thought that they were all lies.
Sarah had never cried harder in her life, though. She found out that Paul had indeed kissed Chris, and when she confronted him, he didn't say anything, just sat quietly while she sat there and tried to salvage their relationship… But what good was a relationship if you didn't trust them? The next day, she told him she wanted another chance with him, but not even halfway through the day, he had forced her to change her mind. She couldn't stop crying. It felt like her heart had been torn out.
Then she was here, no longer Sarah, but Sakura. The sister of Inuyasha and the future mate of Tobu. She loved them all dearly, but she still felt like an outsider, like she didn't belong here. What was more, she began to think of Tobu more than just an annoying man. She was beginning to think he was… he was who she had dreamed about.
Under her hand Tobu tensed and froze. Her ear flipped over to Inuyasha and the others only to be greeted with silence. Tensing, she shot up in Tobu's arms, her nose and ears working in over drive until a god awful sent hit her. She winced and turned, burying her nose in Tobu's neck. Said demon growled low and tightened his grip on Sakura, his eyes darting in every direction.
“Sango, Miroku. Take Kagome and Sakura to safety. Shippo, I want you to-” Inuyasha was suddenly cut of by a large roar emanating from the hills ahead of them. No-one moved, all of them trained on the sound.
“Naraku.” growled out Inuyasha, turning around and beckoning Tobu towards him. “You know of him, correct?” Tobu growled comfortingly to Sakura, who was shivering, and nodded. “Good,” Inuyasha continued. “We will need all the help we can get.” He looked at Kagome, sleeping peacefully in his arms, and took a clawed hand to shake her. He didn't really need to bother, though.
“Jewel shards! Fast!” Kagome yelled as she sat up in Inuyasha's arms. The group jumped to their feet, preparing for the upcoming rage of demons.
Sakura, who was still nestled in Tobu's arms, began thrashing and screaming, holding on to her head as Tobu tried to restrain her.
“Sakura! Calm DOWN!” he bellowed, but that wasn't heard above her screams. Her face was twisted in pain as her screams continued and the demons got closer.
All at once, it went quiet.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The annoying beep beside her head rudely woke her, dragging her from her fitful sleep. She bolted up in her bed, her cap falling from her head as she took ragged breaths to calm herself. Her brown eyes were dilated, and her black bangs clung to her forehead with cold sweat. It took her a moment to realize where she was, and when she did, she went completely still.
“I'm…back?” she whispered harshly. Not really thinking, she took her hand and brought it to her mouth, biting harshly. She felt a slight-only slight-twinge of pain shoot through her arm. Her eyes widened more, tears brimming in them.
“Sarah! We're going to miss the bus!” her big sisters voice sounded up the stairs, banging on the wall to get her attention. Sakura, or rather Sarah, jumped and fell off her bed, landing in a pile on her floor. She was here. She was back in California, and she had to go to school.
In a blur, Sarah was soon standing in front of her middle school, dazed, and rugged. Her hair was pulled into a messy pony-tail, and she wore her high tops and just a simple outfit thrown on in the rush of getting ready. Random people passed her, not giving her a glance as they walked into the building. She blinked a few times, her eyes dropping to the ground, and walked through the doors into the gym. On old habit, she made her way to her locker and opened it, pulling out her brush and letting down her hair, brushing it harshly until all it was smooth and straight before putting it back up again.
She looked at her hands, which were supposed to be sore and rough from her training with Inuyasha and Tobu, only to find them soft and smooth, the only roughness on her left hand from playing the guitar. Shaking her head, she pulled out her books and closed it, making her way up to the place her and her friends always sat.
“Mornin', Sarah.” greeted a voice. Sarah looked up at the boy, taking a moment to place him with a name.
“Da…vid.” she whispered. He looked at her with confused blue eyes, which she just shook off as she sat down, bracing her arms on her knees as she kept her head bowed, looking at the floor with empty eyes. She didn't know how long she sat there until her best friend, Lily, shook her from her daze.
“Sarah! Sarah!” she spoke loudly, shaking her shoulder. Sarah looked up at Lily with tear filled eyes, some streaking down her pale cheeks. Lily gasped and brought Sarah's head to her shoulder, encircling the frail girl in her arms.
“He's….I want... Oh god!” Sarah gasped, sobs rising through her throat, escaping her pale lips. “I can't….see….him…” she cried in between sobs. Lily comported her, rocking her back and forth. David looked over, his eyes locking with Lily's. She just shook her head as Sarah cried, sending Paul and Chris dirty looks. Paul just slumped in his seat, while Chris glared right back at her, her eyes blazing.
“I…can't… see… him… Oh, Lily. Please! Please make it stop!” Sarah cried, tearing from her friends grasp to look Lily full in the eyes.
“I can't, Sarah. I can't make it stop.” she practically whispered. Sarah's lip trembled as another sob built up in her chest.
“But… I can't see him anymore… I can't.” she whispered, more tears falling from her pink tinted eyes. Lily furrowed her brow and took hold of Sarah's chin, turning her so she could look at Paul. Sarah blinked as her eyes began to dry, her eyes locked to the guilty ones of Paul. She closed her eyes and turned around, shacking her head. “No. I can't see… I can't hear… sense…. God!” she threw herself into the waiting arms of her friend, sobbing uncontrollably. “He's… He's gone! I… I need him to…. I can't see him anymore!” she cried harder, her tears soaking her friend's jacket.
Lily didn't understand. She couldn't see Tobu. She wanted to see Tobu! She couldn't see him. He wasn't there. He was gone. He was gone with Inuyasha and Kagome and every one else. She needed to see them! She needed them!
“To…Tobu!!!” her cry was muffled by her friends shoulder. “Tobu!!”
