Chapter Four: Cookies

Jaken had searched everywhere. He was sure that there was nothing to be found. He had even gone back for Ah-Un so he could search the skies, but to no avail.
had come back to the castle fearing the worst. If he left his report to Sesshoumaru with one bone still in tact, then he was lucky. Sesshoumaru would kill him.
he hadn't.
lord was almost depressed. A melancholy , perhaps. He was maybe sad that Jaken couldn't find anything.

Right. His lord sad. Jaken could laugh.
all of the many years in service to Sesshoumaru, not once did his lord seem sad in the slightest.
no, that's wasn't true. There was one time, only one, in which Sesshoumaru seemed kind ofsad. That was when he left Rin at the fishing village. He shuddered to remember what his lord had done to him when he said so.

Sesshoumaru
couldn't believe it.
Jaken had returned, he reported to him that he couldn't find anything.
really couldn't believe it.
must have over-looked something. He was positive that Rin was there.
Lord of the Western Lands never made mistakes. He didn't do anything wrong. Ever.

Jaken made the mistake. Jaken was wrong. Jaken would pay.

Jaken
of Jaken's eyes were swollen shut and his leg seemed twisted in an odd angle. He skull was cracked and his wrist was shattered. And apparently he still had consciousness.
had been so important to Sesshoumaru that he'd get so emotional over? Like a moody sixteen-year-old girl. Best to never mention that to Sesshoumaru himself.

Rin
the blizzard had abated, Rin left the small hut with enough cookies to feed an army.
had repeatedly told the couple that she didn't need that many cookies, but the old woman insisted.
well.
liked cookies anyway.
that what it was like to have a grandmother? If so, the real question was : why aren't most kids fat off grandmothers cookies?
could have been a food grandmother, if she didn't push Rin so hard to become a miko.
and Kiniro never had it half as bad as she did. Which was a repetitive argument against the twins.
had become of them anyway? How did they do against demons on their own?
hated to think that they had died. Gi and Ki were her best friends.
only friends.

Sesshoumaru

Once Jaken had been properly punished, Sesshoumaru decided to give his own search.
should be fairly easy, he thought.
snow had covered up any scent that might obscure Rin's own. Not only that but Rin didn't smell dead.
things in the winter smelt like they had died. Most humans and even demons lost their more lively scent during the winter.
Rin didn't.
almost always smelt like flowers. She spent so much time among them, that she picked up their scent.
underlying that was Rin's personal scent. Something he couldn't place. The best scent in the world.
Sesshoumaru searched the grounds.

Rin
was hellish to walk though snow. It was cold. It was wet. It was altogether unpleasant.
Rin should have considered taking warmer clothes.
she left the village, she was in such a rush that she almost forgot to take some of the finer things. Such as food, water, extra clothes.
had brought only two things to wear. One being her armor, which she was currently wearing, the other was the miko's traditional clothing. She always had to wear her armor, because it was such a nuisance to tug around. Not that it was heavy to wear. It was actually very light, but pretty bulking to cart.
was surprised that the old woman didn't hit her over the head with a frying pan when she saw her.
sword didn't help either. Mikomi was one of the strangest looking swords that she ever saw. The merchant she bought it from said that this sword had a "special bond" with her.
that grounds, she gave the sword to her for free. On of the strangest things that had ever happened to her.

"Well, th-thanks." Rin was blabbering on like an idiot at the strange gift the merchant had handed to her.

"Of course. But that sword isn't just any piece of metal."

"I see that."

"That sword was rumored to have belonged to the great miko Midoriko. Not only is it rumored to be a very holy sword, but it's supposed to have special powers that only reveal themselves to true wielders of the sword."

While Rin wasn't sure if she believed that, it was a very nice sword, anyway.
nice didn't cut it. It was one of the finest swords she ever saw. Not to mention best looking.
on it's pommel was a beautiful blue jewel, and corded around it from the hilt was a gold dragon. The hilt itself was completely black with the dragon weaving in circles around it, and the ryu's tail making a golden base.
blade was split down the middle, and only came together where the hilt ended. Inscribed o the conjoined piece was in some foreign language, which she only remembered because the merchant said so, "Hope lies within doubt".
it's name, Mikomi.
she met someone during the first two weeks on the road, no one would talk to her and she could have sworn she heard a couple of mother's say "Don't look her in the eye, honey."
couldn't really blame them. She looked like some wild woman earlier on. Rin couldn't find any good sources of water for her to bathe in, so she probably did look like a nightmare. "I wonder how I look right now. Probably like some off-the-street peasa-"
her head to look at the sky, Rin felt a demonic aura approaching. A very powerful one. She couldn't fight him. Not freezing, half-starved and nearly unable to move. She'd probably die. But judging by the direction it was heading, it was coming straight at her.

Cliffie!!! Ha Ha! And I had you going there didn't I? You'd thought I'd actually go without one? Ha Ha. Anyway, it was this or Rin meeting him at the very end. So yeah. See you soon.
