Rin slowly walked down the carpeted steps to the first floor—her hand brushing over the railing delicately. As her feet landed on the squishy ivory carpet, she turn to her left, instinctively, this beginning her morning routine. As she made her way to the kitchen, she stopped briefly by the study, as she did ever morning, and just like the days before, Rin found Kagome drawing feverishly on her sketchpad. Smiling softly, Rin left Kagome to her own devious. It was always best not to interrupt the older girl when she was in one of her “creative” moods. Rin continued into the kitchen, where the off-white carpet abruptly ended, leaving Rin's bare feet on cold wood. Curling her toes in the slight irritation, Rin wrinkled her nose before making her way over to the island.
Taking a seat at on one of the bar stools, Rin flipped open her laptop. Spinning around on the stool, Rin stopped when the small ding alerted her that the laptop was on. Quickly logging in, she made her way to her usual fan sites. After about an hour of reading, Rin finally changed stories, going to one of her “guilty pleasures” that she liked to read. Pulling her knees to her chest, she hugged them—sitting somewhat awkwardly on the stool as she began to read, a small smile adorning her lips.
It wasn't long after Rin began reading Kagome emerged from the study. Rolling her neck to the side, she had to remind herself not to sit like that for so long. Sighing, she turned her attention away from her aching neck, and onto the younger girl. Kagome frowned when she saw what her friend was doing. Rolling her eyes, the older girl made her way to the fridge, pulling open the stainless steal door and grabbing the orange juice. Pouring herself a glass, and returning the container to the fridge, Kagome finally let her gaze fall on Rin. Taking a sip, she gave the younger girl a very knowing look.
Rin had tried to ignore Kagome. She had tried to pretend that she wasn't getting the look. Rin had even tried to continue reading the story, but to no avail. When Kagome gave you the look, there was no ignoring it. Fidgeting for a moment, Rin finally released an exasperated sigh and closed her laptop. Turning to glare at Kagome before speaking, “Nani?” She asked, smiling evilly at Kagome's response. `Serves her right' Rin thought before crossing her arms.
Kagome made a face as the word left Rin's mouth. Kami, how Kagome loathed that word. What. No matter what langue you said it in; it still was a horrible word. Not worthy to be spoken out of context. As for using it in question format it only proved to make the speaker look stupid, uneducated, and… `and sound like him' Part of her mind whispered. Kagome cringed at the thought, putting down her glass of orange juice. She knew that Rin had no idea why she hated the word so much, and thus Kagome didn't blame the girl, she was more upset at herself. Eleven years had past since her adventures began in the feudal era, and nine since they had ended. Yet still when the wounds were brought up, they reopened. It wasn't as if Kagome thought she was the only one, She knew Rin has memories just as painful. It had always surprised Kagome how much Rin could remember—from stunning details of clothes, to words someone had spoken in a conversation. Kagome had often used Rin help in recalling diolog and events for the manga.
The manga. InuYasha; A Feudal Fairy Tale. Kagome had begun drawing it as simply an escape, a way to remember and record all of her memories. When someone had approached her about actually publishing the mangas, Kagome had thought they were joking. This type of story wouldn't interest people. How could it? That was where she was wrong. In only a year the entire series had taken off in a whirlwind of interviews, proposals to make it into an Anime, book signings, Anime Conventions, Fanfiction, and loads of money. Kagome had actually had to copy right all the “characters” names. Something she had been morally apposed to, but finally gave in after Rin's many cracks about how someone could actually steal the names and the likenesses. That would just be bad.
Kagome sighed as she looked at Rin for a moment. Obviously, she had changed some of the names, Couldn't use her own, that would just seam tacky. So Rumiko Takahashi was created, the girl that fell through the well and landed in Feudal Japan. Rin's name had been uncreatively changed to Jin in the manga and anime. Of course, Kagome's family's names had changed, mainly Souta to Udo, since Kagome got away with just having Rumiko call out, Mama and Jii-chan. The cat, Buyo, had never really existed in the first place. Kagome had grown up with out pets, duo to Souta being allergenic to every animal under the sun. So Kagome added a cat for good measure.
“Your reading more Fanfiction” Kagome finally said, recovering after a long pause.
Rin rolled her eyes but nodded. “Hai” An evil thought crossed her mind, causing Rin to smile sweetly at the girl in front of her. “I just finished reading this lovely story, all about you and InuYasha. Lots of smut” Rin leaned on the counter as she spoke, drawing absentminded circles onto the counter.
Kagome had begun to take another sip of her juice, but upon hearing Rin's words, instantly began to choke. Coughing profusely as the juice went down the wrong way, all while miserably trying to hide the blush that stained her cheeks. Rin contained her evil laughter. She adored making Kagome squirm. It was one of her favorite pass times, especially if it helped get both their minds off gloomier thoughts. Rin moved her arm so that her head was resting against the palm of her hand.
Shaking her head, Kagome finally stopped coughing, “You read it about Rumiko, not me. There is a differ--”
“Like what? Height? School Uniform? Kagome, the story is about you! And besides, you drew “Rumiko” to look exactly like you. She acts like you, talks like you, IS YOU!” Rin said, waving her hands in the air for emphasis, which caused Kagome to laugh. “Rumiko is going through the same things you went through” Rin finished her rant, and returned her head to her palm.
Kagome sighed, walking over to the sink and putting the now empty glass into it. “It's not all the same, a lot of it is a lot nicer then the truth, and some of those things didn't even happen, or a lot of it I can only guess is how it occurred” Kagome said with a shrug as she turned back around to face the other girl. She smiled as she mimicked Rin's position on the other side of the island. Rin had grown so much since Kagome had first seen her. A soft reminiscent smile crossed Kagome's face as she watched Rin.
The girl across the table raised her eyebrow as she say the smile Kagome shot her. She had seen that look before. It was a look Kagome's mother often sent towards her children. Tapping her fingers against her jaw she finally asked. “What are you thinking?”
Kagome shook her head, standing back up and playing absently with her nails. “Nothing really, Just about how much you've grown up” She said, and it was true. True, Rin was possibly the shortest twenty-one year old Kagome had ever met. Standing only a smidge above 4'10, Rin was tiny compared to the modern Japanese women. In Shenjiku though, Rin was about average height for a grown women. Though in all honesty, years of famine probably hadn't helped her. Rin had defiantly been malnourished once Kagome had brought her back; it was all she could do to keep her mother from feeding Rin till the little girl exploded. For her height though, Rin was slim, like most of the Japanese culture. Her long ebony hair, once brittle and dirty now fell in a smooth sheet, curling only slightly at the end; the healthy hair was thanks to being washed more often and better nutrition. Her eye, like always, shown like a polished hazel—always showing exactly what she was feeling. Rin had always been bad a poker. Through out the years, much to the surprise of those around her, Rin did develop into a beautiful woman. Curves and all. It had taken a while for Kagome to get used to the fact that Rin had breasts. It was odd, the girl that Kagome had first met, and forever installed in all the minds of her manga readers as an adorable little girl who had warmed the heart of The Western Lord, had become a woman. That little girl grew up, went to collage, and got a job. Kagome was longer the only girl to over come time, Rin had done it as well. Kagome could feel tears prick the corner of her eyes as the memories of Rin's life flashed before her.
“Pssh. You are such a weirdo. It's not like I'm dieing you know. I'll out live you! And I was born centuries before your grandparents were even close to being born. How wrong is that? And plus. You're old too. You'll be thirty in six months, BaaBaachan” Rin teased as she waved her hand at the other girl. Rin couldn't help it though, as the same smile that had been on Kagome's lips, fell upon her own. Rin never really knew Kagome all that well, that is, until those final days. The seventeen-year-old Kagome had seemed so cool and brave to Rin's eight-year-old self. Rin still looked up to Kagome, but wasn't a little kid anymore, and their friendship had grown. The bound that crossing between times seemed to form, strengthened.
Kagome was different too, Rin thought as she looked at her best friend, and adoptive sister. Kagome was no longer the scrawny little thing that had crawled through the well at fifteen. Despite what the first manga would have you believe, Kagome had not been that busty girl in the hot spring that Rumiko was. She was fat as board back then, she and Rin would often joke about it. It had only been a year later that puberty really hit. Now Kagome was that busty thing, added with hips and Rin had always envied the way she could just walk into a store, demanding a refund, and not only get that refund, but anything else that she really wanted. Apparently, it had been the same way with Kouga and InuYasha. Rin hadn't been around for it, but when asked, Kagome could never stop laughing long enough to tell the story. Another obvious difference between Kagome and Rumiko, was the hair. Why on earth Rumiko had been colored with blue tints in her hair was beyond Rin. Normal hair color was not blue, and nor was Kagome's. Long coal-black locks fell in thick curls down to her mid back. How Kagome managed to keep her hair looking smashing and at that length was a mystery. After reading many, many, many Fanfictions about Kagome, or rather Rumiko, and having the color of her eyes change from Blue to Brown, Rin was ready to bang her head against the wall. Who in hell had blue eyes in JAPAN? Maybe a grayish blue, but honestly, Blue? Azure, Sky, midnight blue, some of those weren't even real eye colors. In truth, it was Kagome's fault. She had colored Rumiko with blue eyes because she was tired of using brown. Then of course, because the people who started drawing the Anime were NORMAL they colored Rumiko with Brown eyes. Sighing Rin bristled at the thought. True, Kagome had those oddly colored gray blue eyes, but giving herself plain blue, was just plain wrong. Then again, giving a fifteen-year-old boobs the size of Kagome's now was also slightly off. Laughing loudly at the thought Rin surprised Kagome.
“What on earth are you laughing at?” Kagome said, trying to contain her own laughter, when Rin laughed, it was really contagious.
“Just remembered how you drew yourself with boobs the size of snow melons in the first mango” Rin giggled again, as she shook her head.
Kagome blushed, but laughed nonetheless. “I gave Rumiko boobs the size of melons, not me” They both laughed but Kagome shook her head. “I hate that word, boobs, Women don't have boobs Rin, they have breasts, aren't you too old to be calling them boobs anyway?” Kagome asked.
“Same thing. Rumiko is you. I thought we established this?” Rin chuckled as Kagome reprimanded her. “It still is weird to actually talk so openly about it. The women of Feudal Japan would never talk about boob size no matter what” Rin emphasized the word boob, making Kagome roll her eyes.
“So what are you reading?” Kagome said, changing the subject. She knew Rin would never say breast. It was a dirty word in the girls book, but then again, you can take the girl out of the feudal system, but the morals stay with her.
Rin blinked, raising her eyebrow much she shook her head, “ADD much? That is a completely different subject, Miss Kagome” Rin said as she leaned forward. “Are you hiding something?” She drawled out, looking Kagome up and down once before gasping and putting her hands over her mouth. “Are you trying to hid that their fake!” Kagome nearly fell over at Rin's words. Rin nearly fell over too…from laughing.
“Gods no! It's all me hun” Kagome said as she grabbed her chest, lifting them a little then letting them drop. Rin screeched, covering her eyes and muttering something alone the lines of casual self-groping being a no no. Kagome laughed and shook her head. Rin could be so childish sometimes. “I just wanted to know what amazing fanfic you were reading” Kagome said as she shrugged.
Regaining composure, Rin looked back over at Kagome and shook her head. “Just some stuff about Jin and….Shessy” Rin grimaced at the name. “You know, I think he would have died if anyone had called him that. The masculinity of it all” Kagome couldn't help giggle at that. A frown crossed her lips though as she realized what Rin was probably reading.
Rin, catching the look, smiled sadly at Kagome, turning to look away from her. “I always love the ones where Jin is older, and she finally tells him how she feels…” Turning to Kagome, the look in her eyes made Kagome want to cry. “Do…Do you think he could have known,” Rin said, her voice just above a whisper, “Why I fallowed him?” Rin bit her lip and shook her head. “I'm sorry Kagome, I'm being stupid” Rin said, causing Kagome to shake her head.
“No, sweetie, your not. I have thoughts like that all the time… I know it's different and not fair because I was old enough for InuYasha look back at me.. But I still know how you feel.” Kagome said as she came over and hugged the girl. Kami, did she know what Rin was going through. Rin had been so young, but she had truly loved the man she had so devoted fallowed. “It's okay to cry, we all deserve to cry sometimes” To Kagome's surprise, the girl in her arms laughed.
Patting Kagome's arm, Rin smiled. “No Kagome. It's okay to cry, but not about something that will never change. I am not going to cry anymore. I've done it too much, and I'm done with it” Rin said as she embraced Kagome before standing.
A small smile crossed Kagome's face. She had said the same thing so many years ago, when she had decided all she wanted was to just be with InuYasha. Letting the girl leave her arms, Kagome took the spot Rin had just occupied. A bright smile lit up her features as she realized it was a weekend.
“Today is Saturday! That means we are going to the beach, Rin-chan!” Kagome said as she pumped her fist into the air. It was finally summer, that meant sun tanning on the beach.
Rin laughed at the older girl and shook her head. “I can't, I need to help the InuYasha booth set up for TAF. It's the opening day, but they said they wouldn't need me for much more then an hour” Rin shrugged as she head to the sink and absently began washing Kagome's used glass. After she had finished, Rin turned to face Kagome. “You are coming later today, right? It would mean so much to your fans if you would show and sign some stuff.” Rin said, knowing how much Kagome detested these conventions. Kagome sighed dramatically and put her head down onto her arms. She groaned loudly, which made Rin think of a small child. This caused the younger girl to laugh. Kagome's head snapped up, and she glared at Rin.
“Do I have to?” She said after a moment, not able to keep the distain out of her voice. Rin shook her head at Kagome, and walked over to the hall; turning back she gave Kagome one last look. Rin was rarely this serious about anything, but when it came to the Anime Conventions, it always got her full attention.
“Yes” She answered simply before turning and leaving the room. Kagome groaned loudly and smacked her hand to her head. How she hated the fans.
