“Miroku, no… wait! Naraku's insects!” The warning came too late for the young monk, having used his wind tunnel to draw in a small army of demons. Miroku closed off the winds with his prayer beads, but not before absorbing three of Naraku's poisonous insects. “Oh No!”, Kagome gasped, racing to her friend's side.
“Hiraikotsu!” The massive demon bone boomerang was sent hurtling towards the remaining demon. The demon huntress swiftly ran to retrieve her weapon after cleanly slicing off the youkai's head. Sango looked towards Kagome, urging the young miko to find the jewel shard hidden in the demon's flesh. “There, in its chest, above its heart!” Kagome said. She quickly plucked out the shard from the heart of the demon, leaving its remains to disintegrate into shimmering dust.
“Damn…. didn't …see them! Too many…”, Miroku struggled to say. Wincing in pain, he clutched his hand as the poison began to course through his veins. “Hold on, Miroku! Myouga will get as much poison out as he can!”, Kagome said calmly. Hopping onto the monk's shoulder, the flea demon Myouga surveyed the damage done. “I'll do what I can, but I'm not sure of how much service I can be. He has never absorbed this much poison into his system before.” The small demon filled himself to the brim with tainted blood and, after a few minutes, dropped off of Miroku. Sighing, he turned from the now passed out monk and faced the others. “The situation is grim, Master Inuyasha. Whether he survives or succumbs to the poison is anyone's guess at this point. I've done all I can.”
“Shit”, Inuyasha muttered softly. “We can't move him until we know how serious his condition is. We'll have to rest here for the night. Shippou, go collect wood for a fire.”
Nodding, the young kitsune sprinted into the surrounding woods. Kagome and Sango tended to Miroku, spreading a blanket from Kagome's pack over his paling body. Once satisfied that Sango had the situation under control, Kagome returned to her pack to dig out several cups of instant ramen for the group. Shippou returned shortly with the firewood and Inuyasha set up a small fire.
While boiling the water for the ramen, Kagome asked, “Do you think we should send for Kaede, Inuyasha? We're not too far from the village.”
“Keh. It'll take a day and a half for the old hag to get here. Miroku needs help now. You'll just have to do everything you can, Kagome.”

“Right.” she nodded, and handed the hanyou one of the steaming cups. No one looked particularly hungry, but she knew they had to eat something to keep up their energy for the inevitably long night ahead.
After everyone had eaten, Kagome dug a small pouch out of her seemingly bottomless bag. “I'll need to go out and find some herbs I didn't bring with me, Inuyasha. I'll be back soon.”
“Like hell, wench! It's getting dark and there's no telling what's out there. If you're lucky, it'll just be a demon. If you're not, you're likely to run into that damned wolf!” Inuyasha folded his arms and pouted. Kagome always thought he looked like a kicked puppy whenever he thought of Kouga.
“Fine. You'll just have to go with me, then! Miroku needs these herbs. I'm hoping it'll draw out more of the poison.”
“Keh.”
Kagome ignored his non-comment and led the way into the woods. Judging by the shrubs and wildlife in the area, she'd have no problems locating the herbs she needed. Not too far into their trek, Kagome literally stumbled into a thick patch of one of the specific plants. “Well, that wasn't too difficult”, she mumbled more to herself than to Inuyasha.
“How many more are ya gonna need? Knowing you, you'll trip over the next patch of weeds and land head-first into a ditch!”
“Inuyasha…”
The normally brave hanyou gulped. He knew that sickly sweet fakeness in her tone meant only pain and suffering for him.
“Osuwari!!!”
Turning to gather a few more herbs she saw nearby, Kagome glanced back over her shoulder at Inuyasha.
“Now who landed head-first?”
Grumbling, Inuyasha slowly inched himself out of the whole he had unwillingly dug himself. He was about to open his mouth with a bitter retort, when he suddenly stopped and sniffed the air. “Shit. Kagome, stay back!”
Only another second flew by before Kagome could sense it. A demon, coming their way at an extremely fast pace. A very large demon.
Slicing its way past the forest in its path, the grotesque demon whirled in a cyclone fashion, much like the one Kouga created when he ran. Only this demon was ten times larger than Kouga and seemed to be even faster. Upon seeing Inuyasha in its way, the demon changed direction and set a course straight for Kagome.
“Oh no you don't!”, bellowed Inuyasha.
Kagome didn't even have time to knock back one of her arrows. The thing was on her in a flash, and she could only brace herself. `This is it', she thought to herself. `I'm done for!'
Realizing that she had yet to feel any pain, she tentatively opened an eye. Standing before her was not the menacing demon, but Inuyasha. On the ground a few feet in front of her was a pile of shimmering dust, already dissipating into the breeze.
“Keh!”, he scoffed. “He wasn't so tough.”
Before he could say another word, another one of the creatures screeched in fury as it whirled in on Inuyasha.
“Shit! Don't tell me that thing had a mate!”
The lithe inu-hanyou scarcely dodged one attack before having to duck another. The huge demon just barely missed him with yet another lightning-quick assault. Kagome took up her bow and reached for an arrow.
“Inuyasha!” she yelled before letting her arrow fly.
The half-demon leapt out of the way, but before he made it out of the other demon's range, it lashed out with it's tail-like whip of wind and knocked Inuyasha against a boulder. A moment later, Kagome's arrow hit the mark. The demon hissed in pain before exploding into a million pieces and blown into the wind along with the other's ashes.
“Inuyasha!”
Alarmed, Kagome ran to Inuyasha. He was groaning in pain at the base of the boulder.
“Don't move. I bet you've cracked some ribs.”
“Keh.” He breathed. “It's not like I ain't been hurt before, wench.”
She shot him a look of concern and ignored his bravado. He would indeed have some severe bruising at least, and maybe some internal bleeding.
“You know I heal quickly. I don't need to be babied.” He tried sitting up, only to painfully lower himself back down.
“I said don't move, Inuyasha!” She tried to remember which way their camp was, only to notice that they'd moved a long distance from the original battle site.
“Inuyasha, can you remember which way camp was?”
The hanyou sniffed the air, frowning when he couldn't get a good scent. “I can't smell them from here, but I do smell something we can use for shelter. There's a hut not far from here with the faint scent of humans. No one's lived there in a long time.”
Nodding, Kagome set about trying to lift the hanyou onto his feet. It was no easy task for a high-school aged girl to lift a heavy half-demon. Finally when Inuyasha had managed to get up, they set off in the direction Inuyasha had scented the small hut. Soon they saw it, huddled in the woods like someone had left it specifically for them. It had everything they needed. A stream that ran not further than 10 feet from the back of the little house, a few pots and pans that hadn't been ruined by age. Kagome had Inuyasha lie on the floor to check his injuries.
“Doesn't look like you broke any bones. Just some bad bruising. Do you feel like anything's broken?”
“Nah. More like I've had the wind knocked outta me. I should be fine in a few hours.” Lying through his teeth, he tried to set her at ease. Inuyasha knew it was more than just bad bruising. He had cracked a few ribs. He hadn't told a big lie though. He would be fine. In a few days.
