Remember Me
By Miryokuteki
Chapter 17
Keiko plopped down next to the river. She'd been walking around in circles for about an hour and was getting no where.
`Yup.' She thought. `I'm going home… not that I can remember how to get there…'
She sighed trying to think about where she was in relation to her home. Unfortunately, her memory was still fuzzy.
`It's like there's one big picture puzzle all jumbled up inside my brain. If only I could figure out how to put it back together…'
“Keiko?” Her thoughts were interrupted as InuYasha flopped down beside her.
“Go away.” She mumbled burying her face in her hands. He ignored her.
“I thought you were going home.”
Keiko's voice was barely audible from behind her hands, but the hanyou managed to pick up a soft, “I was”.
“Then… what are you doing here?”
The miko looked up at him and then away at the river. Sighing, she responded, “I can't remember how to get there.”
“Good. `Cause we need to talk. Keiko…”
She cut him off. “No! I don't want to talk! Just leave me alone!” She stood and began walking away. She got about five feet before she was stopped by a clawed hand and pulled into a tight embrace.
“Keiko please…”
“No!” She struggled in his hold but he only tightened his grip. “Let me go!”
“No. Not until you listen to me.”
Keiko froze in his arms. It was odd how calm he sounded. Looking up into his eyes she was surprised to find a mixture of emotions she never thought she'd see in their golden depths. Sadness, guilt, hurt, hope, and… Was it even possible? No. It couldn't be… love?
“Please… Kagome…”
`That name… my name… He knows me… He knows my past… better then I do I'm sure. Maybe… I should listen to him. Maybe he can explain some things to me.'
“Okay.”
InuYasha sat her down then moved a few feet away. “I… I…” `Shoot! I finally get her to listen to me and I don't know what to say!' “Well… um… I guess… Sorry.”
“Huh?”
“Sorry.” He repeated.
“That's it?”
“Uh… yeah.”
“Well guess what InuYasha. Sorry ain't gonna cut it! You hurt me InuYasha! I trusted you but when I was in danger you left. You left me here with no memory of who I was or where I came from. You don't know what it's like having to start over from nothing. Not even knowing my name!” She took a deep breath. It felt good to get all that out but now that it was she felt exhausted. “I still can't remember everything. I know faces, names… I'm so confused.”
InuYasha stared at her for a moment. He was taken aback by her sudden outburst. “How much do you remember?”
“I don't know. Bits and pieces. There's still so much missing… Like us. How did we meet? What's up with the well I keep seeing in my dreams? Who am I to you? Are we friends? Enemies? … Lovers?”
The last word was barely a whisper but InuYasha caught it as well as the emotion within it. There was fear and also… hope. That small amount of hope gave InuYasha the courage to move closer to her and to wrap his arms around her, pulling her into his lap.
Keiko tensed as she felt him touch her; unsure of what he wanted. As he settled her in his lap, she relaxed. It felt… natural to be in his arms.
“No, Keiko…” he whispered in her ear. “We aren't any of those things. We're… well… I don't know…”
He drifted of in thought and Keiko looked up at him. “How about answering my other questions?”
“You're other…? Oh! Well, it's kind of a long story.”
“Then I guess I should get comfortable.”
InuYasha smiled at her. She was beautiful. “Okay…“
