Chapter one: day of destiny

The sky was a whirling mass of darkness. Barely any sunlight made it through the thick clouds of miasma. Inuyasha's forest was a battlefield, trees were uprooted, body-like trenches were scattered over the ground, and many were wounded.

Naraku had almost all of the shards, he had taken out the one from Kohaku's back, from Kouga's legs, and all the ones the now dead Kikyou had collected over her travels. Kikyou had been deceived by Naraku's tricky and now lay dead next to the Bone Eaters Well. Sango was mourning over her brother's lifeless body while Miroku, Shippo and Kilara tried to protect her from all of Naraku's demon spawns which were attacking fervently. Kouga was doubled over against a tree, his pack fighting around him. Many were being slaughtered by the demon spawn, but all of them had the same look of determination in their eyes. A deep set hate tinged with vengeance for their fallen comrades from so long ago.

Kagome was shooting her arrows from a distance. Lines of purpose creased her forehead as her purification arrows took down troops of demons. She was also trying to protect the two last remaining jewel fragments. Inuyasha was not far from her fighting fiercely with Tetsusaiga in hand, using his Wind Scar and Diamond Spear Blast whenever possible.

Sesshomaru was also in the battle along with Jaken, who used the staff of two heads to keep the onslaught of demons at bay. Sesshomaru was using his Dragon Strike attack on Naraku.

“Inuyasha behind you!” Inuyasha whirled around to the sound of Kagome's voice.

One of Naraku's tentacles was headed directly toward Inuyasha, and before he had a chance to move Sesshomaru sliced through it with Toukijin.

“Pay attention to the fight you are in.” Sesshomaru said icily.

Inuyasha nodded and together the two brothers attacked Naraku. Sesshomaru used his Dragon Strike and Inuyasha used his Backlash wave. Naraku took the attack dead on, but as soon as the waves of energy died down he regenerated his body and begun his attack anew. The fight was drawing to an end and it seemed that our beloved heroes were losing. Miroku was down, his wind tunnel having sucked in too many poisonous insects. Kilara was badly injured in her side, and Shippo had worn himself out with his foxfire attack. Kagome too was wounded and out of arrows, she had used her miko powers to cast a barrier over Sango and the others. The blue aura kept out the hideous demons.

“Kagome!” Inuyasha yelled “We need you to shoot one of your arrows while Sesshomaru and I attack Naraku with our attacks! It should be enough to defeat him this time!”

“I don't have anymore arrows though!”

“Well find something and fast!”

Kagome looked around the tattered battlefield and found an intact arrow in a nearby demon. She ran out of her barrier and yanked it out of the demons stomach, covering herself in blood in the process. She ran back to the barrier and pulled back her arrow in the bow.

Sesshomaru and Inuyasha launched into their attack again, and this time when they released their power Kagome did the same with her arrow, leaving pink strands of power in its wake. It combined with the Dragon Strike attack and Backlash wave. Naraku sensed all the power coming his way but before he could dodge out of the way, Kagome's arrow struck him in the neck, than the two dog demon brother's assault hit him.

“No! It wasn't supposed to end like this! I wasn't supposed to lose!”

Blood began to seep out of his mouth and with a final inhuman scream, Naraku turned into a black dust and blew off into the ominous wind that swept through the clearing, leaving on the almost completed Shikon Jewel in its wake.

The miasma cleared and the sun peaked its rays into the surrounding forest. Now the blood and destruction was more evident than before. The only sound that could be heard was Sango's weeping over her brother's dead body and Miroku's comforting whispers.

Kagome dropped the barrier and walked slowly to Jewel on the ground. The remaining members of Kouga's pack joined her, along with Sesshomaru, Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kilara. She slowly lifted the tainted jewel to her heart and felt its deep pulse. She concentrated all her remaining energy into the jewel and quickly purified it. She then took out the last two shards from the small vial around her neck and placed then into her palm. She looked up to the ones who surrounded her.

“This is it, I just….I just have to make a wish and the jewel will be purified forever. I don't know if I'm ready. I don't know what will happen if the jewel is gone. How long will the well stay open? Will I disappear to my own time? I can't do it!” Silent tears slid down Kagome's face, mixing with the sweat, the dirt, and the blood from battle; making her look pale.

Inuyasha moved closer to her and wrapped her arms around her slight build.

“We don't have to do it right now. We could wait a bit longer until we figure everything out. So please, just stop crying.”

His soft words made her cry more. Her knees gave way and she kneeled on the grass.

“So many have died for this damned jewels power, so many have given their lives to protect it like Kikyou! I think its time we get rid of it, if we wait too long more demons might come and it might not ever leave! I just want everything to be over.”
With that said, Kagome placed her two palms together putting the final pieces of the jewel together. She closed her eyes, tears still streaming from under her lids, and she wished.

“I wish…….I wish that Midoriko wins her battle with the demons within. That all the destruction and heartache caused by Naraku is fixed and that I may stay with the ones that I love forever.”

The jewel began to shimmer and with a flash of light the jewel disappeared and in front of Kagome was glistening figure. Kagome raised her head and opened her eyes, a feeling of warmth engulfing her.

“Midoriko.” Kagome whispered. The figure smiled at her.

“Kagome, thank you for freeing my spirit from the Shikon No Tama and letting me move on in peace. It was a very noble act not to wish for anything for yourself as many have done. Now I will grant your entire wish, starting with the destruction done by Naraku.”

Silently Midoriko walked over to Sango. Sango looked up grief-stricken but did nothing. Midoriko touched Kohaku's forehead and whispered a prayer. Slowly the transformation occurred, Kohaku's wounds healed themselves and he began to slowly breathe. Sango began to cry again, but this time in happiness. Her brother was now alive and well.

“Will he remember everything?” Sango asked between sobs.

Midoriko shook her head. “No, he will only remember that you are his sister, the rest is up to you. Provide him with whatever information you feel is necessary.”

Than Midoriko moved over to Miroku who was gazing at a scar on his hand that was once his wind tunnel. The Saimyosho poison was still in his blood stream turning his hand a sickening black color. The great priestess only had to touch him and all was better.

It was like this for almost a half hour, the long dead priestesses' spirit moving gracefully over the clearing, healing all, including the trees and earth. When she reached Kikyou's body, she blew over her palm. Like one would do when blowing a kiss, and made Kikyou's body disintegrate into nothing.

Kagome stole a glance at Inuyasha, waiting for some sign of grievance, but he only stared straight ahead, his golden gaze showing no emotion.

When all was healed she headed back toward the group. Everyone was together waiting patiently for what was about to happen next.

“Miko Kagome, all of Naraku's destruction here has been healed. Now, before I take my leave into the afterlife, you wished for one more thing,”

Kagome looked at the others, she didn't remember what else she had wished for.

“you wished that you could stay with the ones you are close to forever.”

Kagome's eyes widened in shock, she didn't remember saying that. She only hoped that her words weren't taken literally.

Midoriko took a step closer to Kagome.

“Child of time and purity, by all my power I grant your wish of staying with your loved ones forever. Be open to change, for change shall come within you and you alone. Let no one here forget my words.”

And with that said Midoriko vanished. Leaving the entire group a little dumbfounded.

“Umm did anyone else understand that?” Shippo asked curiously

Inuyasha shook his head. “Keh, I didn't get a damn thing that lady said. But I think we all better go back to the village and tell Kaede what happened.”

Kouga smiled wolfishly at the group. “We better be heading back. I'm glad I could fight along side all of you, but Ayame is waiting for me and my pack needs rest.”

Kouga led his pack North, out of the clearing. Sesshomaru went with Inuyasha and the others to collect Rin, who waited patiently with Kaede. They too left back for the Western lands.

Inuyasha told Kaede about their battle leaving no detail out. His pride got the best of him and the tale ended mostly with himself defeating Naraku single-handedly. Kagome sat quietly in the corner thinking.

`I wonder what Midoriko meant by changes… I mean it can't be bad could it? I only hope that the well didn't close, I didn't even get to say goodbye to mama, or anyone. Oh Kami please don't let the well have closed, I don't know what I will do if it is.'

Well that's the first chapter! If you have any issues with it just leave me a comment and I will try to fix it ASAP, unless its about the storyline, than I guess you can just suck it up. It is a possibility though that I will change it later!
