InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Requiem for the Unrequited ❯ Over ( Chapter 1 )
Requiem for the Unrequited
The light rain and gray day was enough to tell Kagome to be on her guard as she heaved her yellow tote out of the well. She had always been weary of dark days, considering that nothing good had ever come out of them.
From a distance, one could see the girl lift up her unusually large bag, and place it on her lightly clad shoulders, but from near another could see a totally different perspective.
She stood for a moment or two, searching the surrounding area for something that did not seem to appear. She ducked her head and walked a path that seemed all too familiar to her, that would lead to a situation that seemed all too familiar to her.
Her destination came sooner than she had hoped, for this girl was dreading what news would come next.
"Why now," She murmured to herself, fingering the chain that kept a large fragment of a glowing jewel. "We are so close..so why now?" She could almost taste the pain that would soon be coming. "Couldn't they wait until I left?"
Inuyasha's head snapped up at her, and then retreated back as she pulled back the covering to the door. He opened his mouth, but words did not seem to come out.
Her expression..it was so depressing..so lost..she knew.
Sango tried her best to smile at her friend, though found that she had trouble.
..She knew..
Miroku didn't even bother to look at her. He kept his eyes hid, trying not to glance at her, knowing that if her eyes held pain, it would affect him even more than it already has.
"Hi.." Her voice wavered and then stopped short from her greeting. If she said anything more..if she said anything more...who knows what might happen.
An uncomfortable silence filled the air.
Inuyasha abruptly stood up, causing all eyes to flicker towards him. "I'm…I'm going out." He made a beeline towards the door, and just as his hand reached to pull back the curtain, he heard Kagome's soft voice.
"Are you going to see her.." She shielded her eyes with bangs. "..again?"
He opened his mouth. He was right, she did know. "Kagome.."
"No.." Her voice was a whisper. "I'm sorry. I don't want to hear it."
"Kagome.."
"It's none of my business really, is it?" Her voice gradually rose.
"Kagome!"
"I mean, who am I to tell you who you can and can't see?" She raised her gray eyes to his golden ones. "Who you can and can't love."
Silence once again filled the room. Inuyasha looked appalled, while Kagome stood facing him, her own hands clasping and unclasping in an unbidden rage.
"Why.." She began, once again with a quiet voice. "Why didn't you tell me from the beginning?"
He had a faint sick look on his face. "Tell you what?"
"Tell me that I didn't have a chance! Tell me that all my efforts to be with you were wasted! Tell me that..you only had a heart for one..and she wasn't me."
"Kagome.."
"Aren't you going to say anything but my name, or are you too afraid to tell me the truth?"
"…"
"I get it now. Don't worry. I get it." She pushed him aside and ran into the cold air of the night, unshed tears occupying her face, along with the tiny snowflakes that the rain had transformed into.
"Kagome-chan!"
"Kagome-sama!" She heard behind her, but just kept running.
Eventually an upturned tree root in the ground caused her to loose her balance, and left her on the forest floor in a fetal position, crying desperately for the love that she wanted so badly.
It's all over now..it's all over..it's over..it's over.
She sniffed and wrapped her arms around her uncovered legs. She felt so bare..
Yes, she was physically bare, with nothing but a short skirt, and flimsy shirt to protect her from the cruel cold; yet, she couldn't help feeling so emotionally bare. Kagome didn't know what to think now..now that what she longed for was no longer in reach. Inuyasha had always been there to protect her, whether it was from a monster or demon, or from her thoughts of self-doubt, that she wasn't good enough for the group.
Maybe she should just go home. Inuyasha didn't need her. Sango didn't, she could very well take care of herself. Miroku had his kazaana to protect him physically, and Sango to protect him emotionally. Shippou could easily be taken care of by one of the group, and could be given the motherly love and attention that he deserves from Sango.
It was decided.
Kagome was leaving.
She would never come back.
Suddenly her senses jerked on, and her eyes snapped open.
There was someone behind her…Inuyasha? Would he really come? Did he want to tell her that everything was okay..that she worried over nothing?
"Kagome-sama." A hand was felt on her shoulder.
All her emotions balled up inside her fist as she struck the ground, once again beginning to cry the tears that she hoped had stopped.
The hand on her shoulder gripped it tightly and pulled her up from her laying position.
"Kagome-sama.." He stared into her eyes with such an intensity of seriousness, that she flung her arms around his neck and began to cry harder than before.
So warm..
He held her until her last tears seemed to die away. She was so vulnerable..so fragile..how dare he push away her love so indifferently.
She sniffed, and took deep breaths to keep herself from beginning to cry again. "It's okay, you know." He placed her hand gently on her back. "To cry, that is."
She gave a mumbled sound that was most likely a "Yeah.".
"Are you going to come back?" He asked quietly.
The question repeated in her brain over and over. "Am I?" She asked herself.
"Kagome-sama, please come back. We need you. Sango, Shippou…Inuyasha and I, we all need you."
She squeezed her eyes shut tightly.
"You don't need me. I always need to be saved. I cause you all trouble. I take too long staying at home, while I should be here helping you all. Face it, I am not needed."
Miroku tightened his grip on the girl he was holding. "Kagome-sama, is that what he made you believe?"
No answer.
"It's not true. Don't listen to him. You are tired, let's go back." He let her go, and stood up, stretching his muscles. Kagome was in the same position he left her in. Obviously, what he said before had no effect to make her feel better.
"Kagome-sama, if we did not need you..no..if I did not need you, would I be here right now?"
She looked up at him and slowly said, "You mean that?"
He gave her a lopsided smile, "Sure do. Now can we please go back, so that my poor feet ("and other essential parts," he added) can be warmed up?"
A hand was offered down to her, and she gratefully took it, seeing that her muscles were so used to her previous position.
For the first time that day, as she linked up her arms with him, and set off towards to cabin at where they had been staying, she gave a smile. It wasn't forced. It was a real smile.
"Miroku-sama..thank you.."
You have saved me from myself.
