Rescue Me

Chapter One

Kagome was as happy as could be expected. As she got older, she was removed from the cell where the women were kept, and given a private cabin to share with her sister. As the Captain's daughters, they were given special privileges that the kidnapped women did not receive.

Ever since she was a small child old enough to walk, she had smuggled things - particularly food - into the cells when she went to visit her mother. She had only ever been caught once, but the guard had let her through with it with a kind smile and a naughty wink, causing the small, pudgy girl to giggle.

Her life was good. She was doted on by her mother, the women in the cell with her, and all the pirate crew; except the Captain. Not that it bothered her. She knew that he was her father by blood, but when she was nearing her sixth birthday she had told her mother that she did not want him to be her father anymore. She had said that she didn't think such a cruel man could have girls; only boys who were as cruel as himself.

She loved her older sister, Asuka, and her younger brother, Souta. Souta was born of Kaede, just a year after she was. A couple of years separated her from both of them. Asuka was five years older, and Souta, just two years younger. The three of them were always together, running circles around the decks while the pirates were trying to swab them, much to their amusement. The pirates didn't mind; in fact, they would often pretend to chase them, brandishing their mops as weapons as the children would run and hide.

One particular night - her fifteenth birthday - she was sitting on a plush chair in her cabin, brushing her hair. It was soft and shiny, unlike her sister's hair, and she didn't know why. Her mother had often told her that she had inherited her hair.

In fact, Kagome looked a great deal like her mother. The only thing that she had gotten from her father was the colour of her eyes - the one thing about herself that she detested. The gentle curving and colouring of her lips, the gentle sway and bounce in her thick, shiny hair, the colour of he skin - all of it was her mother. She had her grandmother's shaped eyes, but her father's eye colour.

Kagome sighed and placed the brush down on the tabletop that shelved the mirror and stared at herself. She frowned at the door in the reflection; it was left ajar. She took a deep breath. “Oi, Asuka!” She hollered, completely shattering her delicate façade. Her body looked frail and delicate, but her naturally soft voice was often used for shouting, completely changing her composure.

“What?” Was shouted back from the hall.

“Shut the door!” Kagome hollered back, picking up the brush and continuing to untangle her hair.

“Why don't you do it, lazy ass?”

“Because I'm a `lazy ass'!” Kagome smirked at the irritated grunt that her elder sister gave off, before she poked her head in the door.

Asuka's round eyes glared at Kagome through her dark bangs. Unlike Kagome, Asuka looked like their father. “I'm not your slave, you know.”

“I know.” Kagome grinned, spinning around in her chair to run her eyes over her sister. “By why do it myself when I have others to do it for me?” She teased, pleased with her reaction. Asuka growled and snapped the door shut so violently that Kagome was surprised that it didn't break off. “Thank you!” She called out, returning to brushing her hair.

“Shut up!” Asuka shouted back. Kagome laughed.

“I love you too!” Kagome called back, giggling.

Kagome fell quiet and thoughtful as she rummaged through her wardrobe, searching for an appropriate gown to wear. Her mother was permitted on the decks only on holidays or birthdays, and Kagome wanted to look special.

She settled on a plain white dress with sandals. The dress was short, stopping halfway between her knees and her ankles, and was held up by elastic around the top of her chest - there were no sleeves. Her sandals were made of soft, white fabric that had been glued onto a wooden sole. There were white ribbons weaved amongst her hair, and she used a stick of charcoal to outline her eyes. She completed her looks by painting her lips red and dabbing her cheeks with a pale rouge, making her glow.

Asuka came back a while later. She looked Kagome up and down as she spun for inspection. She gave a low whistle. “Nice.”

“You think so?” Kagome nervously tugged the ribbons in her hair. “I know Mother doesn't approve of me showing so much skin-”

“Don't' be ridiculous.” Asuka chided, sitting Kagome down and began the fix the ribbons in her hair. “Your mother will love it.”

“I hope so…” Kagome murmured. She cast a worried glance out the window on the other side of the room. “Think it'll rain tonight?”

“Nah.” Asuka scoffed. “We're too far away; it'll never catch us.” Kagome, however, was still feeling strangely worried. She pushed it to the back of her mind as she focused on her sister's chattering.

“I wonder is `Father Dearest' is actually going to be there tonight.” Asuka mused scornfully. Kagome made a face like there was an unpleasant smell in the room. Asuka saw this and laughed. “My thoughts exactly.”

“I hate that man.” Kagome said darkly.

“Me too.” Asuka nodded, now fiddling with her own hair, teasing the wild locks into a braid. “But, you gotta remember, if it wasn't for him, we wouldn't be here today to complain to each other about how much we detest the vile man.”

Kagome contemplated this for a moment and scowled. “And my mother wouldn't be living in Hell.” Kagome pointed out dryly. “He is pure evil, through and through.”

“You have a point.” Asuka mused. “I don't see why he doesn't just go to a brothel like most of the crew.” She sighed. “Surely there are plenty of whores out there who would submit to him and give him pleasure.”

“It's not about getting pleasure for him.” Kagome murmured darkly. “It's about the power that he feels from controlling all those defenceless women. It was never about pleasure.” It was times like these when Kagome displayed the latent qualities that she had inherited from their father. Not unlike Bankotsu, Kagome also had a predatory glint in her eye; she saw what she wanted and she went for it.

Asuka pursed her lips as she watched her sister's mood turn dark. She blinked in surprise when her little sister came back to her with a cheerful smile, snapping out of her reverie. “But I'm never going to submit to any man, so what's the point in thinking about it?” She asked cheerfully.

Asuka frowned. “You're never going to marry?”

“What's the point?” Kagome shrugged. “We're the daughters of a bloodthirsty pirate; a wanted man. Who's going to marry us?”

Asuka sighed at her sister's frank words. “You judge too harshly.”

“I see things for what they are.” Kagome shook her head. “Come on, we're going to be late. Can't very well be late to my own party now, can I?” She giggled.

Asuka lingered behind for a little while, reflecting on her sister. She felt sorry for the girl; unlike Kagome and Souta's mothers, Asuka's mother was married to Bankotsu willingly. He did not force her to do anything she didn't feel like. But when she had died, Bankotsu went near mad with grief. He had acquired a ship, assembled a crew, and started pirating on the seven seas, taking his small daughter with him. He had even changed his name. Bankotsu was not the name that he was born with; it was Naraku.

Before she was even born, their father had ruined Kagome's life for her. Every time she saw a child, her mind would automatically fly toward the `torture that the child's poor mother must have endured on the night that the child was conceived'. There was no doubt in her mind that the indulgence of the body was nothing more than painful and demeaning to women. And Asuka thought that was sad.

She knew. Kagome would find someone one day who would take her for who she was; even if that was the daughter of a pirate. And he would be gentle and kind and everything a girl like Kagome deserved - the perfect man for a girl with such a traumatic upbringing to heal her poor soul. Someone who could show her that the coupling of a man and woman was wonderful, magical, something to look forward to, not cringe in the corner at the mere mention of it.

But for now, Asuka had a party to attend to.

OoOoOoOoOoO

The pirates were drinking vast amounts of alcohol as they danced around the Mess Hall. Kagome laughed and clapped along with some of the other women in the room to the rhythm of the pipes, adding to the stomping that the dancing pirates that thundered around the hall.

Kikyo sat behind Kagome, watching her daughter laugh and clap and chatter with the others aboard the ship. Her little girl had grown up so much. It was only helped along by the fact that she rarely saw her nowadays. Bankotsu now only allowed visits between them on birthdays, holidays, and the nights when there was no moon. It hurt Kikyo to think that she wouldn't be able to see her daughter on a regular basis anymore; but she would make the most of the time they could get.

“Come with me for a sec, honey.” She whispered into Kagome's ear. The girl looked up at her in confusion before excusing herself from the conversation that she was immersed in so deeply, before she stood up and followed her mother outside.

“What is it, Mother?” She asked curiously, tilting her head to the side in the manner that she did when there was something that she was desperately trying to understand. Leaning on the railing, Kikyo smiled and shook her head.

“Nothing, honey.” She murmured. “I just wanted to spend some time with you. That's all.” She said quietly.

“Oh.” Kagome murmured. “Yeah, we don't get to talk much anymore. I miss you.”

“I miss you too.” Kikyo sighed. “But there's really nothing we can do under Bankotsu's reign of terror.” Kikyo joked. Kagome did not find it funny. They lapsed into a comfortable silence, basking in the other's company.

The raging storm was coming ever closer. Kagome eyed it cautiously. The waters were getting choppier and choppier, making the ship rock. “I think it's going to hit us.” Kagome murmured.

“Maybe.” Her mother assented. In the distance, the storm had already ravaged an island and was sending the sea into a vast mass of tumultuous waves and choppy currents. If the ship hit those waters, it would likely capsize, taking everyone on board down with it. Kagome prayed that it didn't hit them. “It looks violent. Let's hope it doesn't.”

“It will.” Kagome said with some strange finality in her tone of voice. “It'll hit us soon.”

“You think?” Kikyo tilted her head to the side, studying the cloud patterns in the sky.

“Yeah.” Kagome nodded. “Those clouds are heading right over to where our course takes us.” She paused. “I'm gonna go back inside.” She murmured, suddenly feeling cold. “It's chilly out here.” She rubbed her arms in an attempt to warm them up a little to guard against the cold.

“You go on ahead. I'm gonna stay out for some air before I have to go back down below.” Kikyo smiled. Kagome's heart sank like a stone. She wanted to stay outside with her mother, but the cold was too much. “I'll come back inside in a little while.”

“Love you, Mother.” She murmured, kissing Kikyo's scarred and bruised cheek. She gave her an apologetic smile and disappeared back into the Mess Hall.

Kikyo choked back her sudden tears. She stared out toward the storm on the horizon, lost in thought. Was this what it was always going to be like? Fleeting meetings in the night, disappearing before dawn? To always have her heart crushed into tiny pieces a little more, every time she and her little girl met?

Kikyo sighed, not really listening to what was going on inside. She's learnt to live with it - didn't mean it hurt any less. Every time she saw her daughter, she was reminded of what things had been like when she was a mere infant of no use to the Captain. But when Bankotsu had suddenly seen a use for Kagome, he had taken her right out of Kikyo's arms.

Kikyo went back inside. No one on that ship realised that soon - very soon…

Disaster would strike.

And the really juicy stuff starts next chappie. I hope. (sweat drop)
