Returning to an Everlasting Love

Disclaimer: I don't own Inu-Yasha, or any of the characters therein.

It was a typical day, the birds chirping, a slight breeze blowing through the trees, and a girl- young, ebony hair, sapphire eyes- with a tear rolling down her cheek.

"Stupid Inuyasha," she said to no one in particular, "I can't believe that you'd do this to me... and right when we'd finally beaten Naraku!" she held a jewel up to the dying daylight, the Shikon no Tama, a magnificently beautiful jewel, that held many immense powers; one of these powers, Kagome had yet to discover. It would be several months before she'd find the power within herself to release it. She'd been fighting the urge to burst into tears, and settled for a few rolling down her cheek, after all, not many people could watch their true love being blown to bits, and walk away unscathed. She'd gone to the Goshibunko Tree, the only place where she knew there was still a hope of finding peace, and sat beneath it, soaking in it's healing aura. The tears fell, down her cheeks and soaking her shirt, until she could cry no more, and retired to the house.

"Kagome... dear, are you going to school today?" Mikumi (A/N: her mother. why? cuz I said so!!) asked, as she poked her head into her daughter's room, a look of worry crossed with sympathy on her face. "Sweetheart, I know it's hard, but it's been six months, don't you think that you should at least start out the new school year?"

"Yes, Mom, I'll go to school this year. Hopefully, for the whole year this time." she smiled, and got up to get dressed, 'It's been six months, but I can't stop thinking about the last time he touched me, he'd bitten me! How he managed it, I don't know, but he had, and on the shoulder. I still have the scar, I don't think that it'll ever go away, the bite was pretty deep, probably because he'd been thrown at me, and was screaming, or yelling for me to move, but I'd been frozen with fear rooting me to the spot, and he'd rammed, head first, into my shoulder, then he'd bitten down! I don't know if it had been an accident, or on purpose, but it'd hurt, and I can still feel the kiss that he'd planted on my lips right before he'd rushed off to his death. And the look that he'd had in his eyes said, "I love you, and won't ever leave you," how he could be with me now, was beyond me... after all, he'd been killed, and if there was anything left of him... I hadn't stuck around to find out, because I'd been filled with rage, loss, and the strong desire to kill Naraku, and shot the strongest arrow, filled with my hatred, anger, and loathing, straight into Naraku's skull, and he'd blown to bits, just like Inuyasha,' she sighed, 'I wonder what Miroku, Shippo, and Sango are doing right now..."

"Kagome, answer the question," a strangely familiar voice said.

"What question?" Kagome blinked, and turned to face the voice, when she looked straight onto a pair of eyes the color of a golden sunset, "Inuyasha?" she said, "Why are you here? You died..."

"I did? Wow, didn't know that I could be standing here, talking to you if I was dead," he smiled, a true-blue, 100% real smile, and Kagome knew, this wasn't Inuyasha, was it? No, baka, he died over 500 years ago. 'Oh, and like I need you to bug me at a time like this, when I'm trying to figure all of this out.' Oh, well then, faint, and you can contemplate this whole situation, while having people fawn over you. 'Good idea, for once.' she fainted, his face the last thing that she saw.

"I don't know, Mom, but I promise, as soon as I get her home, I'll be right there. ... yes, I'll make sure she's okay. ... yeah, Mom, if I don't get back before ten, I'll call you. Okay, Mom. Yeah, I'll send your hello. Uh-huh, okay, bye Mom." he hung up the phone, and looked over at the barely consious girl on the couch in the nurse's office. She blinked at him, then sat up, immediately losing her balance. He rushed over, and held her up, she noticed how it was practically effortless for him to hold her, meaning one of two things, she'd lost a lot of wieght, or he was really strong. She guessed the latter, hoping that she didn't look too helpless sitting there, a death-grip on his bicep, using him to hold her up. He was obviously not Inuyasha, because, for one, he didn't have doggie ears, (Damn it! that isn't fair!) and he was in her school, in a normal school uniform, acting like nothing unusual happened, until this strange girl, who he didn't know, fainted upon seeing him. Talk about wierd! Poor guy, she needed to thank him for staying with her until she'd woken up.

"I see you've woken up," he said (oh! he sounded exactly like Inuyasha!) she nodded, and looked him straight in the face, golden orbs stared back at her. She lost it, tears rolling down her cheeks, and onto her chest, which was quickly soaked, shaking violently with each sob. She covered her face, he may look like Inuyasha, but that doesn't make him anyone she'd like seeing her like this. He removed her hands, and soothed, "Shhhh, don't cry. What is it that you're crying about? C'mon, tell me. You can trust me. Your friends do, so believe me, I won't hurt you like whoever did this to you," he chuckled at her astonished look, "I guessed that a guy had done this to you, and judging by the look on your face, I was right," She nodded, and he contined, "Well, there's no need to cry, he's gone now, and he'll never hurt you again."

"B-b-but, the reason I'm crying is because he's gone, not because he'd hurt me," she laughed, "I guess that you could say, looking at you, I'm looking at his ghost," she smiled.

His eyes widened in realization, he'd reminded her of her boyfriend, and he'd obviously died. Great, now he felt guilty, he'd just have to add that to the growing list of guilt trips he'd be taking soon. He swallowed, "Errm, I didn't catch your name, what was it, K-something," he scrunched up his face in concentration.

"Kagome," she said. Then sighed, and leaned into his embrace, inhaling his scent, so calming, that was the last thing she remembered before drifting off into sleep.

"Thank you so much, young man. I don't think that she would've made it home on her own," Maoko (A/N: Kagome's Grandpa. why? cuz he needs a name besides 'Grandpa'! so there!*sticks tongue out*) said, as he thanked the boy for returning his granddaughter to the shrine. "How did you know that this is where we live?"

"She told me that it was the Sunset Shrine, and I already knew where it was, don't ask me how..."

"Hmmm..." Maoko was deep in thought, "I believe that you are the reincarnated soul of her boyfriend... yes... it is possible... 500 years... that's wonderful! Oh, just wait until I tell Kagome!"

"Well, then. Oh-kay," he looked puzzled, "how could I be her boyfriend, if he recently died?"

"Hmm? Oh, he died over 500 years ago. So it is possible, yes, it is very possible, and probable, since he did mark her... mm-hmm," he tapped his chin thoughtfully, "Oh! Kagome, you're up. I was just explaining to this boy about how Inuyasha died over 500 years ago... and I believe that he is the reincarnated soul of Inuyasha!"

Her eyes widened, 'It's possible, and since he looks so much like him, it's probably correct,' she thought. "Well, then. Would he remember anything from being Inuyasha, Grandpa?"

"But my name's Inuyasha. Is that the name of your late boyfriend?" he looked at her, concern etched on his face.

"Uh-huh, it was." She looked him over, 'Wow, he really does look like Inuyasha... amazing. This must be what it was like for him, when he first met me...' No, really? 'Oh, shut up.' Make me! Kagome growled at her arguements with herself. 'God, it makes me feel so simple...' She smiled at the new Inuyasha, who had a look of utter confusion on his face, and said, simply, "He and I were not just dating, actually, I don't think that we ever went on a real date, in the entire time that we knew each other, but we fell in love none the less," she sighed at the memory of his final kiss... it brought tears to her eyes, and she let them fall, rolling down her cheeks and splashing onto her open hands, that were about to cover her face, when they were grasped by a pair of stronger ones, and she fell into the offered support, crying into Inuyasha's shoulder at the memory of his former life... and how it was never gonna be like it had been then.

"Kagome," Maoko soothed, "he may be able to remember some of his life in the feudal era... with your help, of course," he smiled, and she pulled away from Inuyasha's shoulder, sniffling.

"Are you sure?" she looked hopeful, she may be able to bring back her lover.

"You could remember things from Kikyo's life, could you not?" he looked at her seriously, "That makes it possible for him to remember the mutt's memories..."

"Mutt?" Inuyasha said, a growl rising in his throat, "is that what I am?"

"Well," Kagome looked at him, imploringly, "does it matter that you were hanyou?"

"You mean, are hanyou," he growled, "I thought that no one knew about this kind of thing, but obviously, you've encountered things like me before,"

"You're not a thing, Inuyasha, you're my favorite hanyou, and I don't ever want you to change, I love you like you are," she sighed, "I don't know either of your other parts. What I fell in love with was the arrogant, egotistical, aloof, hanyou, not a human, and not a demon," she leaned back into his arms, as he tightened his grip on her, slowly letting the allusion fall, to reveal his silver hair, dog ears, claws, and fangs. He stiffened, expecting her to jump away, but she only sighed, reached her arms around his neck, pulling him ever closer to her. He relaxed, realizing that she wasn't afraid of him. He picked her up, walked over to the couch, and sat her in his lap. She sighed again, and whispered, "I love you, Inuyasha. I always will love you, even through death. Our love can live through anything, it has surpassed the test of time, and death, but we'll never lose what we'd gained over those two long years in the feudal era..." She nuzzled his neck, and slowly slipped back into a contented sleep.

"Yeah, Mom, I'll be staying at the Higurashi Shrine tonight... No, Mom, I'm sleeping in the guest bedroom... Yeah. You can tell just by listening to me? You're good. Yeah, come by in the morning to help me replace the spell... Yeah, I love you too Mom. Goodnight." Inuyasha sat the reciever back on the base, stretching as he yawned, and turned to carry Kagome back to her room. God, was she beautiful. He smiled, as he reached for her, and she mumbled something that sounded a lot like one of his mother's spells, when he suddenly felt strange, and realized that she had replaced the allusion on him, concealing his demonic features.

He knew now... that this was the woman his mother had told him stories about... the one that he was supposed to fall in love with. Maybe he could get used to her... after all, she wasn't afraid of him, even though she knew how dangerous that he could be...

'Feh. I don't see what makes her so special. She looks like an ordinary girl to me...' but how many girls could place an allusion on him? a task which was even difficult for his mother, and she was an accoplished miko... and this girl had done it in her sleep! Maybe he had underestimated her power.
