Chapter One: Night of the New Moon
The horizon glowed in colors of oranges, purples and reds as the sun slid behind the trees.
It was the night of the new moon, the night Inuyasha lost his senses and abilities. The night of the new moon revealed Inuyasha's greatest weakness; for one night out every month the hanyo half within him disappeared. As the light from the sun diminished, Inuyasha began to change into his human form. His silver hair turned black, and the ears perched on top of his head vanished. He preferred to be alone on the night of the new moon; however at this stage in his journey he had no choice but to reveal his deepest secret to Kagome.
Kagome was breathing softly as she slept within the hut they shared. They were camping within Kaede's village. The pair we're traveling back to the bone eater's well so that Kagome could return to her own time for a few days, but decided an overnight stay within Kaede's village was needed for rest. Kagome and Inuyasha had been traveling all over the western lands searching for the scared jewel shards, and so far they had only recovered a few.
Kagome kept them safe in a small glass bottle she wore around her neck like a glowing pink pendant. Yet even with the shards sealed away, surrounding daemons tried desperately to gain control of the shards. The shards contained great power, and Inuyasha hoped to one day complete the scared jewel and use it to turn himself into a full fledged daemon.
The night stars began to twinkle lightly in the sky, and the village had grown quiet. It was now late evening and Inuyasha's transformation was complete, he was human.
“Kagome…” Inuyasha whispered loud enough to wake her.
Kagome began to stir, her eye lids opened as she looked up at Inuyasha for the first time in his human form. The light from the blazing campfire within the middle of the hut reflected on his now darkened hair color.
“Inuyasha….” Kagome muttered softly. “What is it?”
“I wanted to show you, why I always hide away on the night of new moon… in this form I can do little to protect you.”
Inuyasha let out a soft growl, it was obvious that the words he uttered displeased him. He hated knowing that if something were to happen on a night like tonight, he was useless, or at least felt useless.
Inuyasha spoke again, “I just wanted you to know, to be ready on the night of the new moon to defend yourself.”
Kagome's softened lips curved into a smile.
“Thank you Inuyasha for confiding in me, but I can defend myself…I'm getting pretty good at this bow and arrow thing you know!” Kagome giggled softly, trying to lighten the mood.
Kagome then sat up facing the campfire; pulling her knees to her chest she began humming a quiet tune. Inuyasha looked somewhat relieved as his eyes fell on Kagome, she didn't appear to be upset at the fact that he turned into a human on the night of the new moon. Kagome shivered slightly, as the night was becoming brisk.
Even though Inuyasha had lost his senses, he could still tell that Kagome was chilled and promptly sat beside her, draping an arm around her shoulders. Kagome was stunned, the pair had been traveling together for some time and never had she seen such behavior. Inuyasha was calm, collected and emotional. Perhaps the human Inuyasha was gentle, unlike the hanyo Inuyasha, which was generally calling her names and poking fun at her.
“Thank you…” Kagome managed to mutter beneath her breath.
“You were cold…don't get the wrong idea.” Inuyasha huffed. Now that was the Inuyasha attitude that Kagome knew so very well. Kagome disregarded Inuyasha's comment and just enjoyed the moment as it was; her eyes drifting to the campfire as they sat in silence. For the first time Kagome felt truly connected to Inuyasha.
And then suddenly, their peaceful moment was interrupted when Kagome's body began to shutter.
“Inuyasha! I can sense a strong demonic aura heading towards the village.”
Kagome quickly jumped to her feet grabbing her bow and arrows that were perched against the hut wall behind her.
“I need to go warn the villagers!” Kagome exclaimed as she ran out of the hut.
“But…Kagome…” Inuyasha muttered, but it was too late.
“Well damn, I guess I can still try and fight, even if I am human for the time being.” Inuyasha huffed under his breath as he grabbed his tessaiga and stomped through the door.
Kagome ran as fast as her legs would carry her to Kaede's hut. She swiftly pulled back the screen and peeked within; as she guessed Kaede was already awake and also sensed the demonic aura approaching the village.
“Kaede, warn all the villagers…I'll do my best to hold off whatever it is that's approaching.” Kagome's voice wavered a little, in truth she was frightened to fight on her own. Inuyasha usually did most of the fighting, she was only there to assist him…or get in the way.
Kagome ran to the outskirts of the village, she stood quietly in the clearing just before the forest began; waiting for whatever it was to reveal itself. She drew her bow up and placed an arrow behind the drawstring, ready to fire at anyone or anything that walked out of the forest and into the clearing.
*********
Inuyasha helped Kaede warn the villagers of the impending demonic aura. The villagers lit torches and readied weapons to protect their homes and families from the fast approaching intruders.
“Kaede, where is Kagome?” Inuyasha yelled over to the elderly woman.
“She ran ahead to try and hold off the daemons.” Kaede yelled back in return.
“SHE…. WHAT!” Inuyasha growled rather fiercely, “What the hell does that stupid girl think she's doing!”
Inuyasha turned from the village and began running swiftly in the direction of Kagome's scent.
*********
Kagome gasped as she watched two figures slowly emerge from the shadows. The first was Kikyo and the second was Naraku. Kikyo was no longer wearing her priestess clothing or surrounded by her soul collectors, instead she was adorned in a silk kimono with patterns and colors very similar to that of Naraku's. Kikyo's eyes were the color of crimson, and her lips were curved into a smirk.
“Kikyo! What are you doing with Naraku!” Kagome yelled in a harsh tone. “What's wrong with you!”
“My dear reincarnation, I was tired of being undead and powerless. Naraku has given me a new life and with it new powers, and together we will destroy that half-breed Inuyasha. And after you help us complete the shikon jewel, you can join Inuyasha in hell!” Kikyo chuckled under her breath cynically.
“Are you crazy? Naraku is using you, can't you see that!” Kagome's expression was pained…although Kikyo wasn't her favorite person, she didn't like seeing her teamed up with Naraku either. Kagome stood her ground with her bow still in hand.
Inuyasha stopped in his tracks at Kagome's side; his eyes grew wide with shock as he looked at both Kikyo and Naraku standing before him. Inuyasha became instantly enraged. What was Kikyo doing with Naraku…he didn't understand.
“Kikyo, what's gotten into you? What are you doing standing next to Naraku, what did he do to you!” He screamed and then growled. Inuyasha's expression was pained; the woman he once loved and cherished was not the woman that was standing before him now.
Kikyo had no response to Inuyasha, other then to raise her bow and quickly fire an arrow in his direction. Inuyasha was slow in his human form, and was unable to dodge it completely. The arrow struck him in the shoulder, knocking him off his feet and on to his back.
“Inuyashhhaa!” Kagome screamed as she in return fired an arrow at Naraku.
Naraku dodged the arrow easily, snickering he advanced quickly in Kagome's direction.
“This was even easier then I thought it would be….” Naraku sneered. Kagome quickly fired another arrow, and Naraku again dodged it with ease. “Soon girl you will be under my control and you will find me all the shards of the Shikon Jewel. And you Inuyasha, tonight of all nights…you happen to be a weak useless human, how convenient for me.” Naraku mocked.
Inuyasha slowly stood before yelling out, “Don't you dare touch her Naraku!” Inuyasha made his best attempt to charge Naraku with the tessaiga, but he was human and the tessaiga was now not much more then a rusty katana. Naraku retaliated by unsheathing his katana aiming to cut the hanyo in half.
Kagome watched in horror as Naraku unsheathed his katana; she knew that Inuyasha didn't stand a chance against Naraku as a human let alone being wounded and human. She did the only thing she could think of to save Inuyasha's life and jumped in front of Inuyasha protecting him like a shield.
Naraku's katana cut into the flesh of Kagome's back and blood began to seep from her wound. Kagome was still standing with her arms wrapped around Inuyasha's neck. “Your…ok…Inuyasha...” she smiled faintly. Naraku stepped back to Kikyo's side to watch Inuyasha suffer, he had saw the girl jump in front of Inuyasha and didn't use enough strength behind the blow to mortally wound her.
“Kagome….Kagome…don't you do this to me…don't you close your eyes…don't you die on me!” Inuyasha whispered in her ear as he laid her on the ground beside him. It was hard for him to fight back the tears that were welling up inside of him. Inuyasha stood up slowly, growling fiercely.
“You'll pay for this Naraku! I'm going to rip you into a million little pieces!”
“Don't worry Inuyasha, we won't let her die…she's too valuable to us. “ Kikyo spoke softly as she fired yet another arrow at Inuyasha, this time the arrow struck him in the chest. Inuyasha was thrown from his feet and knocked unconscious…”
Naraku then swiftly scooped up Kagome who was now also unconscious. Kikyo smirked as she looked at the wounded Inuyasha lying helplessly on the ground. “Shall we finish him off my lord?” Kikyo asked Naraku.
“He'll be dead by morning; we need to attend to the miko's wounds.” Naraku chuckled as the three of them disappeared into the night.
