A Strange Girl and the Suffering of Two Children
Chapter 2
Tai hopped down from the tree and stood in front of him. She almost felt regret for having to kill him. Almost. After all, he was in her way, and he posed a significant threat. But still, this hatred she felt for him couldn't completely destroy their bond. She reached out and lightly stroked his cheek. Yes, she nodded to herself; she had once loved him the way he had loved her all those many years ago.
`But the link between us has been shattered; I made sure of that so I could slay him with no remorse.'
Her triangular dog-ears perked up and swiveled around, catching a faint sound coming in her direction. She jumped into the tree; sure that if it were a demon, it wouldn't smell her. Her scent was so similar to his that the two often blended together so that even she couldn't tell them apart.
A young girl stepped into the clearing, looking lost and confused. She had longish raven hair and wore a bizarre outfit with the shortest kimono Tai had ever seen. The intruder had caught sight of InuYasha. He had been there so long that vines had snaked their way up his arms and legs, binding him even tighter to the God's Tree. The girl slowly walked up to him, a puzzled expression adorning her face.
`Damn!' Tai said to herself. `If this bitch plans on killing him, I'm going to have to reveal myself. Then all the villagers will come and I can't fight all of them at once! I'll end up like that baka down there, or worse.' The half demon in the tree tensed her muscles, ready to pounce. The girl was right in front of InuYasha now, and was slowly extending her arm. It took all of her balance and skill for Tai to stay in the tree for silent guffaws when the mortal grabbed InuYasha's ears and started to pet them none-to-gently.
The human was muttering to herself, “Whew. Now that that's out of my system, how do I get home?” Suddenly, a group of men from the nearby village spotted the foreigner, and after some shouting on both sides, the girl was hauled off to the village with her hands tied. Tai was watching all of this with the air of someone with nothing better to do.
“What did I tell you InuYasha? That girl's situation is no exception to the barbaric laws of human nature; she's different from them, so they hate her automatically. It's a shame they'll kill her though. I was hoping she would be the one to finally remove the spell.” She paused for some time, lost in thought. “Do you remember the last time we spoke? We were soaked with gore, our own blood taken from us by those miserable humans. Yet you still desired to become one; and that, my dear little InuYasha is why I never went back. But don't fret! I will allow you to see me again; I might even speak with you someday, before I kill you, well after you are free.”
*Flashback*
Yelps of pain echoed throughout the streets as the mob of humans launched their first blows at the pair of frightened pups. The leader struck the girl across her shoulder; she fell to her knees from the force of the blow, her arm hanging limply at her side, dislocated. The boy behind her had released her wrist, and was now huddled on the ground, covering his head with his clawed hands. He looked up to see her eyes ringed in red, faint purple stripes coming into precedence across her face as she clutched her wounded shoulder. He forgot his pain and the several people still in the process of flogging him as he leapt to his feet. The throng of humans backed away from him in fear, he was a mutt, but even half-demons could bite.
“Tai no! You can't kill them, I WON'T LET YOU!”
She had been raising her unwounded arm, preparing to slaughter her attackers, dice them into oh-so-many bloody little bits, but she paused as he shouted the last phrase. She spoke to him in an exasperated condescending tone, as if she were an adult explaining something very simple to a petulant child. “InuYasha…you baka…they all deserve to die.” She felt herself lose consciousness as she watched him dash in front of her, his arms outstretched, shielding the mob leader from her strike.

He had to stay awake a little while more. He could hear his mother's rapid footfalls drawing closer, but they were still some distance away; someone had probably told her that he and Tai were dead. He had to stay awake to protect Tai in case they came back.
“As if I could do anything to defend her in this state…”he whispered to himself as he lay on his back. His small body was riddled with pain, less from the wounds inflicted by the mob than the ones she had given him. “Ow, it burns. Her claws are nearly as poisonous as Sesshomaru's.” In addition to the four deep gashes across his front, he had also suffered several wounds from a blade of some sort, had multiple broken ribs, and his right ear was lying flat against his head, the blood oozing from it turning his pretty silver hair a dark, sickly red. Nevertheless, his left ear twitched at the reprimand from his companion.
“My claws are...augh!...ten times better than...ow!...his.” She gasped as she struggled to rise.
“You shouldn't be moving yet. Lie down, Mommy's coming.” He sternly commanded her. She responded by standing and slowly making her way towards where he lay.
“You can't move at all, can you? Ha! Now I can finally say this: I despise you.” The boy's eyes widened and he started to speak, but she cut him off. “As a half-breed you should never sympathize with anyone, because no one cares enough to even give a rat's ass over you. I'll be damned if I'm going to help the humans, much less become one.” She let that sink into his thick skull before continuing. “We both know that you're stronger than me. That's the only reason I haven't left already, but now that you're helpless... I'll come back some day to rid Japan of you and this whole fucking town as soon as I'm strong enough. That's a promise.” Tai wrapped up her version of a goodbye as the sound of the human woman's frantic running elevated in volume. “It would be best if you just let her think I died.” InuYasha summoned the strength to nod, shaking loose a tear. He passed out as he watched his only childhood friend turned her back on him and limp away into the forest.
