Prologue: Ending of an Era
by Miss Nikki
His hold on her was possessive, as if he were afraid she’d disappear if he let go. “No,” he whispered as if someone were there to take her away. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, trying hard to ignore the smell of death that rolled off her in waves. He felt the faint signs of life were slipping away. Watched the faint glow of the soul leaving the body.
“I. I.. I’m sorry. It’s my fault. If only I had realized it sooner.” He pressed his lips against the cold flesh of her body. “Please. Just please forgive me.”
Her body was just a vessel for a partial soul that was stolen. She knew it wouldn’t last long. Being this close to the majority of the stolen tidbit made it harder for her to hold on. Without that, event he souls she’d collected to sustain her wouldn’t help her hold on to the thin thread of life.
“Don’t blame yourself. There was no way you could have known.”
He lifted his head and pressed a kiss to her cold lips, lingering for a moment as if he could give her life through him. “I really do care for you. I should have told you sooner. I don’t want to lose you.”
Tears slid down her face as she felt her heart breaking for the second time. She opened her mouth several times trying to form a reply, but her body was just to weak. She never wanted anything more then to tell him how she felt at that very moment. It was irony at work, she couldn’t tell him now for all the times she didn’t tell him.
A weak voice broke through the silence, the reason for their sadness, their deception. “What about me? You told me we would be together forever.” Her words interrupted by the bubbling of blood.
A young girl, no more then 19, lay a few feet away. Her body badly broken and bruised. Blood traced a sluggish path from a deep gash on her temple. She had no hope for life, even the healers of the future would have no hope in saving her. She was losing blood too fast from multiple visible wounds on her body. Tears formed in her eyes as his next words dashed all her hopes and dreams.
“You knew it could never work for us. We weren’t meant to be, fate saw to that.” His chuckle was anything but good natured. “You of all people should understand, with all your talk of fate and destiny.” He looked at her, the hate barely disguised.
“No!” Her scream was weak and interrupted by the blood working it’s way up her throat. She swiped a hand across her face, smearing tears, blood and dirt across her chilled porcelain flesh. “You have to reconsider. We were meant to be. I wouldn’t have been here otherwise.” Her tears streaked clear paths down her face.
“No, it was destiny that this should happen. That’d she’d-” He nodded down at the girl in his arms. “-get her soul back. You were right. You can’t fight destiny.”
He knew one would have to die to save the other. At this point the didn’t care as long as he got her back. He turned his back on the dying girl and his past of betrayal.
Cradling the girl tighter, he whispered in her ear. “I’ll be with you forever and never once will I betray you. My commitment to you will last for your life time, mine and long after.”
The girl from another life time, breathed her last breath. Letting out one last choked cry. Her hopes of a future dying along with her, marking the end of her time on earth in any era.
A/N: Yes, this story is in the revision process once again. Will it be completed this time? Only time will tell. I’ll try to get better with the updates. I’ll start revising the first chapter tonight and hopefully finish it by tomorrow if I don’t find too much wrong with it. The original will remain under ff.net.
