The Beginning

But everybody's gone
and I've been here for too long
to face this on my own
well I guess this is growing up

Dammit - Blink 182

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The sun was shinning from behind the tall trees that hovered over the streets. The sidewalks lay deserted, and no cars dared disturb the cold hard pavement. From a little ways away a faint sounds of a skateboard could be heard from down the street.

Suddenly a girl, around the age of 17, 360-ed off the sidewalk. Her long black hair trailing behind her like a scarf of silk. With her backpack slung over her shoulder, swaying at every turn that was made; she made her way home. Her big black dickies short were a little ruffled from her swift movements, and her dark red belly top was plastered against her upper half from the wind. Her ear piercings and belly ring shone in the sunlight as she faced the sun.

She turned a corner, nearing a shrine that was only seconds from her speeding skateboard. As she hopped onto the first stair that lay before her-landing firmly on her feet-she caught her skateboard before it fell to the ground-her signature trick. She ran up the stairs and burst through the door, startling her mom.

"Hey mom, got practice…" She huffed as she ran to her room, dropping off her bag as she grabbed a guitar case. It wasn't one of those big wooden ones for the acoustic guitars, but a black material one that was for her electric guitar. "…Be home by 6…love ya…"

"Alright Kagome, love you too." Mrs. Higurashi sighed as she watched her daughter run right back out the door with her guitar slung across her body and her skateboard in her hand.

Kagome jumped off the stairs-about 2 away from the sidewalk-and threw down her skateboard at the same time landing square on it. She starting skating, though still being as gentle as she could with her guitar on her back.

She turned a few more corners before she stopped in front of a fairly modern house with a garage in the front. She kicked up her board and headed towards a door on the side. She heard faint voices inside-and they didn't seem too happy. She pulled open the door and walked into her sanctuary.

It was a garage yes, but it was more than that to her. It was where her friends, and band mates, hung out all the time. Whether they were practicing or just having fun, they were always there. There were posters of numerous punk and rock bands, garbage from their snacks, clothes from when they crashed their overnight and plenty more miscellaneous items.

There was little furniture, save for a black leather couch, a desk and a few chairs. A guy who was stretched out along the whole thing currently occupying the couch. He had short brown hair, but it was long enough to be tied in a small ponytail. He wore a black Linkin Park tee shirt and a pair of grey shorts with a black and white checkered belt. He had on some red, black and white DC shoes and some white ankle socks. He was observing the two others who seemed to be in a heated argument.

"Dude, what the fuck are you talking about?" One of them demanded from the boy. She had long hair that reached her waist that was currently tied in a high ponytail. Her face showed an angry facial expression and she didn't seem too happy about the current topic of the discussion they were having.

She had on a pair of white jeans that seemed to be cut off to look like floods. All over them were permanent markers in black and red. Words and tiny pictures littered all the material, and across the behind were three large letters made to look fancy-EXT. She had on a red spaghetti strap with Nirvana written across it and along her arms were black mesh. She had little make-up on and hardly any jewelry, save for the band on her left arm. She had on a pair of red `old-school' sneakers and long black and pink striped socks.

"Sango, just calm down." The other replied. He was fairly attractive with his strong build and long dark hair. At the moment it was tied in a ponytail and seemed to go along with the girl's whom he was speaking with. He wore a green vintage tee with Van Halen in big black letters across it. In the background was a picture of a few cars and a few people. He had on a pair of black shorts with a spiked belt and a little of his blue star boxers showed. He had on a leather tie around his right wrist with initials in it-KH.

"Calm down? Calm down! Of all of the years you've known me Kouga, you know that I don't calm down." Sango said through clenched teeth over the sounds of the `Ramones'.

"Did I miss something here?" Kagome asked as she dropped her board at the door. Neither of the three replied to her so she took the liberty of making them notice her. She slapped the guy on the couch lightly and walked over to the pair arguing.

"Mind explaining this to me?" Kagome asked again looking from face to face.

"I think that lover-boy over here sad that he doesn't like the way we play our music! Yeah that sums it up!" Sango said clenching her fists at her sides.

"I didn't say that Sango!"

"Right, you said that you didn't want to be in the band!" Sango's face had turned a light shade of red from the anger that she was experiencing.

"Chill Sango, take a seat." Kagome then turned to Kouga. "Is-is it true?" She asked in a quieter voice.

"Kagome I-I-it's not what it seems." Kouga couldn't find any courage looking into her eyes.

"What is it supposed to seem like then?" She asked in her quiet voice.

He stared at her, trying to find the words, but none came. He wanted to reach out to her and hold her like he used to, but he couldn't do anything with the guilt weighing on his shoulders.

"He wants to quit the band Kag." Sango said, now a little more calmed down then before. "I think it is what it seems."

Kagome looked at Kouga with eyes praying that this was all a joke-one big huge prank to fool her with. But as she looked into his eyes, she didn't see the laughter or the joy behind it all. There was guilt, sorrow, angst, and something else-something she couldn't pin point exactly. Inside her head she was going insane. Everything lashed out at her and she couldn't do anything to make them stop. She couldn't believe what she was hearing, or anything for that matter. Saying this meant that he didn't want to be with her, that he was breaking it off. She refused to believe it.

"Please tell me that this is one big joke, just some fucking prank to pull on Kagome." She whispered to him, her eyes welling up with tears.

"Kagome I'm so sorry. I-I still want to be with you though." He said lowering his voice so only she could hear him.

Kagome froze up. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to feel right now, apart from frozen and scared. She didn't know why, but she was afraid of something. He was leaving just like that, but he still wants to be with her, she was confused. Being in the band meant that they were not just intimate, but friends also. They had something to fall back on.

Sango came up beside her and decided to take it over from there.

"Go Kouga, you've done enough damage already. Don't expect us to welcome you back with open arms when you come crawling back to us, don't." Sango said firmly.

Kagome was shaken from her daze as Sango turned away from Kouga after telling him to leave. Kagome looked into his eyes, his brilliant blue eyes, hoping to find the same thing that had always drawn her to him. She didn't find it, and she felt like Jesus wasn't happy with her life as the fine way it was and just had to put a little kink in it. He placed a hand on her cheek and gently rubbed his thumb on it. How badly she wanted to lean into his touch and let it linger, but she couldn't.

She pulled away and walked over to the set of drums where his box of drumsticks were located. She picked them up and shoved them in his arms. Her afraidness turned into anger and she couldn't help put clench her jaw in fear of crying out. She took in a deep breath trying to regain her composure from before.

"You know where the door is." She said as she pointed to the door, not being able to look him in the eyes He obeyed her wishes and walked out the door-looking back only once to see the back of the woman he thought was the only one for him. He turned away and left before another word could be exchanged.

Kagome just stood there-her guitar still on her back staring at the wall before her. Thoughts and confused questions raced through her skull driving her into madness slowly. She felt a little dizzy and alone as she stood there, but it all slid away when-from either side-her friends came to help ease the pain. Sango put her arm across her shoulders and hugged her close, while the other put his arms around her waist in a comforting manner.

"Kag, are you alright?" Sango asked looking concerned at her best friend. She sniffed and then nodded her head slowly.

For a second they thought that she was going to start crying, but instead she turned to look at each of them with a smile on her face. Her eyes were a little bloodshot but they would soon regain their true colour.

"I guess this means we need a new drummer." She said laughing slightly.

The other two joined in the laughter and hugged her tightly. At least their bond-the bond of true friends-would last forever until their dying day. She loved them both with all her heart, and she guessed that she didn't love Kouga as much as she led herself to believe that she did.

"I love you guys!" Miroku, the guy with the brown hair said hugging her again.

"Don't get all teary eyed on us now, the last thing we need to see is a crying Miroku." Sango laughed as she pulled away from her friend.

"Let's get cracking on the auditions notice. We'll need a new drummer quick or else we can kiss the Battle of the Bands goodbye." Miroku said squeezing Kagome once more before waling over to the desk that held an old computer monitor.

He pressed the `On' button before plopping down in the spinney chair in front of it. Kagome and Sango covered their ears as they saw what Miroku was doing and clung to the couch as they both rushed over to it. He turned back to the monitor before realizing that he had forgotten something very important. Before he could do anything a loud high-pitched beep came from the machine that knocked Miroku back off of the chair.

When the noise ceased Kagome and Sango burst out laughing at their dim-witted friend. He pulled himself up and shook his head vigorously. He turned to the girls and then immediately started to stick his fingers in his ears and try to get back his sense of hearing. When he could finally get at least one ear to cooperate he sat back up on the chair and spun around to look at the girls momentarily.

"We definitely need a new computer before we all go deaf."

"You say that all the time!" Sango said rolling her eyes. "Let's just get to the whole `fliers' thing."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

"So read it over `Roku…" Kagome said as she was currently lying upside down on the couch.

"Drummer wanted! Need to know how to rock out. Band of three searching for four. Contact Sango, Kagome, or Miroku for more info!" Miroku read. "Work of art. I'll photocopy it tomorrow at school."

"But it costs money at school, like it would be around like fifty bucks for all the ones we need." Sango said half asleep.

"Well let's just say the librarian won't be too discouraging about letting me get about 100 photocopied for free." He said with a wink.

"Don't even wanna know!" Kagome said trying to get the mental images out of her head. "If we ain't going to practice then can I go home now?"

"I'm hurt, you don't want to spend time with your friends?" Sango said trying to act hurt. Kagome swung her foot at Sango playfully before she fell fully onto the ground.

"Well we can't practice without a drummer…so why not catch up on our sleep?" Miroku said printing off the finished copy.

"Sounds good to me man." Kagome laughed as she rubbed her head where it had connected with the ground.

Kagome was quick to gather her stuff and beat Miroku out the door. There were quick good-byes before Kagome and Miroku separated to go on their way home. She tried to keep her mind off of Kouga, but it was no use. It just didn't make any sense to her. She had refused to cry and wouldn't lower herself to that level. She knew that she was better than to shed a tear over any boy for that matter.

`What was Kouga's problems with the band? I mean he didn't have to leave it. Did he use it as an excuse to distance himself from me? Does he really not like me? Was he playing with my heart just to feel how much he's missing out? Well fuck him, I don't need some guy to love or to like for that matter. I'm independent, I'm-" Kagome suddenly went flying into the arm as she collided with someone.

She was lying on her stomach; guitar still safely and unharmed on her back. Her arms and belly were most likely scratched up, but she couldn't tell from the pain she was suffering from. She felt fine, except for the burning skin and her aching back. She tried to lift herself up off of the pavement but she couldn't. She carefully slid her guitar off of her back and onto the ground beside her. She rolled the opposite way onto her back and let her eyes close. The trees left tiny specks of orange light dancing on her eyelids only to cast a image to her own eyes. Then as quickly as it came, it left and then she felt someone's presence over her.

"Are you alright?" Came a voice that sounded to be made of something sweeter than chocolate. She opened her eyes and then she finished her train of thought. `-in heaven.'

Two amber orbs looking to be made of liquid were dancing with concern in front of her. She was almost certain that he wasn't of this planet as he backed his face up a bit and let her see the full of him. He had the most beautiful head of hair that she had ever seen and it made her want to run her fingers through it. His face was absolutely stunning and she was pulled into a half-minded daze as she stared into his eyes.

"Are you alright?" He repeated. Kagome shook herself out of the daze and looked anywhere but his eyes.

"Seeing as I just fell off my board and right onto the road, should I be?" She laughed as she struggled up. She pulled herself up a bit before he stuck out a hand to help her get up. She took it willingly and started to immediately brush off some of the dirt that had caught onto her clothing.

"What the fuck happened?" Kagome asked as she bent down and picked up her guitar and positioned it back on her lap. She would check at home to see if it was okay.

"Well you were skating and I was listening to my music really loud when we collided. How we did, I'm not sure. All I remember is feeling the impact of you before you went flying over here."

"Oh, well then. Thanks for the help, but I think maybe next time you should watch where you're going." Kagome said as she retrieved her board.

"Excuse me? Watch where I'm going? I think you should watch where you're going. You're the one on the board here, going faster than someone walking! You could've probably taken an old granny out!" He snapped back at her.

She was getting a little ticked off at him and pulled the hair that had gotten in her face away and fixed her clothes so she got back her look. He seemed to be finally taking in her appearance because his eyes had slowly gotten wider and his attention seemed to be elsewhere than their previous disagreement. He admired her style and her ability to look pretty good in guys clothing. If she had any curves, he clearly couldn't see them-being hidden by the clothing she was in.

"Whatever, does it really matter?" Kagome said sighing in annoyance. When he didn't answer Kagome waved an arm in front of his vision. He seemed to have been off somewhere inside his head, instead of paying attention to the conversation.

"Hello? Anyone home?" She said bending down so she was looking him in the eyes.

"Oh sorry." He mumbled as she appeared to be trying to get his attention.

"It's ok. By the way, the name's Kagome." She said offering her scratched up hand. He took it and shook it gently, not wanting to cause her any pain. They stood there for a moment holding onto each other's hands, just looking at one another until Inuyasha realized that he hadn't introduced himself.

"Oh right! I'm Inuyasha." He said with a boyish grin. She smiled back at him and they both slowly released one another's hand. "So where do you live?"

Kagome was about to answer him when she was thinking that he maybe wanted to stalk her or something. She narrowed her eyes slowly, but he seemed to have noticed the suspicious signs coming from her.

"No I mean like maybe if you're going my way then I can walk you home or something."

"Oh, sorry. Jumping to conclusions." She said blushing slightly. "I live down Tama blvd. In the shrine."

"Luckily you are my way, I just moved in with my brother, well actually half brother. I was kicked out of private school so I have to go to the nearby high school." He said as they started walking.

"Private school eh?" Kagoem said laughing slightly. She looked over at him and observed his look. He had on some tan shorts and a Volcom tee shirt. He had earphones around his neck with the wire leading to under his shirt where an MP3 player was most likely located. He had on some black Osiris skate shoes with silver lining. "Don't look to private school to me."

"That's because I'm not a prep. Not everyone who goes to private school is a prep."

"Your right, there's apart from the preps: mama's boys, gay's, and then there's the obvious nerds and wannabe's." She said thinking about it. "So which one, gay?"

"No, definitely not. I prefer the ladies thanks." He said looking over at her smiling face.

"Sure you aren't. You seem the strong, silent and queer type. Like I mean when most guys see me, it's like tongues out of their mouth and then they all desperately try to ask me out. I mean and since you haven't done anything yet, then well you're classified as gay." Kagome joked with him.

"Well I'm sorry there, but who says that you're all that." He said raising an eyebrow.

She laughed before asking him a question.

"Why'd you get kicked out of private school anyway?"

"They said that I was too `ill-tempered' and that I didn't cope well with their staff. And maybe it was also the fact that I burnt down half of the library and I flooded all of the bathrooms. But you know, I'll never really know."

Kagome laughed.

"Oh I have a little rebel on my hands do it? A bad boy."

"Well it depends what type of bad you mean." He said smirking. Kagome finally got what he meant and opened her mouth a bit and her eyes widened slightly.

"You're a dirty boy too!" She exclaimed as she let out a giggle. He caught her glance and raised both of his eyebrows twice in a quick motion. She burst out laughing again at his motion, unable to hold it back.

"Do you have the time?" She asked as she saw her home only a block away.

"Uh yeah." He looked at his watch. "It's 5:55."

"Oh crap, I have to be home like now." She said throwing her board down and starting off.

"Was nice walking you home." He said.

"Yeah, likewise. So maybe I'll see you around or whatever."

"Yeah whatever." He watched her skate away until she jumped up onto some stairs about a block away and her figure disappeared from his viewing range. He pulled back on his earphones and turned back on his music.
