Chapter 4: Arrival
The trip to the castle went pretty uneventful for Kagome and Sesshomaru. Both were content in walking in the peace of the noises around them. Oddly enough, they were not attacked.
Kagome gasped upon reaching the gates of the Northern lord's castle. It was beautiful. A huge white palace that seemed warm and welcome to any passerby in need of assistance.
The northern lord was not one who was against the human race, none of the lords were, except Sesshomaru that is. Yuki though, was weary to them. Humans had killed her family. Her mother helped her to safety, then had died from inflicted wounds. Since then, she hasn't been able to bear the presence of humans for more then ten minutes without becoming angry or upset.
Kagome walked with Sesshomaru through the large white gates of the castle. They were heavily guarded with youkai, who sneered at Kagome upon her entrance. They walked up a dirt path before reaching the two large, wooden doors, which were opened by servant who bowed to Sesshomaru and smiled kindly to Kagome.
Kagome marveled at the inside of the castle, though her face didn't show anything. The front room was huge. The walls were all white, pictures of Neko youkai lined the walls beautifully. The floor was white and seemed to glimmer when hit by the light. The ceiling was high above the floor, when looking up you could see the outer hallways of the second, third, and fourth floors.
Looking left, right, and a head of her, there were three hallways. Sesshomaru wasted no time grabbing her arm and turning to walk towards the left. Many anonymous doors and hallways flew past her as she walked quickly so Sesshomaru wasn't dragging her. Every wall held either a picture or a mirror, surrounded by an intricate design of snowflakes, or beautiful gems. They were especially rich!
Making a right at the end of the hallway, they came upon a large, black door. He quickly opened it and entered, pulling her closely behind. There was a large table in the middle of the room. It was in the shape of a square. Two chairs were at every side. Everyone in the room quickly raised with their entrance as Kagome bowed deeply.
The first to speak was a man at the top of the table. He had long, black hair falling over his shoulders and reaching to his knees. His eyes were piercing green, like that of a cat. On his for head was a snowflake and behind each temple, was a cat ear. The man was tall and wore a plain black kimono.
"Miko Kagome." He bowed. "It is a pleasure to have one such as you in my home. I can feel your power and might I add the it is quite impressive!" He said.
The lady next to him had the same symbol n her own for head. Her eyes were deep yellow, accented by her own black hair. It reached to her waist and was pulled delicately over her shoulder. Her light purple kimono clung to her curves in all the right places, revealing her flawless figure. Sakura blossoms adorned the fabric of her kimono, along with the pink obie, tight lightly around her waist.
Her red lips shown on her pale skin. Her nails were painfully long, and sharper then Kagome would've ever imagined they possible. Although she was extremely beautiful, she did have a threatening air about her that dared one to bother her.
"Awe, how rude of me, this is my mate, Yuki. To my left is Lord Hikari, and on my right are Lord Mizuko and Lady Sakuya. And I presume you have already met Lord Sesshomaru from previous encounters."
Kagome bowed, her emotionless expression not wavering. Sesshomaru walked to one of the empty chairs on the last side of the table. There was one left next to him, and one next to Hikari. Kagome didn't know where to sit, so she decided to stand unless someone told her otherwise.
"Please have a seat next to Lord Sesshomaru, Lady Kagome." Kagome nodded and gratefully sat don next to the taiyoukai. He seemed not to mind, and after that long walk, her feet could use rest.
Lord Hikari was shorter then the rest of the lords. His short brown hair framed his face, and he was grinning at her, giving her a good look at his pearly white fangs. His eyes were golden brown, shining nicely on his tanned face. On his for head was a golden sun. All in all, he was good looking. There was no doubting that, but the way he smiled at her was unnerving.
He wore a traditional brown kimono with a paw print on the front. He was a bear youkai, and his claws were just as frightening as Yuki's.
Lord Mizuko was very tall, right under Sesshomaru it seemed. His hair was a beautiful shade of midnight blue, which could easily be mistaken for shiny black in the night. His icy blue eyes were the same color as the raindrop adorning his for head. He had a soft look on his pale face, smiling politely.
He wore a white kimono, with raindrops on the outer edges of the sleeves. Wings were folded gently over the back of his kimono, indicating that he was an eagle youkai. His claws were more like talons and the middle one had a blue raindrop on the end of it.
Lady Sakuya had hair and eyes matching the icy blue color of the raindrop adorning her flawless pale skin. Her lips were very pale pink, and were slightly parted. Her hair was pulled up in a simple bun, letting two strands frame her face.
Her kimono was baby blue, with an obie a shade darker. It clung nicely to her curves much the way Yuki's did, but she was a lot more developed then Yuki. On her back were two neatly folded wings, indicating that she too, was an eagle youkai.
"Well Lady Kagome," Sakuya started. "I assume Sesshomaru-sama has told you your reasons for being present today." Kagome nodded. "You're needed to be able to sense the presence of the dragon demon. No one else can, as we all lack the abilities found in miko and dragon youkai the same." Once again, Kagome nodded.
"I've heard of your purification arrow, and I must say, you are famous for it. We require for you to use to bring death to the dragon, and to free the lost souls of our men. Can you help us Lady Kagome?" Sakuya asked.
"I'd be glad to." Kagome answered In a flat tone.
Sakuya smiled sweetly before thanking Kagome, who nodded in return.
"Tsubame." Yuki called. The young servant from earlier stepped into the room. Bowing politely, she walked to Yuki and bowed once more. "Yes, milady?" Yuki smiled.
"Could you take our guest to the last room in the northern wing please?" Tsubame smiled and bowed before exiting and motioning for Kagome to follow her out, which she did. After a quick bow, Kagome turned and walked after the young demoness.
"Hey, what's wrong with her she seems, broken." Hikari asked Sesshomaru.
Sesshomaru sighed before starting. "Wouldn't you be broken if you lost all you had to live for?" he asked. Sesshomaru sighed, obviously this small talk was getting nowhere.
"You all know of Kagome, and the group she traveled with. You knew of Naraku, and how he was defeated and the shikon was placed back inside the girl. What you don't know, was what happened afterwards."
Every one nodded for him to go on.
"Kagome's been strong through all of this, she's earned my respect, and even as much as I hate to admit it, the human has my trust as well. She's protected Rin with her life during some of the battles that I was present for. She was even harmed protecting myself. At the time, my brother and I had come to an understanding. We no longer fought, but we didn't get along. She has proven that she would die for her friends, even myself. That is how she has my respect. But I trust her, simply because my instincts tell me too. In the end, her pup was killed, and my brother went to hell with that dead wench. Her friends the monk and the exterminator have put it in the past, moved on. They're married and the girl is pregnant. Which is why Kagome left so easily. Everyone around her was happy, but she was sad and alone. That is why she's become so 'broken' as you say, and why she sheds no emotion. She's not weak, like most pathetic humans out there, she has a strong will and I respect her for it. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some things I'll need to take care of."
With that, Sesshomaru left the other lords and ladies in silence, until Hikari spoke that is.
"Wow, that girl has it rough." He said. Sakuya nodded sadly, remembering of her own life without her family to be there for her. She quickly excused herself and walked back to her room.
After many hallways, doors, and numerous flights of stairs, Tsubame finally stopped in front of a door.
"This is your room during your stay, Lady Kagome. To your left are Sesshomaru-sama's chambers. Across from you is Hikari-sama, and to the right of him, is Mizuko-sama and Sakuya-sama. And the room at the end is Milord and Lady's chambers. Now let's go in and get you a bath, and perhaps a new kimono." She said.
Kagome walked into the room. For a second, she looked amazed, but she quickly changed moods at Tsubame's giggle. The room was well furnished. The futon sat against the left wall with a small chest at the end. On the right wall was a vanity and another door. In the corner was a wardrobe closet made of mahogany. The back wall had a large screen blowing in the wind, a balcony shone through the screen, overlooking the vast spread of forest around her.
"Lady Kagome, why are you always so distant? I've yet to see you smile." Tsubame said.
"Tsubame-chan, I've yet to see myself smile in months. It hurts so bad. I want to cry all the time, and I do. When I'm alone, I cry, but what does that accomplish? Showing yourself that you're weak?" Kagome said.
Sesshomaru could hear their conversation in his room, and Sakuya, curious as to what was wrong with the young miko, stood outside the door, listening intently. Normally, she wouldn't care for a human but Kagome was different.
"Kagome-chan, why are you so sad?" Kagome hesitated, then told her of the well, her whole life story pretty much. "In the end, I had nothing left. What is the reason to smile? I haven't even seen Koga for a month before the end. What's the reason to live if you have nothing to live for? I'll never let anyone close to me again! I wasn't meant to love and I don't intend to let myself get hurt again." She said.
"Tsubame-chan, you're my only friend now, but could you please, keep this to yourself? My two friends at the village and Sesshomaru are the only ones who know about the well's powers." Tsubame nodded and stood from where they were now on the futon.
"We'll need to get you bathed. Kagome-chan. And if you ever need a friend, I'm here for you, Kay'?" Kagome nodded, blinking back her tears. 'I'm not weak, I won't cry. Not in front of her, not in front of anyone!' she thought.
"Arigatou Tsubame-chan" Kagome said as she walked in through the room with the hot spring.
Sakuya felt tears pricking her eyes as she left Kagome's door and headed for her own chambers. 'No one should have to suffer like that.' She thought.
Sesshomaru sighed in his room, hearing that the conversation was over. He did not like the fact that she was in this much pain. Why? He didn't know, it just hit him in the chest when he felt the sadness radiating from her in waves.
It bothered him that he cared, but not as much as it should, considering he found her to be a valuable ally. But he couldn't place a finger on what the feeling in his chest was, just that he didn't like it and therefore, willed it to go away.
His own emotionless barriers were placed from emotional pain when his own mother had died, his family had fallen apart. He never let himself fall in love, in fear that this might happen to his own family, and after time, concluded that emotions are worthless to him, and have no part in his life, thus becoming cold and distanced.
But now that someone else experienced it, he couldn't help but feel pity. Had people pitied him as well? He didn't need pity. So why did she? He growled, this was getting aggravating.
