Chapter 6: heartache
Kagome awoke the next morning, held tightly in the demon lord's protective embrace. She thought back to the night before when she had kissed him, and out of the blue, found her self being kissed back. She felt her stomach flutter, and with that single feeling, she became frightened.
'I can't be doing this.' She thought as she broke free from Sesshomaru's grasp. She quickly ran out the door and down the palace halls. She had no idea where she was, but she needed to get away.
She soon found too large doors and ran outside to collapse on the ground. Pulling her knees to her chest, she allowed herself to cry as she did the night before.
It was all too much for her to bear. She now knew that she was attracted to Sesshomaru, hell, she even smiled. It was not like her to do such things. The Kagome she was now would never allow her guard to slip, maybe before, but not now. And she would not let herself fall in love again.
But was that what she was really doing? Was she falling in love with a youkai who had merely been in her presence for three days since the harsh battle two months ago? No, not yet, but something told her that if she didn't cut the attraction she had for him right then and there that she would. And she simply would not have that.
She already knew that if she were to fall in love, there feeling would not be mutual. She knew she held the trust and respect of the taiyoukai, but that is all she had and all she cared to have.
Finding herself wanting more would surly kill her, tear her apart piece by piece. Her broken heart had been healing with the gift of time. It was all she needed, to have time to get over the broken heart she has possessed for over two months. She would not allow anyone the chance to break it again, as it was not yet fully healed.
'No one will ever get the chance to do that again.'
Sesshomaru awoke to find that the warmth he had been holding was only a pillow. He grunted in annoyance. Sitting up and slowly getting up from the futon, his mind recalled the night before.
'I kissed her.' He thought.
'Why in the hell did I do that?' Sesshomaru however, could not process and answer to the troublesome question and found himself wondering where she had gone after she was the one that said that they were to sleep.
Then he smelt it, he tears and they were coming from outside. Curious as to what was bothering her when he smelt no other youkai, and none of her bood, he found himself wandering towards the balcony.
Looking down, he saw Kagome, lying on the grass outside the castle entrance, curled into a ball and crying. Her scent was laced in sadness, and he had some what of an idea why. He thought he did at least.
Sesshomaru was under the impression that another dream had bothered her that night and she was now crying in response. Sesshomaru sighed. He had no idea how to comfort her, he just knew that he wanted to.
But why? He didn't understand. He never wanted to help people so why did he have a sudden urge to go to her and relieve her emotional pain? He sat down on his furon, deciding to dismiss Kagome, but found that his feet were walking to the balcony of their own accord.
Sighing in defeat, he jumped over the ledge and landed just below his chambers. Sighing once more, he made his way over to the crying girl and kneeled beside her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.
Kagome gasped when she felt a hand rest on her shoulder, she'd been so far off in her own world, she hadn't even noticed him walking towards her. She quickly sat up and hastily began wiping away her tears. She was ashamed to once agin be caught off guard in her emotional turmoil. She didn't want others to see her like this.
Looking up into Sesshomaru's eyes, she saw emotion quickly flutter through them. But as quick as it came, it was gone. Only to be replaced by utter indifference.
"Did you have a dream about it again?" his smooth velvety voice reaching her ears. She shivered and shook her head no. Then it snapped.
'I didn't dream about it! But, I've dreamed about it every day and nothing has changed.' She thought, feverishly trying to find an answer, then it hit.
'Sesshomaru.' She thought. 'Sleeping with him must have prevented the memories. I was…content last night. Maybe that had something to do with it.' She sighed realizing the reason for her being content was that she was in Sesshomaru's arms.
'NO!' she yelled at her self in her mind. 'I won't fall only to be hurt, not again.'
Sesshomaru was surprised. Did she just say no? She said she'd been having those dreams for the entire two months and all of a sudden last night, or rather, yesterday she had none! None of it made sense.
"Well then why are you crying?"
'I will inquire her dream on a later occasion.' He thought, turning back to Kagome.
"I'm just confused is all. I think something's happening to me." She said. Sesshomaru had no idea what she was talking about and sat there, studying her face, looking for an answer for her strange behavior.
"And is the change good or bad?" he asked. Kagome seemed to take a minute to ponder this, for she did not answer right away, but instead sat there, a faraway look in her eyes indicating that she had not known the answer to the question in advance.
"Well, it's something I vowed not to let happen to me again. It is good in a sense, and bad in another." She thought about how much she should say, and finding it harmless, she continued. "I don't want to be hurt and if I make the wrong decision, I will be. It's futile to ignore, it'll most likely grow. The feelings will keep becoming stronger." She said. Then, she covered her mouth, she'd said too much!
Standing up, she began to walk away when Seshomaru caught her arm. "Where do you think you are going?" he asked? Raising an eyebrow.
"And what unwanted feelings do you appear to harbor?" he asked, slightly curious as to what the answer would be. Sighing, she turned to look at him. She would not tell him, that she was sure of. But she needed to leave before she felt the real attraction.
"I'll need to leave. As for what feelings I have, I cannot tell you, but what I can say is that it will not turn out well if I continue to stay here." She said, turning to leave once more. This time, he watched her walk away, headed for the forest.
Her words slowly sunk in, but he had found that he couldn't place a meaning with them. Then, he noticed she was walking in to a dangerous forst with no protection or sense of direction. Where was she going anyway? Soon enough, he found himself running after her.
"Kagome." He yelled. She suddenly stopped and turned around. Inclining her head, as if to say 'what?' she replaced her mask of indifference and stared into his endless golden depths.
Yamamato paced the castle angrily. "Where are they?" he'd been fuming since he found out that they were gone and immediately sent a messenger to Sesshomaru's castle. It had been almost two days and still they did not return.
His men had all been perfectly fine, as had Mizuko and Hikari's. He supposed he was either stalled, or had plans. Either way, he needed to find out more about this youkai, and so far no one seemed to have a trace.
What angered him the most though, is the fact that they had the most powerful miko lend them her aide, and she suddenly disappeared with the western lord, rumors were spreading. All having to do with dirty thoughts.
His messenger had yet to return to him, leading him to believe that they's either not been found, or he'd been killed. Although he preffered that his trusty servant was still alive, he always had more and sent another that morning.
Sesshomaru walked up to Kagome. "Tell me, what is on your mind." He said. Kagome shook her head and winced as she heard a frustrated growl echo in the quiet forest. Sesshomaru glared at her, as if telling her to tell him now, or have the chance to tell no one at all.
Sighing, Kagome chose to be safe and simply said what she hoped would make him leave her alone now, and perhaps for a lot longer.
"I don't want to be hurt again so I'm simply trying to stay away from you." She said coolly as if it were nothing. And he looked unaffected as well, that is until her earlier words sunk in along with his new found information.
"I am not a fool Kagome, I would never allow myself to hurt you in such away." Sesshomaru was just as shocked as Kagome, (who was now gaping by the way) there words spilled fourth as if he had no way to refrain them from passing his lips.
'Did I just say something along the lines of me being with her?' he silently questioned. 'If so, why?' Looking over at her beautiful form once more, he sighed. 'Is it because I want to be with her?' he asked.
"Do you have any idea what you just said to me Sesshomaru?" she asked. 'What the hell is wrong with him, he should be ranting on about how disgraceful I am to the human race, although they're not very far above me in ranks.'
Sesshomaru sighed before nodding. His instincts had told him that it was right to do this, and he ALWAYS obeyed his instincts. So walking over to Kgaome, he picked her up and began walking back towards his palace.
"Yes, I do." He said.
