InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Sacrifice ❯ Who am I? ( Chapter 1 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

The woman lying on her stomach upon the grassy knoll moaned as she woke, her head pounding terribly and wishing that the voices around her would quiet down so that they didn't aggravate her pounding head so much. There was only one thought in her mind as she moved herself into a sitting position and held her aching head: who am I? She gasped softly when a pair of gentle hands helped her to stand up from the ground and led her into a hut near a river bed.

“Are you alright miss?” a kind young woman asked her and she looked at the woman, her eyes blurring before she passed out and fell heavily against the woman. “I guess that's a no,” the woman said and with the help of her husband got the woman onto what was once her mother's futon, before the elder woman died.

“Her clothing is so strange,” the woman's husband commented as he looked upon the long sleeved white shirt with a tan neck tie and the much too short tan skirt. “But her face…she looks familiar.”

“What's this?” he heard his wife say and looked to see her pulling a golden locket from around the sleeping woman's neck and opened it. “Taro look at this, these tiny paintings, they're so strange.”

“I thought she looked familiar,” he said with wonder as he stared at the two faces held on either side inside the locket. “She's the miko that travels with the hanyou Inuyasha. But I heard that she had died. That was nearly a month ago.”

“Someone should let them know, they must be mourning so terribly. I know I would be if I lost a friend.”

“You are wise my wife,” the man said and looked at the sleeping Kagome who lay still as death, her breathing the only testament to the life inside of her.

“Inuyasha,” Sango said as she came upon the hanyou who was once again crying silent tears as he sat in the grass, leaning up against the side of the well that had brought Kagome into his life so many years ago.

“What do you want Sango?” he asked despondently doing nothing to hide his tears that seemed endless.

“No one's seen you since yesterday, since you went across the well to tell Kagome's mother,” the taijiya said in worry for her friend as she sat beside him. “Are you alright?”

“…I need her,” he said his voice cracking as more tears fell and his heartbroken sobs returned.

“I know,” Sango whispered to her friend sadly as she pulled him gently into her arms and rocked the broken hanyou. “We all do,” she said too soft for him to hear through his sobs.

“He needs her,” Kikyou said sadly as she walked up to the taijiya that rocked the weeping Inuyasha in her arms. “His soul is dying without her. He never felt this for me,” she said as she petted the silver locks in a motherly motion. “Kaede is not fairing well, her illness grows worse, her will to live has waned as has many others since the death of the girl.”

“Will she recover?” Sango asked worriedly as she noticed that Inuyasha had cried himself into an exhausted sleep.

“I fear not,” Kikyou said sadly. “I fear my sister is dying.”

“Mother,” Inuyasha moaned softly as he woke in the middle of the night to the wispy sight of his ghostly mother kneeling before him.

“Oh my poor boy,” she said sadly as she looked upon her depressed son and leaned forward, her ghostly lips brushing a kiss to his forehead. “She lives Inuyasha. Kagome lives.”
