Save the Last Dance
Summary: Kagome and InuYasha have been friends and dance partners since second grade, never once have they admitted their true feelings for each other. But an incident occurs that forces them to either tell each other or lose the other...forever.
Rated PG13 for language and suicidal.

InuYasha sat on his bed, holding a picture of his beloved Kagome.
A tear trickled down his cheek and onto the picture.
Days, weeks maybe even months, he didn’t know how long he’d been in his room.
‘Ever since she died, I don’t will myself to live’ he thought as another tear fell.
He remembered everything about her, the way her wavy, raven hair would whip around after every turn, the way her chocolate brown eyes held so much love and happiness, and even the way she would get cute little dimples on her cheeks when she laughed or smiled even. The thought of her smile warmed his heart. Gods how he loved to see her smile.
He could still even hear her laugh. She mainly laughed at him, but he didn’t care, as long as she was laughing. He remembered doing all sorts of stupid shit just to hear that laugh.
And now, all it is is but a fleeting memory of his love.
In his sleep he would often dream of her, only to awaken in a cold sweat, crying for her.
When he did that once, before she died, she came into the room and stayed with him until they both fell asleep.’ Damnit Kagome, why did they have to take you away from me?’ he cried in his mind. He lay on his bed, trying to get decent nights sleep, but once again, as he closed his eyes he saw her.

**************Flash Back************** (It’s a long one)
2nd and 3rd grade, Kagome and InuYasha walked into the gym just in time to hear the announcement and to be paired up.
“Taisho and Higurashi, front and center” boomed the voice. “Kagome, this is your dance partner, InuYasha Taisho, and InuYasha, this is your dance partner, Kagome Higurashi.
You two had better become friends and fast, for this is going to be a long journey and you need your partner as you friend.”
The two kids sat, side by side, and talked idly about nothing.
It was then that InuYasha knew he liked her, but it wasn’t until their 7th year together that he began to love her.

Skip to seven years later and their first competition in nationals.
“Now Kagome, InuYasha do not be nervous, this is our first trip to the nationals since, well since 100 years ago. You two are our best dancers. Make me proud” she said before sending them off. Kagome was 15 and InuYasha had just turned 16.
“Nervous?” InuYasha asked.
“Me? Nervous....noooo” she sighed, honestly she was scared out of her mind.
“Kagome, I’ve know you for what seven years now? I know when you’re lying so tell”
“Ok I am” she confessed.
He wrapped her in a comforting embrace and whispered “It will be ok; Mrs. Takimouru said we were the best and we are. I wouldn’t want any other dance partner here with me.
We worked hard, we deserve it” he said re-assuring her.

They stepped out on the dance floor and began their slow dance.
They danced to the song “Because you loved me” by Celine Dion.
‘Ironic they play this’ thought, shrugging it off.
He took her hand and placed his free one around her waist and she placed hers around his neck.
“Breathe” he mouthed to her.
He saw her take a deep breath and let it out again. He chuckled slightly.
When the dance was over, the judges gave them a perfect score and sent them off.

Later they called out the best dancers.
The judges echoed “And in this years dance off the winners are” every one held their breath as the gym went silent. Kagome fidgeted with her hands as the judges looked up and screamed “....KAGOME HIGURASHI AND INUYASHA TAISHO!!!!”
InuYasha looked over and saw Kagome’s face light up.
She grabbed his hand and they ran out to the stage.
He wrapped his arms around her waist and turned her to face him.
He leaned forward and kissed her straight on the lips, in front of hundreds of people.
He had no clue how she’d react, but when she kissed back, his world stopped.
They broke apart for a moment. It registered that for both of them, it was their first kiss.
And they wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
From then on, he knew he wouldn’t be with any other woman if he couldn’t be with her.

She was very hesitant, not wanting to ruin their friendship, but he assured her that it wouldn’t and if anything else, it would help their dancing.
After three years of chasing and persuading her, she finally said yes.
InuYasha was ecstatic. They spent every second with each other from then on.

Now Kagome, at age 18, and InuYasha, at age 19, were known as the best. No one dared to oppose them. They won every competition from that day three years ago.
Finally at one of the few breaks the couch gave them, Kagome and InuYasha sat on his couch.
She was cuddled up in his arms. Something had been bothering her all day.
“Kags tell me what's been bothering you” he said coaxing her to tell.
“Hmm oh its nothing, it’s ... I was thinking about our next competition that’s all” she lied.
“Mmm hmm spill it” he said.
“Uhh well....” she began right as her cell went off.
“Hmm saved by the cell” she laughed as she answered.
“Konichiwa” she said cheerily.
Some one mumbled something on the other line.
“Oh...um one sec” she looked to InuYasha “Umm Yash, ya mind if I continue this outside?”
“Go ahead” he sighed shooing her out comically.
She walked outside.
He heard her talking, her voice went lower and lower filling with pain.
She walked back in around 5 minutes later. She looked like she had whipped away a few tears and sighed as she came in.
“So what was that all about?” he asked concerned
“Ummm it was, my mom” she lied again.
“No it wasn’t your mom is out of town and can’t call, remember you told me, that’s why you were staying here. So truth”
“It was my doctor”
“Doctor.....what...what’s wrong?” he asked more scared.
“Remember when I passed out a practice?”
“Uhh Huh”
“Well that’s what it was about”
“And....why did you?”
“They found....they found a” she took a breath “They found a cancer cell and it was the cause”
“Cancer...but you can’t that just....it doesn’t...”
“It does and yes I do...”
He pulled her into a tight embrace, much like the one at the nationals when they were younger.


And all we had

Skip to one year later. Kagome is 19 and InuYasha is 20. It was their last competition in Tokyo, Japan. Kagome stood nervously, checking herself in the mirror.
She had on he black slinky dress and 2 inch heels.
InuYasha had on a matching black tux and red tie. He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her possessively.
“You look amazing” he said sweetly.
She turned in his arms and kissed him.
“Arigotu.” She replied.
“C’mon we need to get going” he said ushering her to the car.

A half hour later and they arrived at the theater that they would be performing in.
“Nervous?” he asked like he had all those years ago.
“Me? Nervous...Noooo” she replied in the same way she had along time ago.
He smirked as she laughed off her nervousness.

She took a deep breath as they entered the building.
He held her hand and squeezed it to calm her.
“Save the last dance?” he asked trying to calm her
She nodded as they entered the building.

“Now we would like to present for the last time, the dancing styles of KAGOME HIGURASHI AND INUYASHA TAISHO” boomed the same loud voice.
“This is just like when we were 15 and 16” she sighed
“Yea...eerie huh?” he sighed
The eerie part was it was the same song as their first dance.
The music began.
“InuYasha.... this is...”
“The same song we danced to the first time” he mused
“Because you loved me” she said.
They finished their dance and when everything seemed perfect, tragedy made its move.
Kagome stopped breathing and fell to the floor.
InuYasha went down with her and held her close to him.
“It’ll be ok Kagome, I promise”0o0o0o0

She awoke a few hours later in the hospital.
“Inu...InuYasha?” she whispered
“I’m here Kagome, I’m here” he said squeezing her hand.
“What happened?”
“You fainted”
“InuYasha”
“Yea”
“ Thank you “
“For what?”
“Saving me the last dance”
“Kagome....”
“I love you” she breathed quietly.
“I love you too.” He said worriedly.
She closed her eyes and slowly the monitor buzzed saying she was dead.
“Kagome...Kagome......KAGOME!!!”
Tears spilled from his eyes.
“KAGOME....DON’T LEAVE ME!!!!” he cried out. But he knew he’d lost her.

“Kagome” he sighed as he woke from his sleep.
“Kagome....why ...why did you leave me?” he cried out.
He got up and stumbled to the mirror.
He looked in and still saw her face.


If I look deep enough
So many inside that are
Just like you're taking over me.>

“Why do I still see you?” he murmured as he studied the image.
He saw her chocolate eyes staring back at him.
‘I love you’ they seemed to say.
Tears spilled from his eyes.
“Always, I’ll always love you” he said before falling into a deep sleep.
A bottle of sleeping pills and other medications lay emptied at the side of his bed.
He relaxed knowing he would be able to see his love again.
