InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Scorched ❯ Prologue ( Prologue )
Scorched
By Mystified Starlight
A/N-Even though this seems unorthodox, I felt that a prologue was needed in this case. It tells of the basic demon story with what has changed in my A/U future. I wanted to give it a try.
No flames; if you don't like the story, then please don't read it.
This shall also be my only disclaimer for the story; I never saw the point in repeating it chapter after chapter when you say it once and it's just as meaningful.
Disclaimer-The only thing I own in here is the plotline. All characters in this story do not belong to me, unless I say otherwise.
Thanks for reading!
~Informative Prologue~
Hundreds of years ago, the world was a place where working hard was the only way to survive, the only way to ignore the fact that one wrong move or thought could possibly land you on the dinner plate of vast arrays of demons and hanyous.
They were the ones that ran things, told you how it was supposed to be, told you how worthless you really were as a human because of how easily you died. Humans obeyed all laws set down for them without question or argument for fear of losing their lives.
This was a time when humans were lucky to live to the age of forty, without the added threat of demons.
Almost no demons would defend the human race back then, and they weren't above breaking them emotionally and physically. There were still demon lords that controlled the humans and weaker demons completely by giving them the choice between backbreaking labor and death. Other demons would just kill every human being they came upon, thinking of it as a good deed because they would probably die soon anyway.
And then, there were the lesser few that grew to actually love and care for humans, and took care of them instead of forcing them to be slaves. Caring demons were seen to be just as weak as humans themselves, and usually destroyed before unthinkable half-breeds were created. Any hanyou found was to be killed, as well, but many did manage to escape.
Being hanyou was often more than difficult. Neither race would accept you, and if you did survive you were more than likely to end up alone. Many would never accept that.
Others, however, would play the card they were dealt. If they were able to hold their own in battles, they often thought of themselves worthy enough to live and earn reputations of their own. The few that did survive had managed to defeat every demon that crossed them and were legendary, especially amongst humans.
Now, in the present times, humans believe that demons were as extinct as the dinosaurs, or had never existed at all. Any demons that did exist did so in hiding, often pretending that they themselves were humans so they could know everything happening in the world today.
Demons were erased from human memory. Schools outlawed teachings that had anything to do with demons from the past. Parents were discouraged from telling stories of demons so that any talk of demons in the future would sound as ridiculous as the tooth fairy or Santa Claus. For the most part, demons were erased, thought to never have existed.
The humans had grown incredibly ignorant, but they had also grown immensely in population, and even weak there's power in numbers. At one point the powerful and most hateful demons attempted to control the population, but eventually even they were reduced to hiding from the caring demons that fought back. The demons that were either too smart or too weak to fight went into hiding to save their revolt for a time when humans became foolishly distracted.
No time better like the present.
Over time humans had grown to believe demons no longer held any power over them. The creatures began secretly gathering and forging plans; there would be a battle someday over the dominant species of the planet. Demon lords planned to once again take control of both the humans and the weak demons, putting them in their place once and for all.
Humans wouldn't win by themselves; they needed supernatural help…of course, they also need to realize that demons are real, and would very soon be slaughtering those that are defenseless.
Before the war goes underway, the existing hanyous would have to find their place in society, for there was no 'third side'. One was either for the humans or against them, so the choice was theirs;
Take the side of the beasts that loathe their very existence and would destroy them in a human heartbeat? Or become powerful allies to the humans, the very creatures that sometimes taught demons love and care, the creatures that only lived a hundred years max and would be near pointless for a true demon to become attached to, the creatures that currently dominated the planet in a world no one would have imagined centuries ago?
For most, that would be a difficult decision to make. But for some, the answer will always be obvious, because although at times thoughtless and careless creatures, humans did teach a very valuable lesson with their very existence.
After all, which is better, living a hundred years knowing what true love is in your heart?
Or living for thousands of years on earth all alone?
