This message is to my reviewers on mediaminer.org
A/N: Hey, I wanted to thank my two reviewers for reviewing! haha, at least I know that there are ppl reading my fic, even if its only two at the moment (haha, c, not degrading, i said at the moment, lol).
To Stormcloud: Thanks for the awesome advice! as you see, I have changed the summary for you. XD.. and as for having Inuyasha say "I love you" right away, definitely not(!!!!!) what i had in mind, lol, but thnx again for the concern. And for the originality, I haven't read quite as many fics as you, so I can't guarantee that it'll be too original (b/c I don't know a lot about what's already out there), but I do have some twists that have been forming evilly in the recesses of my mind, and hopefully I can get them into words nicely. Once again, thnx for your advice, and I will definitely keep it in mind. =D
To Halex: Thanks girl, you're such an awesome friend. I know I'm going to have an extremely avid fan from you! I hope I don't let you down, and I hope that when the afore mentioned twists come out, that you won't come and burn my house down and/or strangle me to death... I LOVE YOU, DON'T HURT ME!! haha
And now, for the slightly anticipated... (eerie suspense music)
CHAPTER 2!! (Duhn duhn duhhhhh)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kago me had come home dirty and upset, asking quietly to skip dinner. Her mother, being the intuitive person that she is, did not question her unusual behavior and strategically kept the boys from asking her anything, either. The teen, having locked herself in her room since arriving two days ago (except for the occasional bathroom break), was laying fast asleep on her bed. It was Sunday afternoon, and it was extremely unlike Kagome to sleep in like this. Hitome silently entered the room with a tray of food, setting it surreptitiously on the bedside table before leaving completely unnoticed. It was true, she was worried, but she trusted her daughter, and merely prayed for her to return back to her normal self soon.
Peeking through half-shielded eyes, Kagome sat up upon confirming that her room was indeed empty. She half-heartedly ate some food, then sank back down, deep in thought. 'How could I have said those things? It's not like he hasn't been rude, stupid, stubborn, and arrogant before! Why did I say those things?! Or did I? I can't remember, and maybe I don't want to.. What day is
it again?' She glanced at the calendar on the wall. "It's Sunday, which means apparently I'm going to school tomorrow." 'Good, I need to catch up on my studies. Exams aren't too far off, it won't hurt to get back into a normal routine. I guess I should get to work on some of those math sheets sansei gave out for home...' At the last thought, the miko's eyes widened in panic. 'Oh no! Please tell me I didn't!' Kagome frantically jumped out of bed and started tearing her room apart looking for her yellow backpack, an item she barely left the house without. 'I left it there! How could I leave it there! I must've been half out of my mind! There's no way I can go back and get that now! Not to mention that the time it would take to get it and come back would leave me barely any time at all to do the actual work!! I finally get the chance to focus completely on my studies, and I don't have anything to actually STUDY!! How could I have----' Her rampant train of thoughts were ended when the doorbell rang throughout the abode. 'Oh no, who could that be? I hope it isn't Hojo, I'm really not in the mood for any of his "Get well soon" family remedies..' Sucking it up, she went down the staircase to find Souta trying to pull an enormous yellow bag through the door.
"Sis, what do you keep in this thing, bricks?" Panting furiously, he was more than glad when his big sister came and relieved him of his laborious chore.
"Souta, who brought this here?! Who was at the door?" Kagome was so excited to have her books back, she completely forgot about the fact that there was only one person who could bring it back.
"I dunno, there wasn't anyone here when I got to the door, just the backpack." Glancing around the front porch, the young boy noticed something white. "What's this, Kagome?"
Looking up from rummaging through her bag, she saw what he was referring to. She quickly walked over to the door and picked up the note laying on the ground. It only had three words scrawled onto it, but three words that made her stomach churn and her heart skip a beat as she realized who had obviously brought her her things.
You left this.
"Thank you, Souta, for trying to bring my bag inside. I'm going back upstairs now to study, okay?" She mumbled, crumpling the note in her hand.
"Okay, sis, it was nice to hear you talking again, though." Skipping off to do whatever it was he did with his free time, Kagome slowly made her way back to her bedroom to work on those stupid math problems, albeit her mind was somewhere else, a billion miles away from trigonometry...
'He was here, and he didn't even bother to try to talk me into coming back to help search for the jewel shards...' A few tears began to gather and pool in her eyes, but she hastily blinked them away. 'So if the sine is the opposite over the hypotenuse, then the cosine must be the adjacent over.......'
````````````````````````````````````````````````` ``
A few hours later, a completely brain-dead Kagome crumpled onto her bed. 'Whew, I can't believe I'm finally done! Whoever came up with trigonometry doesn't deserve to be called human. It's more like a punishment than something useful that I'll actually need in life. I mean, seriously, who do they think they're kidding!? It's just a jumble of numbers teachers pretend mean something, and we're expected to memorize it? Psht, yeah, right, more like fall over dead from a brain aneurism...' Her thoughts dwindled as sleep overtook her slowly. 'Oh well, at least I got all my work done. Now all I have to do is sleep and wait for morning to come... Maybe if I ask the teacher to explain it for me.. or even get a tutor... this stuff might actually start making sense.....' Slowly, her eyelids slid closed for the last time that day.
-----------
Hitome knocked on Kagome's bedroom door. "Kagome, sweetheart, dinner's ready. Are you feeling good enough to come down and eat or do you want me to bring it up to you, again? Kagome?"
She cautiously opened the door, curious about the lack of response. What she found was an utterly exhausted Kagome passed out haphazardly among the rumpled sheets and pillows. Chuckling silently to herself and the things Kagome would do for her schoolwork, she came in and quickly straightened things out. Putting all of her papers together in a nice, neat stack, she placed her backpack next to them, so Kagome wouldn't accidently walk out the door without them. Once the desk was straightened, and Kagome's textbooks were put away, Hitome moved on to the girl herself. Pulling the covers out from under her, the mom fixed her daughter comfortably onto the bed and pillows, which were back at the headboard where they belonged. Then she replaced the blankets and sheets over the sleeping figure, who must've been really tired, seeing as she hadn't moved voluntarily or even made a noise this entire time. Glancing around the room, satisfied with her work, Mrs. Higurashi placed a chaste kiss on her overworked daughter's forehead.
"Sweet dreams, Kagome." Walking back towards the door, she stopped halfway through it. She turned around with a knowing smile on her face. "He'll be back. Eventually." With that being said, she went downstairs to the impatient men waiting to be fed. 'Impatient boys.' She corrected herself, a playful smile on her face. She loved her family.
Upstairs, Kagome relaxed, unnoticed pent-up tension fleeing her body, and finally drifted into the first peaceful sleep she had had in a long while.
*************************************************
Sango, Miroku, and Shippo arrived back at the familiar hut and sank to the floor. Just as the mental berating started in the three friends' minds, an old priestess walked through the entrance. Noticing the looks of defeat and worry on the youngsters faces, she assumed that they had not found anything new.
"Don't ye worry yeself, now. I'm sure that wherever Inuyasha and Kagome may be, they're very
safe. Have ye ever known him to let harm befall the girl and not do something about it? And I have no doubts in my mind that the boy, too, is quite alright. Just give them some time. They'll be back."
Reassured by Kaede's comforting words, they gathered around to help the old woman make supper. Shippo was especially excited, because Kaede was making his favorite. Sango and Miroku laughed and the kitsune's hyperness. Only Kaede was faking the momentary joy everyone was feeling for now. 'I only hope that I was right...'
``````````````````````````````````````````
Inuyasha peeked through the opening. 'Nope, no one in sight. They must be asleep..' "Good, I'll just grab my stuff and be on my way then. I wonder how long it'll be before I see this old place again.." With the Tetsusaiga in hand, Inuyasha walked out the door for the last time, ever.
------------------------
A couple of minutes later, Shippo crept out of the shadowy recesses of the hut, miniature pools of salty water shining in his eyes. 'First Kagome left me, and now Inuyasha, too?' Wiping his face with his little sleeves, he crawled over to Kirara and snuggled up against her comforting form. 'Maybe he's just going to get Kagome... yeah! That must be it!' Relieved, he drifted off into a peaceful and relaxing sleep. If only he knew.......
****************************************************** ************
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" The highschooler jumped ten feet at the sight before her. Kids rushed toward the scene from all over the campus, some curious, others worried, while some were being pulled forcefully by their intrigued friends. "OH MY GOD!" Even when the crowd starting forming four or five people thick around her, Kagome Higurashi continued to flip out.
"Kagome!! Are you okay?!" Three very concerned looking girls came running to her. Yuka, the one who had yelled, reached her first, quickly followed by Eri and Ayumi. After catching their breath as they madly searched the area with their eyes, the concern and worry on their faces changed to that of confusion and worry. "Um, Kagome? There's nothing here..." Yuka finally managed to state the obvious. 'Don't tell me Kagome's actually cracked. Her physical illnesses finally went away only to be replaced by mental ones? Poor Kagome..'
Kagome turned her head to stare at her friends like they were crazy. "What do you mean there's noth..." Turning back mid-sentence, her sentence ended abruptly. 'There's no way. I couldn't have been imagining it! I know what I saw! Well.. I think I do.' "Bu-But... It was there.. I know it was...." she finished meekly.
Now it was Ayumi's turn to speak, "What was, Kagome?" She never doubted her friend. If her friend saw something, then darnit it was there! Her face giving away her full attentiveness, she
watched as her best friend opened her mouth to speak, hesitate, then close it back, as if changing her mind.
"It was nothing, I think I was just daydreaming. Haha, you know me. Head always in the clouds. Ha! Well, if you guys will excuse me, I think I'm gonna go home now. Bye!" And without a backwards glance, she was halfway down the road on her bike.
Stunned at Kagome's sudden change in mood and the fact that they hadn't been able to squeeze in one word during her short but conclusive monologue, the girls just shrugged it off. Besides, it wasn't like this was something new.
---
Kagome raced down the road on her bike. She had successfully (even if barely) graduated middle school, seeing as she had been able to get some real studying in towards the end. She was now a couple of weeks into highschool. Her life had pretty much gone back to normal since she came back for good about six months ago. The only thing out of the ordinary were the few shards of a jewel she always kept hanging around her neck. Nobody questioned her about it. To them, it was just another tacky necklace, but she knew better. Kagome never really talked about where it came from, or even who had given it to her. And after a while, Eri and them had even stopped questioning her about her "badass, two-timing boyfriend". And she had stopped thinking about him... or at least, until about five minutes ago. But it hadn't been Inuyasha she had seen. No, if her vision wasn't failing her, it was definitely much, much worse. Unconsciously, her hand wandered up to clutch her necklace as she turned the corner onto her street.
'It couldn't be. There's no possible way...'
He had dozed off under a tree when it happened. Opening his eyes, suddenly wide awake, he recognized the scent. "Shit!" And with that being said, he was off, hopefully not too late.
