Chapter 03: The finding
Well, things are busy at home so I'll be updating in a few days. I hope you have liked it so far. I've drawn Inuko already and I'm doing some sketches for some pics. Hopefully I'll have them on the wire soon if I can get my fucking scanner to get working again. I've thought so much about this fanfic that I've go it all figured up until the middle, wherever that will end up being but I still have some strands loose so if anyone feels like giving ideas, feel free to do it.
Disclaimer: I do no own Inuyasha, nor Kagome, nor my lord Seshoumarou…*sigh*
Inuyasha was crouched with a piece of white cloth firmly grabbed in his hand when the party arrived. Shippo caught the distinct scent so similar to Inuyasha's own when he parched onto his shoulder.
The hanyou seemed deep in thought and wouldn't answer his calls. Finally he yanked his hair causing him to stir and smash him with one hand.
“Quit bothering, runt, this is serious business” he moved close to Kagome and leaning a bit signaled her to mount on him “This is gonna get nasty, Kagome, be prepared.”
“What happened? What are this dead youkai?”
“They were interposing between this and me” he handed her the cloth. Kagome felt a rush of energy but it was dissipating already when she tried to read it.
“That?” Sango eyed the piece of silk doubtly.
“It has Inuyasha's smell on it” supplied Shippo.
“How can that be?” Kagome shook her head at the taiji-ya that stared at her in the same awkward fashion.
“I don't know! But I know that smell! It's family's blood!”
“But you and your brother are the only survivors of your father's blood”
“Yes, my father's…” he broke off letting the sentence unresolved `But there was my uncle's family. I thought them dead, if they are not…' the thought stirred something deep within of him that brought the forgotten sensation of having a pack.
Inuyasha kept following the tiny orb that seemed to know exactly where they were heading. His instincts pushed him at his full speed telling him to hurry. He feared that if there was indeed someone that belonged to that family, by the state of the kimono, it would already be too late. Those horrid snake-like youkai had been following that same scent, though he didn't know why.
He paused until he relocated the shining sky-blue light pulsing around the little object.
It was leading him to the river, he could smell the water that fell through the cascade and created a dense cloud of vapor. He crouched, letting Kagome down.
“Inuyasha, there's strong magic here” Kagome said with a very low voice.
“I now” somehow he didn't seemed to feel the least menaced by its presence. He even felt his muscles relaxing at the familiar sensation.
Following his senses he forgot about the orb and jumped from rock to rock until he finally saw a bundle of something white that was laying a top a rock at the base of the cascade. It took him no effort to jump there to find at last, what it was.
He sniffed; indeed this was some inu-youkai, a young female inu-youkai. He uncovered the still form and gasped.
There lay breathing hard a female youkai that looked hanyou, like him. He bent on his knees at her side, touching her front; she was very hot, as if she had a fever. He sniffed, he knew this scent, but she couldn't be…
“Inuyasha-onii-chan...”she panted. Her emerald eyes met his golden stare and she finally collapsed into unconsciousness.
“Inuko-chan... Inuko-chan!!” he growled hard. She was sick and she needed help. He didn't know how had she gotten into this poor state but he had to get her healthy. He scooped the light form as if she weighted nothing.
“Don't worry, I'm right here. I won't let anything happen to you, I promise”
She stirred and snuggled close to him, grasping his haori tightly and shivering all over.
“Inuyasha!” the scream from Kagome had him turning in time to see the huge transformation that had overtook the orb while he was attending to Inuko. A large dragon had emerged and planted itself upon the water.
“You are Inuko-sama's cousin, Inuyasha, the son of the Inu-daiyoukai”
“Yes, I am” he prepared to get the sword but the dragon only nodded.
“I, Namida, am at your service, for protecting my lady”
Inuyasha was taken aback at this, but he recovered quickly. “Take us to the village then” the dragon complied and lowered himself down to allow him to jump easily. When they passed around Kagome he grabbed her by the arm and junked her upward to a sitting position by his side.
“Inuyasha, who is that?” she couldn't refrain form asking.
“She is Inuko, my cousin…” he was visibly shocked by the founding of the female youkai. She saw how the muscles on his jaw had tightened. The girl was in a very bad state, she was really pale, her skin almost translucent only her cheeks colored by the fever.
“Se-“the girl tried to call someone but a shiver cut her words. Kagome wondered whom might she be calling. She was pretty and resembled Inuyasha a lot. She had white hair, but hers was not silvery it had some blond strands. Her ears were like Inuyasha's, `So she must be a hanyou, and not a youkai. But she doesn't feel like Inuyasha, her youki is different'
The girl moved and trashed around as if trying to get free of Inuyasha's arms. `She might be having a nightmare' Inuyasha cuddled her close to his chest and mumbled some soft strange words that sounded more like woofs and growls to Kagome. It seemed to calm her down, however. Her kimono was stained and had some bad cuts but she seemed unharmed, at least there were no visible wounds from her point of view. At a fair distance, Kirara came into their sight. Kagome waved to get them to get closer.
Sango's face was the expression of puzzlement at the sight of Inuyasha's cargo and at their means of transportation.
“Is she..?” Miroku's question was never answered because the village came into view and Inuyasha snarled “Hurry up, dammit!” causing the dragon to move even at a more rapid peace. At a considerable height Inuyasha jumped taking Kagome with him while he supported Inuko's weight with only one arm.
“Kade-babaa!!” Inuyasha's shout woke her rapidly and she found herself facing a huge dragon that landed on the path to her hut and dissolved into vapor. Inuyasha ran past her followed close by a very worried Kagome.
“Don't hesitate, babaa, I need your healing abilities”
“She's burning…” scowled Kagome touching the young girl's temple.
“Hurry, we'll need blankets, hot water and some towels” directed the hanyou pacing up and down until finally placing Inuko under the mat and covering her with a few blankets that were there.
“Inuyasha, I'll go heat some water” recoiled Kagome leaving him alone in the room.
He nodded absentmindedly as she went outside to fill the pot she would put on the fire. He couldn't believe he was holding his little cousin in his arms. She had survived, though he couldn't see how, and that was what mattered. He remembered how she had always been a very delicate child as a pup. She didn't have the strength that even he as a hanyou had, and she was a youkai, even if she had the ears. He had never understood that. She smelled different too, more mature, more inu-youkai than before. Her scent mingled with his one and her youki sought his to hold for balance. He felt the pull of her aura around him and how she recognized him as family. She had gotten calmer when Kaede had gone from the room but he had felt no difference when Kagome had. He felt happy at this distinction of Kagome being `family' too.
Sango came into the door and lit a fire to place the pot on to. She had it burning nicely in a few seconds.
“Sango, leave the room. Tell Kagome only she can come in” the rude tone didn't amuse the exterminator but she did as she was told.
Kagome heard this and her perplexed stare told the taiji-ya that she didn't know either what this was about. She crawled to Inuyasha's side with a whole bunch of blankets.
“She'll be fine very soon” prognosticated Inuyasha.
“How can you tell?”
“It's only a fever. Youkai don't get it that strong” he scowled with a knowing grin. But he would prove terribly wrong as the sickness that afflicted Inuko kept her in bed with fever for three days. Kagome took charge when Inuyasha needed some rest but it was mainly him who stood by the side of the bed.
He didn't talk much now; Kagome could tell he was visibly worried about this girl. She was very curious but she was afraid of upsetting him if she started doing questions in a critic moment like this.
At the third day, Inuko finally opened her eyes. They searched for Inuyasha only to find a human girl by her side.
“Inu-onii-chan!” she panicked trying to stand but Kagome stopped her.
“Calm down, he went to get more water. It's ok” The young girl sniffed the air.
“You're my cousin's mate!!”
“Yes, I'm Kagome” it bothered her that youkai caught it so easily as if it was branded upon her temple.
“You are human, and a miko” she looked deep into her eyes “and you are pretty” the quick resume made Kagome gasp.
“I..errr..thanks..”
“I like you!” said the youkai grabbing her hand and then closing her eyes like a child. `She dosed off as easily as a baby' Kagome thought. It was a surprisingly easy way to be accepted into Inuyasha's family, Kagome smiled to herself. This girl seemed childish but something in her told Kagome not to sub estimate her.
When Inuyasha came back she told him that Inuko had come around the fever.
`It took her forever' he scowled; no youkai had this sort of fever's he knew that for sure.
“Now tell me Inuyasha, who is she?” at last Kagome would get some answers. Inuyasha sat next to her and told her quietly not to wake Inuko…
“My father had a brother, a great inu-youkai called Yaemon, he was a very skilled swordsman. He spent great amounts of time at my home because he fancied Seshoumaru a lot. They were really close. Seshoumaru learned from him his marvelous control and the art of the swords.”
“Did you get to know him?”
“Yes, I did. But I was only a pup. He met a friend of my mother one of the times he came home, a beautiful hanyou, and fell in love with her at first sight. But there were some problems, since she was the powerful heir of the neko-youkai clan, even if she was a hanyou. She was called Takara, which mean treasure. She was a powerful miko, because her mother had been a human miko with great abilities. So she not only was a neko-hanyou but a miko too. My father's advisors were against her but he nondeless gave permission for her mating with Yaemon. He had this notion that love could not met a barrier of any kind, it didn't mattered if it included crossing blood lines with humans. He supported his brother fully. And Yaemon was his most loyal servant.
They had a baby. That was not hanyou, or youkai but smelled like a youkai while looking hanyou. She was called Inuko. But hey had a problem with this baby, due to the mixture of bloods in her, the miko powers had closed off a great amount of her strength away so she was weakened and had to be treated with lots of cares. They thought that with her maturing her youkai blood this would change, tough it seems it has not.”
“That's so sad…But at least she had a family that stood for her, didn't she?”
“Her family was murdered. Yaemon stood protecting my mother from the huge group of youkai that kept attacking her until he perished. Takara died in the same way, buying some time for my mother, Seshoumaru and I to escape… a bit after my own mother died at the hands of the youkai that had swore loyalty to my father securing my safety with her own life. I thought Inuko dead. I would have looked for her until the ends of the world if I had only known. I still don't see how she survived.”
“Maybe she'll give you some answer after she awakes”
“Yes, I hope she will.” they didn't had much time anyway….
