Chapter 1:
Happenstance?
************************************************** ******

She couldn’t see. But that was normal. She never could see. At least like she new other people could see. Vibrant colors and solid shapes on display for their eyes, yet not hers’. The way she saw things was different. Her storm gray iris’ had no pupils. It often creped people out if they could see her strange eyes, so she wore sun glasses most of the time. She saw by feeling vibrations, and seeing vibrations. She liked to think of it as her Daredevil and Spidy sense. If she concentrated she could feel where any thing was. If she used her walking stick to tap things she could kind of see their shape. She could see colors… at least what she thought where colors. She gave them names herself.

Like her mother…her mother Hitomi, made what she thought of as a light blue vibration with a core of pink. Some times with little lavender streaks. She was easy to see as she was always moving around doing something, be it cooking, cleaning, or other house hold chores. Her little brother Souta on the other hand was violet most of the time with a core of white and little swirls of vermilion. One of the only other people she spent a lot of time with was her grand father. She never knew his real given name, she normally called him Jii-chan. He was always a calming vibration… unless he thought something was filled with evil. Which was about every youkai or hanyou in the vicinity…or his vicinity. Pretty much all of them knew that he couldn’t hurt them with his sutras’, but it was always funny to listen to him shouting ‘Evil be gone!’

Jii-chan had a small core of gold, surrounded by light blue. Unless, of course, he was chasing some one with his afore mentioned sutras. Then that gold was almost engulfed by green, infused with shades of that same green, just in their light and dark aspects. They lived in an ancient shrine. She knew it was a special place because of their tree. The Goshinboku. Some times when she had trouble sleeping at night she would sneak out of the house and climb up into it’s branches and almost immediately she would fall asleep. It was the only thing that always had a constant vibration. It was a large solid core of gold. It sparkled constantly to her. If she ever got lost, all she had to do was turn in a circle until she could see that gold strip of power and then she would know. Home was that way.

Her grandfather liked to call her the Shrine Priestess, or The Miko of the Goshinboku. Or to shorten it for people who came to the shrine often, it was just The Miko. Today was her day to clean the court yard in front of the Goshinboku, mainly sweeping up the leafs. Then later, her favorite part of living at the shrine (besides Goshinboku), She would get to put on a performance that they did here once a month. She liked doing it for the freedom she felt while moving in steps she supposed to others’ looked complicated. She swept the leafs slowly and was thinking to herself when she felt a new presence on the shrine grounds. One that had never been there before.

It was probably just some who had heard of the show and had just arrived early…way early. She decided to just keep sweeping and if the person had any questions, they’d come ask, right? Silently she concentrated on this new vibration. She couldn’t tell if it was male or female. Their core was a think silver with veins of the palest light blue. She sighed mentally and couldn’t help but fight the urge to make this person happy. She was drawn to their silver sadness. ‘I wonder what happened to this pour soul?’ She thought to her self. The person walked determinedly closer to her. ‘Here we go…question time!’

“Excuse me Miko-san. Is this the Shrine of the Goshinboku?” She heard asked in a cold, collected, masculine tone. Kagome bowed to him. She didn’t have her shades on and didn’t want to freak him out with her eyes, so she kept her head bent just right so that her eyes couldn’t be seen.

“Yes Sir, This is the Goshinboku Shrine. Can I help you with any thing?” She asked so softly she didn’t think he would hear her.

“I was told there was a performance worth seeing here. Done by the shrines Miko. I just wanted to make sure I found the right place.” His tone still not changing.

“You’ve come to the right place. The show won’t happen for a few hours yet, as it’s done at sun set. Demo, you’re more then welcome to stay until then. Would you like a tour?” She asked him in hopes that he would say yes.

“Is the Miko available to do a tour?” He asked.

“I’m afraid not, she doesn’t show until the actual performance. I apologize. If you don’t mind Kagome giving you a tour of the grounds, I wouldn’t mind assisting you.” She asked with a smile on her face, referring to herself in the third person for a moment.

“Kagome…” She heard him whisper to himself. “Very well.”

Kagome nodded and turned to the Goshinboku. “This is the tree the shrine was named after. The Goshinboku. Or if you prefer, the God Tree. It’s said to be one of the most spiritual places in Japan. People come from all over the world to sit in it’s shade and wish that some thing magical will happen while they are there. Or to pray here, that their prayers will reach Kami backed by the spiritual force of the tree.”

“And does anything magical happen? Are miracles performed by the Kami?” He asked amusement lacing his tone.

“Maybe.” She answered with a whimsical tone. “Come.” She said and grabbed for his hand where she thought it should be. Her hand made contact with the cool hard flesh of a hand that belonged to some one who used weapons…or practiced with them on an almost daily bases. She pulled him to the tree, making sure she didn’t trip on the low fence around it, it’s purpose to keep tourist away from the tree. Gently, she placed his hand on it’s bark, covered with her own. “Do you feel it?” She whispered.

She could feel him nodding and when he spoke it almost startled her. “What is it?”

“It’s the power of the Goshinboku…it’s what makes this place so special. It’s almost like the heart of the world. Each year it’s roots dig deeper and deeper into the earth. Some say this tree is even connected with time. It will always be here. In fact, the ceremony that will be preformed today is in honor of this tree. Once every cycle, we do the sacred ceremony to encourage growth and good health for it.”

As she was speaking her hand would tighten on his occasionally. Kagome was completely startled when she felt his other hand tuck under her chin and lift her face up for his inspection. She could feel his confusion and see how his silver core was surrounded in mottled colors shot through with streaks of teal. As he stared, he said nothing to her. As the minutes wore on she became uncomfortable. In the blink of an eye she jerked her chin from his grasp and fled from his presence gracefully.

Only not as gracefully as she thought she did. Kagome, in her haste, ran into the small rope fence and went hurtling to the ground in what would be a very painful impact with the ground. But her face didn’t meet the dirt she was expecting. Instead strong arms where wrapped around her waist holding her to a hard muscled chest. She immediately stiffened at the contact and tried to jump away as soon as she was righted. But the arms just tightened around her for a moment and she was over come with an intense jolt of fear. Not being able to help her self, she instinctively pulled upon her Miko powers and let a short blast leave her body.

She cringed at the sound of pain that came from behind her and didn’t stop to think as she sprinted off in the direction of the shrine, making her way into her room. She closed the shoji door behind herself and slid down to the floor in front of it, clutching her hand above her heart. ’He must have been at least part youkai in order for my powers to hurt him that way…Why did I freak out so much, he probably just wanted to help me when I tripped. But why did he look at me for so long and not say anything?’

Shaking her head at herself, she stood once more and walked towards her closet to get her ceremonial garb out. She laid it gently across her bed and sat down in the middle of her room to start her meditations to help prepare for the coming show. She didn’t want to be filled with fear and doubt while she performed…it would just ruin the whole intent of the ceremony.

An hour and a more calm Kagome later, she stood once more and slowly made her way to her bedside, humming to herself as she slid into her costume. From the description her mother gave her, she knew what it looked like. It was about as far from a traditional Miko’s outfit that you could get. The top was a fitted halter that was a deep crimson red. It had a two inch collar and was fitted for her chest and ended about an inch and a half below her breasts. It had red stitched ivy vines all over it in the same shade as the silk the top was made of.

The bottoms started at her hips with a matching red sash that wound down at an angle making a slight V shape, the bottom of the v coming to rest just above her privets. And from this sash, an ivory white silk skirt flowed to just below her knees with one slit going up her right thigh. On her right arm was an ivory white fingerless glove that came up to just before her elbow. And on her left she had a crimson wrist band, again with the stitched ivy vines. Her hair she left free, to do what it was wont to do. Her feet where unadorned and small silver bangle bracelets graced her ankles, three on one side and two on the other.

Kagome heard a knock at her door and her mothers voice came thru to her.

“Kagome hunny… it’s almost time…do you want any tea before hand?” Kagome smiled to her self and walked slowly towards her door, managing to not trip on her discarded white Haroi and Hakama that was her every day shrine work outfit. She pulled open the shoji and turned her smile to her mother.

“Tea would be wonderful Ka-san.” She said and reached for her mothers hand. Going down the stairs was always harder then going up them, so her mother generally would help her down them so she wouldn’t trip. They made their way into the kitchen and kneeled down at the table, the ends of Kagomes’ dark hair touching the ground when she sat. Hitomi reached across the table and place Kagomes’ hand on her tea cup so she would know where it was. Kagome sighed and brought the fragrant tea up to her mouth to take a soothing sip.

Kagome got the feeling that her mother wanted to ask her something, but was refraining, just in case what she was going to ask would cause upset before the ceremony. “Ka-san? When you used to do this, would Ba-chan make you tea right before you went out there?” She asked with a spark of curiosity in her storm gray orbs.

Kagome could feel her mother nod. “Yes, it was always her special tea to help calm my nerves before a performance. Because no matter how much I meditated, I would still get butterflies in my tummy before hand.” Kagome giggled at her mother and took the last sip of her tea.

“All right… I’m ready! Is it time?” She asked, excitement evident in her voice.

“Yes it’s time.” Hitomi said as she got up from the table.

“Can you see Sango out there? Or Miroku?” Kagome asked as she to got up from the table.

“Yes dear, they are right in the front row. And little Shippou from across the road is there, as are most of the people who come here every month. There are a few new faces, but that’s to be expected, tourists and all you know.” Her mother rambled on as they walked to the main part of the shrine so she could leave the building out of the front of the shrine instead of the side entrance the family normally used. She stood silently at the top of the short flight of stone steps took a deep breath and descended as gracefully as she could with out her mothers help.

She could already hear the whispers, but decided to block them out like always so she could concentrate. She smiled to her self and walked straight to a stone that was set up a few yards way from the back of the audience. She gained speed the closer she got to it and used it as a spring board to launch herself over the top of the people gathered with a jangle, only to land neatly on one of the pegs that was used to hold up the rope fence in front of the Goshinboku.

She heard the collective gasp and her internal smile brightened. She was balancing on one foot on said peg as she started the ceremony. There where no formal introductions, she just started to hum a pure note that wasn’t too high and wasn’t too low. The sound was as though it was made from some sort of flute. Slowly she raised her gloved right hand into the air, as if she were reaching for the Kami of the sky. Gradually a sacred arrow faded into existence in her upraised hand.

This arrow was wooden and had no metal tip, but was rounded instead. It was still fletched with a feather at the end, and the middle had a few ribbons to adorn it as well as a charm that was a silver eight sided star inside a circle, and at the middle of the star was a small S. When this appeared she heard yet another intake of breath, from a few less people this time.

Then, as though directed by the slight wind, she began to move… drawing sigils in the air with her sacred arrow, floating from peg to peg. Her hum also changed. There still was her constant mid note, but also there seemed to be a second higher note woven with it that had an intermittent, mischievous pattern. The breeze picked up and played with the branches of the Goshinboku and it sounded almost as if it was trying to sing with her. Leafs where startled from their perches as the wind danced through the boughs.
To the amazement of the new comers in the crowed, the Miko floated from one of the pegs and made a temporary perch on a falling leaf. Her song became louder as she danced from leaf to leaf and the ones she didn’t use as a step seemed to want to touch her any way, and would find a way to brush against her bare skin. Again her hum changed. This time on a deeper low note that was a steady beat, almost like a heart. And as she did so, dust and small pebbles from the ground underneath her rose into the air playing with the leafs and the swirling air currents.

Her ivory skirt twirled around her calves as she danced and she new the crowed could see more of her limbs than she was comfortable with, though there was nothing she could do about that but blush. She then added yet another note to her song that was between her higher one and her mid note, this one slightly passionate, and a small flame seemed to jump from the tip of her sacred arrow and joined it’s brother and sister elements in their dance. Occasionally making bits of dust sparkle as they swirled around her and the tree, and caressing her flesh much the same way that the leaves had… and not leaving any marks behind.

For her last note, she added a thrum in between her mid note and the deeper one of the earth that was long and calming like a smoothly coursing river. Accompanying this one, rain drops fell from the sky, seemingly only there in the courtyard. Mingling with it’s brethren and in a final flash the fire, dirt, water and air clashed together one last time. As the wind clamed and the rain stopped, sparkling shards of what looked like diamonds fell slowly in time with the Miko to the ground at the base of the Goshinboku.

Kagome let out a sigh as she listened to the applause and let her smile actually manifest on her face instead of only in her mind. She heard the squeal of children and automatically opened her arms as she was bull dozed by four small warm bodies. Each of them had a core of white similar to her brothers. “Kagome-nee-chan Kagome-nee-chan!” they all chattered at the same time. “That was so pretty!” “Will you teach me to jump like that?” “How did you make that neat stick appear?” “Can I be a Miko too?”

Kagome was slightly confused at all the questions, and didn’t know what ones to answer first. So instead, with her remaining energy, she initiated a tickle war with them. Soon each child was picked up by their parent as they got ready to leave, until it was just her and Shippou, and the various others who stayed to wonder around the shrine and speak with her mother and jii-chan.

Shippou lived across the street at the orphanage and they usually allowed him to come here once and a while to help out, and to see the monthly performance. He was a brightness in her world. He help her when ever he could, and he didn’t seem to be creped out by her eyes.

“You did really good today Kagome-nee-chan. The tree feels extra happy to me.” He whispered confidentially to her. Kagome hugged him and looked up when she felt two people coming closer to them.
One vibration was a core of dark pink and had swaths of light purple and violet running through it. “Hey Sango, Did you like the show?” Kagome asked as she tucked a strand of her black hair behind the shell of her ear.

“I sure did Kagome-chan. There was this one guy that was watching you, his jaw was almost scraping the ground.” She said as she giggled.

Kagome looked at the other vibration, This one had a rather large core of gold, more so then her grandfathers. That was always laced with a deep red. When the red got deep enough, she always knew it would be followed by the echo of Sango’s hand meeting flesh.

“How ’bout you Miroku? Going to give up your Buddhist ways and join our Shinto shrine? You’d be the head priest…” She said trailing off as she noticed that the guy with the silver and light blue vibration was still on the grounds. “You guys going to stay for dinner today?” She asked looking back in their direction.

“I’m afraid we can not this time Kagome-sama. Sango-san has agreed to come to dinner with me this evening, just the two of us.” Miroku said and the little deep red trails on his gold core got slightly deeper. Kagome giggled and looked down at Shippou.

“And what about you Shippou?” She asked the small youkai.

He sighed and she could feel him shaking his head, “No, I can’t they wont let me today, we are getting a new kid, and I’ve gotta show her around. I actually gotta go now or I’m going to get in trouble.” He said as he detangled himself from her lap. “But I can come visit tomorrow…I could bring her to meet you if she’s cool.” He stated. Kagome nodded and smiled at him.

“Well, Shippou, if you want Lady Sango and I could walk you across the street?” Miroku asked the little kit. Shippou said okay and jumped up into the monks arms.

“I’ll call you later okay Kagome-chan?” Sango asked they walked away.

“Okay Sango-chan! Talk to you later!” She called as the left the grounds. Almost immediately Kagome felt a wind rush in her direction and before she knew it her hands where taken up in a rough, yet gentle grip. Before her was a vibration that was a core of bright blue, shot through with currents of pale vermilion and violet.

“The moment I saw you, loves’ arrow struck me and I knew that I must make you my woman. Please make me the happiest youkai in the world, and consent to be mine!” He stated more the asked, in a gush of rushed words.

“I’m sorry… I don’t even know who you are-” Only to be interrupted by him again.

“How rude of me. I’m lord Kouga of the East, of the youkai Oookami tribe. I came because a month ago I was told by a member of my clan , Hakkaku, and his brother Ginta… that I should come and see this ceremony. I was unsure why at first they would want me to come into the western lands, but now I know that it was fated to be…so we could meet, and I could make you my woman. Now enough of this yammering. Let us go back to my lands!” He said as he pulled her to her feet.

“Kouga-kun… I don’t even know you. You can’t just take me away from my home and every thing I know, and expect me to be happy. Please let me go.” She asked with a small amount of force behind her words as she extracted her hands from his death grip.

She could feel him lower his head for a moment a his core became riddled with silver spots for a moment, only to have them vanish as he brought his head back up. “You’re right. I need to go back to my lands and make arrangements to bring you there. My home at this time is not fit for you My Woman. But I will go for now to make things ready for you! Ja Ne! He yelled enthusiastically as he sped off with the wind.

Kagome closed her eyes and sighed, ‘What a day!’ She thought to her self as she relaxed a bit, only to have her legs give out from the amount of energy she had expended. Fully expecting to get a sore bottom from hitting the ground, she was extremely shocked when slightly familiar arms wrapped around her waist to keep her up right.

This time she didn’t bolt. She took a deep breath and braced herself mentally. Then in a cold voice she hoped matched the one she heard him use earlier, “What do you want?”

“I only wanted to keep you from falling Miko-sama.” the cold voice said, with a huskiness that wasn’t there before, into the shell of her ear. Kagome shivered as a tingle instigated by that voice skittered down her spine.

“Well… you have done so. Now let me go.” She stated. She felt his arms tighten around her once more and felt as he drew in a breath near her neck. He slowly pulled his arms from around her waist, running his claws over the flesh of her stomach as he did so. Kagome held in a moan that threatened as he did so then turned to face him, her head no longer bowed but looking directly at him with her stormy eyes. She raised her eye brow in question.

“I wanted to apologize for earlier Miko-sama, if I was rude in any way. This Sesshoumaru did not mean to make you run from me as you did.” He said to her so quietly she almost missed when he said his name. ’Sesshoumaru…’ She thought to herself feeling something feathering on the edge of her consciousness.

“It’s alright… I’m used to people staring at me. This time was no different, I should not have reacted the way I did.” She said looking down at her feet so he couldn’t see her face. For the second time that day she was startled as he tucked his hand under her chin and brought her face back up towards his. “There is no need for you to regret your actions Miko-sama. When this Sesshoumaru gazed upon your face, I was speechless. All I wanted to do was this.” Kagome heard him whisper as she felt his face come closer to hers. All she had time to do was blush as his lips grazed softly across hers.

She felt heat shoot across her body and some how felt the coolness of the Goshinboku at her back. She brought her hands up to his toned chest and made to push him away, but her body betrayed her and she slid her hands up into his thick, silky hair, and exerted more pressure on his warm lips. She tilted her head to give him better access and gasped in surprise as some thing hot and wet ran across her bottom lip, giving him entrance into the recesses of her mouth. She groaned in the back of her throat when his tongue tangled with hers.

She felt the bark of the Goshinboku bite into her flesh and that brought her back to reality. She pulled her mouth from his and panting, let her head fall back against the tree. Kagome felt him tuck her face against her neck and jumped a little when she felt him lick the juncture of her neck and shoulder. “Gomen Miko-sama…oni gai, forgive me. I could not help my self.” He whispered again into her ear.

“Please don’t call me that. My name is Kagome…” She said in a wavering voice as she ran a finger along his cheek, unknowingly tracing a blue line that was there.

“I must take my leave.” He said as he pulled reluctantly away from her, taking the hand that traced his stripe into his own, he brought it up to his lips and brushed a kiss across her knuckles and then was gone.

‘This was the strangest day I’ve ever had.’ She thought to her self as she sank to the ground at the base of the Goshinboku and wrapped her arms around it as best she could. She smiled when it felt as though the tree was hugging her back…
