Chapter 7
Time to Face the Kitsune
Shippou had been unusually quiet and sedate during their meal. Kagome wondered nervously when he was going to start asking questions. He was never good at keeping his curiosity at bay for long. It was strange he had not launched in to a bunch of embarrassing questions as soon as they had sat down to eat. Inu-Yasha seemed unconcerned, but then he always chose to ignore things when he could, until they hit him in the face.
When the meal was over, Kagome and Kaede told Sango and Miroku to go, that they would clean up. Shippou sat petting Kirara instead of going out to play as he usually would. Kagome steeled herself for what she was sure she would hear from him now, but instead he got up and followed Inu-Yasha outside. Uh oh, bad move she thought.
Inu-Yasha was on the porch when he realized Shippou had followed him out. The child registered like an unwelcome irritation on the edges of his senses.
“Why haven't you gone to play with your little friends?” he growled, spinning around to look at him.
The kitsune had a petulant but determined look on his face. He stood up straight and stuck his little chin in the air.
“You would never hurt Kagome, would you Inu-Yasha?” he said, “because if you did, I don't care how much bigger and stronger you are then me, I'd hurt you back.”
“WHAT?” he yelled, “Why do think I would hurt Kagome?”
“Well, I just want to be sure that you love her, because I love her too, you know.”
Inu-Yasha's jaw dropped, his eyes opened wide. He was speechless. Shaking with anger, he went up to the child who flinched but did not run away. The only thing that stopped him from lashing out was the knowledge that Kagome would `sit' him until his back broke if he ever harmed the kitsune. Instead he grabbed his arm.
“Kagome!' he yelled, dragging Shippou after him into the house.
Oh, no, the shit's hit the fan, Kagome thought as she turned around to see an enraged Inu-Yasha and a frightened Shippou behind her.
“Whatever Shippou did I'm sure it's not worth yelling about,” she said, trying to sound calm and rational.
“Somebody has been putting some strange ideas in to this kid's head!” Inu-Yasha huffed, letting Shippou go.
The child ran over immediately to Kagome, and she hugged him to her side.
“What are you saying to provoke Inu-Yasha?” she asked him.
“It's just, today by the river…” he started and trailed off.
“Yes?” said Kagome encouragingly.
Inu-Yasha was shooting daggers at the child with his eyes. Shippou looked over at him fearfully.
“I'm not saying anymore unless he promises not to hurt me!”
Kagome gave Inu-Yasha a warning look.
“Don't worry, I can still use the `s' word on him.”
Inu-Yasha growled, crossing his arms and looking away.
“I was by the river and I saw Sesshomaru.” He said.
“Yes, you told us that Shippou,” she said patiently.
“Well, I spoke with him.” He said looking rather uncomfortable.
Kagome and Inu-Yasha exchanged meaningful glances.
“It's just-I wanted to know what you were doing in the river, and he was there, and I asked him, and he told me.” Shippou blurted out quickly.
Kagome's face turned a deep pink.
“What did you see us doing in the river?” said Inu-Yasha.
Kagome was grateful that Inu-Yasha had stepped in and asked that. He could be downright considerate when he wanted to.
“I-I didn't know and Sesshomaru said you were having sex because you loved each other.” He squeaked. “Do you love each other?”
Now it was Inu-Yasha who's face had turned red. He would not look up to see Shippou's earnest expression. I thought Kaede would be taking care of this for us, Inu-Yasha thought with discomfort. He wanted to go running out of there, but he couldn't leave Kagome to face this alone. It was as much -if not more-his fault as hers that they were in this awkward position. If he did not own up to his responsibility for this situation, Kagome would be hurt, or worse, mad.
“Yes, we do love each other Shippou.” Said Kagome.
Shippou looked up expectantly at Inu-Yasha, and he nodded.
“And sometimes we need privacy to express our love for each other.” She continued.
“Are you going to make a baby?” he asked. “'Cause Seshomaru said that sex makes babies.”
Inu-Yasha put his hand over his face and Kagome bowed her head until her long hair made a curtain around her own.
“We are not trying to make a baby right now Shippou,” she said with a sigh, “we are just sharing our love for each other.”
“Well, Sesshomaru made a baby with Sango, didn't he?” said Shippou.
“Okay, that's enough!” exploded Inu-Yasha. “That's all the answers you're going to get for now squirt, so get out of here and GO PLAY!”
“Eeeep!” chirped Shippou who dashed past the enraged hanyou and out the door.
Kagome groaned.
“Feh!” spat Inu-Yasha, “I'm glad that's over.”
Kagome responded with a derisive bark of laughter.
“Don't think we've heard the last of this yet, Inu-Yasha,” she said, walking over to him.
She put her arms around him and buried her face in his chest. At first he was confused by her actions, they had never shown affection where they could be discovered before. Then with a sigh he wrapped her in his arms and kissed her on the top of her head.
“Maybe Sango and Miroku can answer the rest of his questions.” He said.
“We should be so lucky,” she chuckled, “it was our indiscretion that caused this situation.”
Inu-Yasha grunted.
“Yes, but its Sango who's pregnant.” He said.
“How do we explain that Sango's baby wasn't conceived in love?” Kagome wondered worriedly.
“I don't know, Kagome. Ask the old bat, Kaede.”
He softened his rough words by smoothing her hair out of her face and kissing her on the forehead. She looked up at him and smiled at the rare expression of tenderness on his face.
The opening of the door suddenly interrupted their moment of intimacy. Inu-Yasha and Kagome broke apart as Sango and Miroku entered the house.
“Sorry, did we interrupt something?” Said Miroku.
Inu-Yasha scowled.
“No, it's fine,” said Kagome, “tell us, did you find out anything?”
“Well, we went to the tree,” said Sango, “and Sesshomaru appeared.”
“What did he say?” Said Kagome, unknowingly wringing her hands.
“Basically what you told me,” Sango said with a shrug, “but he hadn't been sure you gave me the message correctly.”
“Hmph!” snorted Kagome, then looked at Sango seriously.
“How are you Sango? I mean, after seeing him…again.”
Sango bit her lip and looked down at the floor. Miroku moved over to her side and took her hand, giving her a look of encouragement.
“It was hard, but I had Miroku there for support.” She said and smiled at the monk.
“Hah!” barked Inu-Yasha at Miroku, “So you got the balls to finally tell her?”
Kagome looked mystified.
“Does this mean what I think it does?” she said.
“Yes, Miroku and I are back together.” Said Sango. “At least, we're giving our relationship another try.”
“You better tell her about Shippou,” said Inu-Yasha meaningfully to Kagome.
“What about Shippou?” said Sango, quirking her eyebrows questioningly her way.
Miroku closed his eyes, sighed, and unconsciously held Sango's hand a little tighter. It had dawned on him that his reaction to the things Shippou had said earlier was more than just his dirty mind working.
“He may be asking you some rather embarrassing questions.” Kagome said
“Embarrassing! That's putting it lightly!” Said Inu-Yasha, and fled out the door.
Miroku and Sango looked shocked and not a little appalled by his remark and sudden departure.
“Let him go,” said Kagome with a sigh, “he's too embarrassed himself to stick around while I give you guys an explanation.”
It was easier for Kagome to explain to them about what had happened without going into too much detail. They got the gist of it. When she got to the part about Sango's pregnancy, the demon exterminator's face darkened. Kagome felt bad when she saw the expression on her face, but this was something they could not treat lightly.
“He's just a child,” sighed Sango, “I wish he didn't have to learn the difference's between making love and rape so soon, and at the same time.”
“Do you want me to talk to him?” Said Miroku.
“No, I'm the one who is pregnant. His answers should come from me.” She said.
A/N: *Pant, pant*. Can't write another word for this chapter, I need my muse back! Sorry to leave it like this, but when she returns things-I hope-will get better. Stick around if you're not too disappointed.
