A/N: This really ought to have been part of the last chapter, but I needed a break. So think of this as part of chapter 8. Hope it doesn't really suck without the fickle guidance of my muse.

Chapter 9

An Uncertain Time for Children Part II

Kagome was surprised when Sango returned without Shippou. The miserable look on the demon exterminators face made her give an involuntary exclamation of dismay.

“He got upset,” said Sango wearily, “I tried to be as gentle and precise as possible, but I think he thinks we are all out to confuse him.”

“So where is he now?” asked Kagome.

“He ran into the forest,” she said with a sigh, “I called and called, but he didn't come back.”

There was no reason to be mad at Sango, Kagome knew. They should have known this might happen. It was getting harder to travel and care for a child while they were moving into adulthood. As their relationships changed towards one another, their relation to Shippou stayed the same. He was just too young. This was the only family the orphaned kitsune had. Despite the drag he could be on their lives, Kagome did truly care for the child. Something would just have to be worked out.

At that moment Inu-Yasha and Miroku walked in. Seeing Sango look so miserable, Miroku put down his staff and came over to her.

“What happened?” He said, putting a hand on her shoulder.

“Sango went to have a talk with Shippou,” said Kagome, “he got upset and ran away. It wasn't her fault, he just needs time to try and understand.”

“Huh!” said Inu-Yasha, “you know you spoil that child, Kagome.”

“Inu-Yasha, don't you start with me now!” Said Kagome, her temper flaring. “What I need you to do is go find him.”

“Who, me?” Said Inu-Yasha.

“Yes, I'm still speaking to you.” She said.

“But..”

“No `buts,'” said Kagome, “you know there is no one else here who has your night vision and sense of smell. Do you really expect the rest of us will be able to track him as easily?”

Inu-Yasha growled low in his throat.

“Well there's no reason I should have to go alone,” he said, and grabbed Miroku by the back of his robe.

“Hey!” was the only word the monk managed to get out. He just had enough time to grab his staff as he was dragged out the door.

“Don't worry, they'll find him.” Said Kagome, sitting next to Sango and putting a comforting arm around her shoulders.

Inu-Yasha better find him, or he will be getting a lot of `sits,' Kagome thought.

A/N: Okay, think of this little bit as the end of chapter 8. I've decided it was a good place to end, because the next chapter looks like it will be long, my muse willing.
