A/N: My muse blew a gasket. You can never trust those muse mechanics! They tell you she's fixed, you use her for a story, then BLAM! (Sigh). Anybody got the phone number for Rent-A-Muse?
Chapter 11
Sesshomaru Did WHAT?
At nighttime the villagers of Kaede's village know to stay away from the forest. As darkness sets in, parents call their children inside. They admonish them never to play too close to the forest as night falls. Stories are told of the demons of the forest, and young children hear the whispered names of the centipede demon, and Yura of the Hair. So it came as no surprise that the streets and fields that bordered the forest were deserted when the strange group appeared at the edge of the village.
“I will go no further,” said Sesshomaru, “Jakken and I must leave tonight. I have been away too long from my other responsibilities.”
Miroku and Shippou did not want to meet the demons lords gaze as the still unconscious form of Inu-Yasha was lowered carefully to the ground. Both believed he was irritated with them for having had to come to their rescue this night. Knowing they may have not made it out of the forest alive without his help, they asked no questions about why he had done what he did. His actions were totally unexpected, but then again, Sesshomaru had always been an enigma to them. Bowing, they gave him thanks, and he was off in the air, Jakken at his side.
Wearily, they sat down next to Inu-Yasha's prone body. They were silent as they rested a moment, still reeling from the night's terrifying and perplexing experiences.
Shippou was feeling guilty as he looked at Inu-Yasha lying in front of him. He had almost died because of his impetuous behavior that night. He felt cowed by all that had happened, and the feelings that had led to his actions now seemed stupid. Sesshomaru was right, he had been behaving badly, and it would not continue.
“Shippou, I need you to go back to Kaede's house,” said Miroku, “I can't carry Inu-Yasha back by myself. Get someone to come back with you and help me.”
The kitsune jumped up and dashed off without need for further urging. It was time for him to make up for the mess he had caused. As he approached Kaede's the three women came pouring out of the house.
“What happened?” said Kagome, taking the child in a hug, “are you okay?”
“Yes, I'm fine,” he said, relief washing over him at the comfort of her arms, “but Inu-Yasha and Miroku are injured. I need help to bring them back.”
“Where are they?” said Sango, concerned. “They're not still in the forest, are they?”
“No,” said Shippou with a shake of his head, “we made it to the edge of the forest and the village.”
“I'll go get my things,” said Kaede, and went to retrieve bandages and other supplies they may need for the young men's injuries.
“How did you get them out if they were injured?” said Kagome, her brows knitting in a perplexed frown.
“Sesshomaru,” said Shippou softly, looking at the ground at their gasps of surprise.
“I'll explain later,” said Shippou, “let's go!”
He trotted off, and the girls huffed in exasperation and were off following him.
“Slow down child, I am not as young and fast as ye!” said Kaede, bringing up the rear.
As Miroku waited for help, he checked the hanyou to be sure he was all right. Inu-Yasha's face was pale, but his breathing seemed stronger. He adjusted his body so that he lay more comfortably, pulling his long silver hair from under his back and laid it to his left side shoulder.
“What is going on with your brother?” Miroku said softly to the sleeping Hanyou. “One day he wants to get revenge on you by kidnapping and raping Kagome, the next he saves your life.”
He stared at Inu-Yasha a moment in contemplation.
“Could something have happened to him to make him change his mind about you?” he said, “Maybe almost dying at your hands made him rethink his feelings for you…I wish he wasn't so mysterious, since it seems he'll figure prominently in our lives for a while.”
Next time he glanced at Inu-Yasha, he saw the glitter of his golden eyes regarding him by the light of the newly risen moon.
“How long have you been awake?” said Miroku.
“Long enough,” he rasped. “Did Sesshomaru really save me?”
“Yes,” said Miroku, heaving a sigh, “he sensed what we all couldn't see, and pulled the demon that was draining your life away off you.”
“Huh!” said Inu-Yasha, he was too weak to do much else.
“And before he saved you, he saved me from a demon snake.” Said Miroku, but he did not mention his cries for help that brought him to the demon lord's attention.
“What about that stupid kitsune?” said Inu-Yasha.
“When Sesshomaru found me he had him with him.” Said Mirokuu ruefully.
Just then, the girls, Shippou and Kaede, mobbed them. Tears glittered in the girl's eyes as they took their men in their arms, and Kaede tsk'd and tried to move them out of her way. Shippou just stood to one side, feeling slightly dejected.
“Ouch, Sango,” gasped Miroku as she embraced him, “be careful, I think I may have some broken ribs
Kagome took Inu-Yasha's head in her lap, stroking his hair. He smiled up weakly at her, and blinked as her tears splashed on his face.
“I'm so sorry Inu-Yasha,” she said, “I never meant to put you in danger when I sent you after Shippou.”
Inu-Yasha chuckled.
“After all the danger we've been through, who would've known I'd come so close to death tonight?” whispered Inu-Yasha, “It's not your fault Kagome, don't be sorry.”
“So are you going to tell us what happened?” said Sango.
“Yes, Shippou said something about Sesshomaru saving you?” said Kagome.
“Now, now, don't ye rush them,” said Kaede, moving Sango away from Miroku's side so she could examine his ribs.
“I'll go first,” said Shippou and explained his part of the story while Kaede put salve and bandages on Miroku's bruised and broken ribs.
Miroku spoke next while Kaede examined Inu-Yasha. She could find no external injuries on the hanyou, and said one of her draughts and a lot of rest was what he needed to regain his strength. Kaede instructed Sango and Kagome to help Inu-Yasha get back to the house, saying Miroku's ribs couldn't currently handle the strain. The girls struggled to hoist him up, and he grumbled at his inability to help himself. Slowly they staggered back to the house, each girl supporting him on one side.
“So what's your story Inu-Yasha?” said Kagome, “how did that succubus demon get you?”
The memory of the demon that tricked him by coming at him in the guise of Kikyo made Inu-Yasha shiver involuntarily. The experience was still too fresh and painful in his mind.
“Can we talk about it later?” he said, “I'm really not up to it right now.”
“Okay, I'm sorry Inu-Yasha.” Said Kagome and turned to give him a kiss on the chin, which is all she could reach in their current positions.
Back at the house, the group had a cold dinner. Shippou made no qualms when Kagome put Inu-Yasha next to her to sleep that night, and Sango did the same with Miroku. They were all subdued, thankful that everyone was safe and mystified by the actions of their savior, Sesshomaru.
A/N: Ah, yes, the mysterious Lord of the West. I have no clue what my muse is doing with him, but don't get the idea that he has turned good! Sesshomaru may be an enigma for this entire story for all I know….
