Chapter 19

Attack In The Forest

The next morning Kagome and Sango went to wash some clothes. They seated themselves comfortably by the stream bank and chatted while they worked. It hadn't been that long before they heard an altercation coming from the direction of Kaede's house.

“That doesn't sound good,” said Kagome ominously.

“Let's go back to the house and see what's going on,” replied Sango.

Kagome jumped to her feet and then helped her friend to stand up. They headed back at a trot.

Kaede stood blocking the entrance to her home, looking at the three people in front of her in dismay and fear. What had come over them to make them act like this?

“Where is Kagome?”

“Give us the jewel shards!”

“Let us in old woman!”

They looked possessed as they as they menacingly crowded the steps.

Kagome had come to an abrupt halt just out of sight of the house when she heard her name. She put out her hand to halt Sango from getting any closer and listened and looked intently at the scene before them.

“Are you thinking what I'm thinking?” whispered Kagome.

“Yes, they must be possessed,” said Sango grimly.

“You go around back and get our weapons. I'll lead them off into the forest where they can't hurt anyone.” Said Kagome.

Kagome waited for Sango to slip away before letting her presence be known.

“Leave Kaede alone!” she yelled, “It's me you want, come and get me!”

A crowd of startled villagers had begun to arrive at the scene. The three possessed people staggered in their tracks and turned around to see where Kagome's voice had come from. When they spotted her they growled.

“Give us the shards!”

“The shards, witch!”

A commotion ensued as Kagome sprinted for the forest, her pursuers pushing passed the crowd and after her. As she neared her destination Kagome scanned it as much as she could. The one who was controlling the three villagers had to be hiding in here somewhere. The only way she could free them from their enslavement was to find and stop the one controlling the enchantment. A niggling thought nibbled at the corner of her mind, warning her that this may be a trap. The thought made her heart constrict a little with nervous fear, which she suppressed before it could weaken her resolve. She hoped Sango got here soon!

Just as she entered the forest, Kirara landed next to her, Sango on her back. She through down Kagome's bow and quiver of arrows. Quickly she dismounted, brandishing her hiraikotsu.

“Kirara should go and keep the villagers from following us,” said Kagome, and Sango agreed.

The demon exterminator spoke shortly to the fire cat, and then Kirara was off.

“They're catching up to us,” said Sango as she watched the fire cat leave.

“We have to find her,” said Kagome, “but please be careful Sango, I don't know if I should have let you come here in your condition.”

“I would not be safe anywhere, so I would rather fight.” Said Sango, and smiled reassuringly at her friend.

At that moment a flash of white caught Kagome's eye. She hissed and took a step backward, pulling an arrow from her quiver and notching it on her bow. Sango gripped her hiraikotsu tighter and narrowed her eyes in the direction her friend was looking at. They were startled by a thunderous, raucous noise coming from above the forest canopy. At the same time Kanna stepped out from behind a tree, her mirror flashing. The reflected light hit them right in the eyes, temporarily blinding them.

Kagome had flung up her arms to shield her eyes when she felt a fetid blast nearly knock her over. The air was forced out of her as two talons grabbed her from the back in a vise-like grip. Unable to make a sound, she dropped her weapons as she was jerked into the air. She heard her friend cry out her name as she started to black out.

Sango had just turned away from the flash of light when she saw the giant demon raptor grab Kagome. It took only a moment for her to steady herself, call out her friend's name, and through the hiraikotsu. The boom-a-rang shaped weapon hit the beast full on in the throat. Choking and spluttering, it dropped Kagome, and turned its furious gaze on her.

Just before she passed out, Kagome saw the demon raptor lunge for Sango.

A/N: Sorry it took so long to get this chapter done. I had computer problems, and what with working full time and taking care of my baby, I found little time to write. I hope this installment meets your approval, and I'll try to post the next chapter soon.
