InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Settling ❯ Chapter 1
[ A - All Readers ]
In the aftermath of the battle for the Shikon no tama and the loss of her beloved hanyou, she was too despondent to think about the future and what it would bring. Without Inuyasha there was no future. Not for her.
Her bruised and battered heart shattered still more when the ancient well refused to allow her passage home. She would no longer see the faces of her family and friends. Miroku and Sango watched as she slipped further and further into despair despite all their efforts to comfort her.
Kouga even tried to cheer her up, in his own way, by proclaiming her his woman and offering to make her his mate. Every day for two weeks he tried to convince her, until finally she told him in no uncertain terms that she was not his and never would be. He left and never returned.
It was Akitoki Hojo who finally managed to coax her out of her shell. No one was sure how he did it, but slowly she learned to smile again. To Kagome, he was a reminder of the one’s left behind on the other side of the well - Mom, Grandpa, Souta, Eri, Ayumi, Yuka, and even Hojo. Shippo was convinced it was all the great presents he gave her.
Eventually, Akitoki asked her to marry him and she accepted. She never forgot Inuyasha, but over the years her broken heart began to mend and she could look upon his memory without the deep sense of sorrow and longing that she once had.
Today, she stood in the doorway of their small hut watching her husband playing with their two children. She couldn’t help but smile at the antics of her family as they chased each other around. Suddenly and without reason, Akitoki tripped over his own two feet and fell face first into the ground. Laughing he picked himself up, brushed himself off and began running after the children again, only to stumble over a rock hidden in the grass.
Maybe she should have married Kouga after all.
