CHAPTER THIRTEEN
WORK AND WINNINGS
Satoshi Hiwatari. That was his name. The chief of police was a light haired teenager with a very high IQ. Kagome had briefly heard about him from Dark during his explanations about himself. He hadn't been too specific, though. She could only remember that Dark had said he was dangerous and an enemy in more ways than one. She really didn't know too much about him. But there was something...
...Something that she was honestly attracted to. There was a pert little tug in her belly that she couldn't ignore. It had her answering his questions in the interrogation room and only 50% of them were half hearted answers.
"Kagome Higurashi. It that your name?" He said. His voice was like a whisper. It was strange and appealing. The miko frowned. She was liking this guy way too much. "Uh-huh."
"And you live with?"
"My Aunt. I moved here ten days ago, from my family shrine." Kagome lowered her eyes as she babbled on. "I came here because I was having problems with a boy." She admitted.
"A boy." Well at least she's straight. Satoshi thought with a slight grin. He hadn't thought that she would answer his questions so easily. And that last line...Was that a cry for sympathy? He mentally shrugged off the idea. "What is your relation to Dark?" He asked in a flat tone.
"Um..I met him when I first came here."
"How?" Satoshi raised a brow. "He doesn't tend to get to close to his admirers."
Kagome grimaced. "I. Am. Not. An. Admirer." She stated. "I just met him one time and he asked my name. I told him." She sighed dramatically and shifted in her chair. This little room suddenly seemed stuffy. "I have no personal relationship with him whatsoever."
"Then why did he claim to be offending you against..um"
"Inuyasha." She implied for his benefit. "Dark..um...likes me and uh...Inuyasha is my ex. So Dark was fighting for me." Kagome frowned. She quite liked the concept of that. Being fought over by two men was, in a way, a man's highest compliment to a woman. She suddenly smiled with glee. "Except I got the best of Inuyasha, cuz I knew how."
"Inuyasha, you say?" Satoshi wrote that name down on a small pad of paper. "And how did you 'get the best of him'?"
Kagome bit her lip. "The Enchanted Beads." She motioned with her hands. "Around his neck. They're bespelled."
He nodded as if he believed her. However, she didn't know him very well. "And your Inuyasha friend is not...normal?" He squinted. "He had strange..uh..qualities."
She couldn't resist. She told him. "He's a half dog demon from the fuedal era."
Satoshi nodded. "I could believe that."
Kagome perked up with a startled expression. "Really?"
He smiled. "I am quite aware of many things, Miss Higurashi. Don't underestimate my understanding. She leaned back, wondering if she should tell him other things. Then she felt that strange tug again and told him anyway. "I'm a miko, the reincarnation of another, and the holder of the Shikon no Tama."
His eyes widened slightly. "That might explain why the Phantom Thief has taken an interest in you." He implied.
She shook her head. "He doesn't know this. Dark knows very little about me at all."
Satoshi frowned at her expression. She sounded...regretful? But she had said that she didn't really like him.
"I need proof, Kagome. Prove to me that you are a miko of formidable power and I will leave you alone for now." He told her in a most friendly tone. Kagome sighed. She really would like to be let off that easily. Shrugging, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small glass container. The jewel glowed softly under her power.
"The Shikon jewel, sir." She gave it to him and nearly fell over forwards to snatch it back when its glow darkened in his grasp. She looked up at him with wide eyes. She couldn't sense any sort of aura coming from him. He grinned rather darkly and nodded. "Miko Kagome, you have your leave." He stood and walked around the table to open the door for her. "Have a nice day." He hissed as she walked by him.
And then she felt it. It was an aura much like Dark's, except far similar to Naraku's. He withheld his better than the thief did, however. She turned to stare at him suspisciously. What color were his eyes? Blue, it seemed at first, blue eyes filled to the brim with torment. And then she looked even deeper. Ah. They were gold. He was just like Dark.
"Goodbye, Satoshi. I'll see you around." She said and exited the building, completely.
He chuckled at her back.

"Dammit, Dark, you weren't suppose to transform!" Daisuke yelled to his other half.
"Sorry! But she was there the whole time and I had to fight it! It's not easy, you know!" Dark snapped. Dai was hiding in a tree with Wiz on his shoulder. "Now I have to do all the running!" He jumped out of the tree and landed perfectly on his feet. Then he shot north to where his house was.
"Why should I have to do everything anyway! You're just as good as I am with as long as we've been stuck together.!"
Was that a compliment? Daisuke thought with amazement. Dark wouldn't normally admit that anyone was as good as he was. Half grinning to himself, he decided that he could deal with this...and started to run faster.
Afterall, they had too many things to settle when they got home to Emiko.

Inuyasha stood bristling in the past. What did that girl think she was doing? She had pushed his temper a little too far. His inner demon had been straining against tetsusaiga's grasp. He'd come so close to transforming. The scary part was that he almost let himself. He wanted his Kagome back and he would do anything to get what he wanted.
Inuyasha sat in a tree and closed his eyes. She would return to him. Soon.

Kagome stared at Daisuke with pity. He was breathing harshly and couldn't hardly walk. "Hey Kags." he said with a grunt. He was laying on the couch in his living room. "Sorry about everything, but we didn't have a choice." Kagome thought it was so cute, how Dai would take responsibility for anything that Dark did. They were such a good pair....Yet poor Daisuke, he'd lose a part of himself if he actually ever did end up with Riku.
Kagome sat down in an arm chair and sighed.
Dark spoke to Daisuke. "Uh oh." He hissed.
"What?" Dai said yawning. He pulled an arm over his eyes.
"She did the sigh thing!" Dark exclaimed. "That is not a good thing to hear from a woman!"
"Piffle. What does it mean anyway?" Daisuke was sick of hearing Dark's complaints. It was too bad sometimes that he couldn't just block out the Great Phantom Thief's voice. "Just leave her alone Dark."
"Hell no!" Dark spoke angrily. "I don't complain about your taste in women!"
"Cuz most of the time my taste in women was the same as yours." Daisuke pointed out.
"Ack! She did it again!" Dark hissed after Kagome sighed for a second time. "I know how things work. Kagome..." He cleared his throat. "Kagome likes somebody."
"That is positively the most vague explanation you've ever given me, Dark."
"Let me take over!" Dark ordered.
"Nnnn. I don't feel like it right now!" Daisuke complained and rolled over on his stomach. "You made me do all the hard stuff today."
"Please, Daisuke!" Dark whined. "I wanna talk to Kagome!"
Wow. Dark sounded absolutely desperate. Daisuke concentrated on a mental picture of Riku. It wasn't hard to transform, since he was so exhausted. "Kagome!" Dark said grinning. Then he cringed. His body was aching quite badly. Daisuke must have been really tired. Sorry about that, Daisuke.
It's alright.
Kagome turned to him, her face in a pout. "Hey." She said before turning her head to look out of the window again.
Dark didn't really know what to do. So he stuck with the jealousy ploy to see if he could get anything out of her. "Ah....Kagome doesn't love me anymore?!"
Her head snapped around. "What. The. Hell?"
Dark lunged across the room and landed in her lap. He threw his arms around her neck and forced her to look into his eyes, two violet orbs of fire. She blushed crimson and tried to struggle out of his grasp. "No!" He yelled and held on tighter, resisting her fighting and the urge to transform both at once.
"Dark, get offa me!" She snapped, eyes burning.
He grinned. Now he was making progress. "But I want to stay with Kagome!" He cried out. She froze when he nuzzled his face in her neck. "Mmmm Kagome smells good." He whispered.
"SIT! OFF! GET OFFA ME!!!" She was trying anything to make him detach himself, but having much more trouble than she would have ever deemed possible. Then she tried an old tactic; one that had always worked well with Inuyasha. Kagome put on a pouty face and made him look at her. His confidence drop in an instant. "Please..." She whispered, looking as if she was very near crying.
Then he surprised her too. Dark moved to fast for her to really know what he had done, but he somehow twisted so that she was sitting curled up in his lap with her arms around his neck. The whole notion had her feeling a little lightheaded. Without thinking, she let her head fall against his shoulder. I really am upset, she thought amused. Maybe I should just give up on demons and half demons all together. Then she looked up at Dark and saw the worry in his eyes.
Oh, what was I thinking again? She forced her mind to follow a straight path, but it kept rolling off. Replacing her head in its formal position, Kagome told Dark. "The chief of police was quite handsome."
He froze. "Huh?"
"Satoshi Hiwatari....I liked him, even though he seemed a little creepy." She shrugged, which proceeded to be a difficult thing to do in her current position.
"NOT him, Kagome. Don't even look at the bastard." The anger in his voice actually concerned her. "What do you mean?" She asked, snuggling closer. Wow. She had never felt this comfortable with Inuyasha before.
"Just don't. There's too much there that you don't understand." You don't understand....Kagome shoved out of Dark's embrace. He looked up, confused as she informed him. "Never tell me that I don't understand something!" She yelled. "I'm going home!" I'm going home! It ended the same way nearly every time. Nearly...except she'd left him once for good. And now it was over.
Almost.
"Kagome-"
"I love you Inuyasha, but you had better hurry up and decide who you love!” Kagome paraded through the door and was gone. Dark's mood blackened. “I AM NOT THAT GODFORSAKEN HALF DEMON! WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE TALKING ABOUT?! AND WHY WON'T SHE JUST GIVE IN!”
I told him. Daisuke thought. But he never does listen.
Maybe one day he'll understand.
Maybe.
