Chapter 2
"Kirara, stop! What are you doing," I shouted over the howling winds as Kirara shot out of the well only to take to the air and rush off in the opposite direction of the village that had been my second home in my teen years.
Kirara did nothing except growl loudly and I could do nothing more than hold on for dear life as the fire cat demon ran through the air toward an unknown destination. For the first time, I noticed the strong aura coming off of the collar around Kirara's neck. It was glowing a faint purple color and would pulse frequently. Reaching out I gripped it and felt a strong surge repel my hand but it was too weak and it lost in the battle as I held on tightly to it until it stopped glowing. Without a moment to comprehend what was happening the magical beads broke apart with a loud snap and fell noiselessly to the ground a hundred feet below us.
Turning to glance around myself I realized that the sky was a lot darker than it used to be, 'it's the middle of summer after all,' I thought.
Feeling all the strong energies flowing around me I quickly concealed my miko energy that I was sure was sending out a bright beacon to all the demons within a three hundred mile radius. Turning my attention off of the gloomy looking forest below I once again tried to get Kirara to stop and land somewhere.
"Kirara, where are we going," I shouted angrily at the determined fire demon. "You can't just come and kidnap me after five years!"
Again my comments went unheeded but I don't know what I really expected, it's not like she could talk to me anyways. So I just decided to sit back and enjoy the fresh, crisp air of the Feudal Era. I hadn't breathed such fresh air in awhile and it was such a blessing, but it also brought back painful memories of my last moments in this time. Glancing down at my watch I realized that we had been flying for longer than an hour and the sun, what could be seen behind the heavy clouds, was slowly descending behind the mountains.
As it was finally becoming too dark to see, other than the bright fire that lit up Kirara's feet and tail, Kirara began to descend slowly toward a large blockade that was shadowed in darkness. The tall wooden beams that made up the outer wall (think of the log barrier of the English settlement in Pocahontas, you know what I mean? If not...crap). There were some fires going within and I could hear the clanking of metal on metal and the banter of human communication. As Kirara soared above I could feel some people glancing up in wonder but I sensed no fear.
That was when I noticed that although there were an absurd number of humans within the settlement there were also a large number of what appeared to be friendly demons, some giving off large amounts of power. Shuddering slightly and covering up my power and scent more I glanced around and was surprised when Kirara landed with a jerk onto the ground. Hopping off quickly, I stood staring around myself in wonder before my gaze fixated on the large wooden structure that probably served as the lord's house in the center of the large village.
'Either way,' I thought, glancing surreptitiously at the large building, 'I'm about to meet someone."
Nothing could have prepared me for just who walked out of that home, although it shouldn't of been of such great surprise to me. I'm sure my mouth was hanging open as a lovely woman ran out and threw her arms around me in a loving embrace.
"Kagome! I haven't seen you in forever!"
After a moment she stepped back and smiled at me in pure happiness. She was practically glowing. Her long black hair was pulled back in a high pony tail with a pink tie and she wore her same demon exterminator outfit with the final touch being the hot pink eye shadow above her eyes.
Her quiet companion stood tall next to her wearing a spin off male version of the woman's demon exterminator outfit, instead of pink and black he wore a green and black outfit. His hair was longer than I last remembered, but the rattail still hung at the nape of his neck. But unlike in the past he no longer wore his glove and prayer beads for they were of no use anymore.
I stood in shock as they smiled in my direction and I couldn't help the childlike squeal that bubbled out of my throat as I tackled them both to the floor, all of us laughing as I hugged them tightly.
"Sango, Miroku, I can't believe it's you two," I said excitedly as I finally released them and stood up.
As I began to brush off my low-cut stretch jeans and black tank top I noticed they both sat on the ground looking up at me in disbelief.
"I do believe that was the most pleasing greeting I have had in a long time," said the perverted monk as his eyes shined brightly in the dark with mischief.
Nothing could save him from Sango bashing him upside the head with her hand as she stood up mumbling about how things should have changed by now. Instead of staying on the issue like they would in the past Sango merely frowned at him and turned her attention back to me, smiling brightly.
"We have so much to talk about," she said cheerily before her mood began to darken, "some of it is not good news and I'm afraid that is the reason why we sent Kirara to fetch you."
I stared at her in wonder before nodding my head in acceptance and allowing her to grab my arm and lead me inside, a now small Kirara following quietly in our wake as a now conscious Miroku stood up with as much dignity as he could and followed grinningly behind us.
As we relaxed in a comfortably furnished room with tea and the evening meal, I glanced around myself and noticed that Sango was sitting closer to Miroku than she allowed him to in the past and that her had yet to touch her inappropriately. Then finally I caught on as Sango reached for more rice and I saw the small golden band that rested on her right ring finger.
Choking on the tea I was currently swallowing, I jumped up as soon as I cleared my lungs and pointed back and forth at the two of them.
"You two got married," I blurted out before I could catch myself. 'God, I must look like an immature teen right now, smooth one Kagome,' I thought glumly.
Miroku grinned at me and winked. Satisfied that I had made a fool of myself I sat down as calmly as possible and waited. The meal was over and I felt there was a lot of explaining coming that I needed to be ready for.
Sango sipped the last of her tea and set down the cup on the small white plate with an ominous air of worry. Placing her hands gently in her lap she looked across the table at me and took a deep breath.
"Okay, now, I realize that you must be confused about why we sent Kirara to retrieve you and that your probably wondering what has happened in the time you have been gone," she said, her voice just as strong as it had been 5 years ago.
I could only nod my head at her and switch to a more comfortable position.
"Now, before I go into detail about why you're here I'll give you some background. You know that when you left Inuyasha went to the Western lands to find out what his brother wanted with him. It turns out that Inuyasha had become of age to gain partial control of the Western Lands and became the co-ruler of them along with Sesshoumaru. So Inuyasha is now Lord Inuyasha of the Western Lands. About two years ago Inuyasha came by our village and retrieved Shippo for reasons still unknown to us. Over the years we have sort of fallen out of touch with one another," she said with a hint of sadness and disappointment in her voice.
I could only nod in surprise.
'Lord Inuyasha? Is that what Sesshoumaru planned on doing from the beginning? And Shippo...what's he doing over there I wonder, I wonder if he still looks the same,' I thought to myself as Sango began to continue her story.
"Now, I'm sure your wondering how this village came to be once again. It turns out that when Miroku and I returned to return this village to its powerful standing we found the beginnings of it already begun by a group of Demon Exterminators that managed to survive Naraku's attack. Our work had been put into motion 3 years before the end of our battle, 1 year after the attack. So, once we arrived, the acting leader accepted us back into the community having heard about our group and that I was the only living relative of the leader of our village, my father in other words."
"So for the past 5 years we've restored the Exterminator village and managed to continue where we left off. About 2 years ago, the leader of the reconstruction group past away and left Miroku and me in charge of the village. The rest will be explained through time but for now there are more pressing matters that need to be attended too."
I could only nod numbly at Sango as she finished speaking about the past and what had occurred in the time I was MIA from the Feudal Era. Staring at Sango, waiting for her to continue my eyes switched quickly over to Miroku as he picked up where she left off.
"Now, the reason why we retrieved you is because our world is in trouble and your assistance is in dire need. About 1 year ago a rebel group of demons left over from the time of Naraku rose up and began to attack the four corner lands. The Northern Lands ruled by Lord Naden received the first attack and barely managed to fend them off until it's ally, the Southern Lands ruled by Lord Sonto aided them in the battle, yet still both sides received serious damage and to this day have yet to recover due to the continue attacks on both their lands. Just recently the Eastern Lands, ruled by Lord Kouga and the Western Lands, ruled by both Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha were attacked by the rebel group. The four lands at the moment have banded together but seem to be lacking in strength against the rebel group and just recently, no longer than a week ago we received word from Inuyasha that our assistance would be needed if it was in the realm of possibility. After we received the news we sent word immediately back that we would aid them and they should expect us to be at the Western Lands border no later that 7 moons later. That day is tomorrow," Miroku said strongly, trying to relay the details of what was happening.
"That's great and all, but why was I brought here," I asked, unsure of where this was heading and what it would lead to.
I had just managed to get my life back together and now I had been pulled away from it before I could even begin to enjoy it.
"Kagome," he said, reaching across the table and holding my hand firmly, "the reason you were brought back is because of just who the leader of this rebel group is."
After I said nothing and just glanced between the two of them for a moment, Miroku said softly.
"Kagome, the leader of the group is none other than Naraku's descendent. The problem is no-one has seen him. No-one knows who or what he is or what he plans on doing."
For a moment I could only stare at him in utter shock and surprise. I couldn't understand how this could happen. I mean I understood how is could have happened, but how and when. Since when did Naraku have a son and who gave birth to him?
Taking a deep breath I swallowed the lump in my throat and said as calmly as I could, "You need me to help defeat him, don't you. Like how I defeated Naraku, am I right?"
Sango smiled tentatively and nodded her head.
"I know this comes as a shock, but this Ukaran is different, he's too strong and practically running loops around the Lords, nothing had been able to stop him. It must be bad if Inuyasha, after four years of speaking less than 5 words to us, sent for our aid. Am I right," asked Sango.
I just stared at her. I couldn't believe I was being pulled back into a life I thought I had left behind years ago. My thought's were interrupted when a man, dressed in fighting gear and holding a long scythe like object entered the room and bowed down on one knee to Sango and Miroku.
"My lord and lady, the troops have been assembled and are ready to leave at any moment, do you wish for me to give them the command to head out," he asked.
Miroku nodded and sent the men off to start the march. A few shouts and yells were heard and then the commotion of a large group of people moving was heard. We waited at least 5 minutes until the commotion began to die down, then Miroku and Sango stood, glancing down at me.
"Kagome, I know this is shocking and I'm sure you put the past behind you but we need your help, your friends need your help, this world needs your help, Shippo needs your help, but most of all Inuyasha needs your help," Sango said, reaching over and grabbing her large boomerang at the same time Miroku grabbed his ever present staff, "will you help us?"
I began to tear up, water leaking into my eyes as I looked up at them both. I already knew my answer. I knew they weren't going to be happy. Fear was creeping into my heart as I opened my mouth to give them my answer.
And as I gave it and the words left my mouth, my heart was once again broken into pieces.
"I can't help you, I'm sorry."
Mwa-ha-ha! That is officially my first cliffhanger! Was it good? Now, was this at all confusing to anyone? Do I need to go back and give more details and stuff...? More details will develop throughout the story but was that okay for now? Drop me a little review to let me know!
Well have fun!
