Throb
Throbbing.
Smack! Smack! Hard enough that she knew without a doubt that there would be a purple bruise on her cheek tomorrow.
Pulsating as if alive.
It ached. The stinging in her cheek-- the feel of it, so real, so hurtful. She wanted to die.
Tears make you weak. Don't cry; Ignore it if you must.
She ignored the throbbing in her head. Ignored the way the world spun as she turned away from him. She ignored the hurtful words he shouted at her, and she ignored the burning lines of wetness on her face.
Fight the lie. Do not give up. Death is not the answer.
She threw things. Shattering windows and mirrors, breaking the chair to her vanity over her bed. Grabbing fistfuls of hair, she shrieked.
Sleep away the pain. Forget the hurtful things.
She slid into bed, pulling the soft, fleece sheets over her head. She tried forgetting the ache of her cheek, and the hateful words that he had said to her. So, when the darkness of oblivion finally overcame her, she muttered a grateful prayer and hoped that this night was just a bad dream.
