"Goodness! What happened to you? Don't tell me you walked!"
"I'm fine, is the band here?"
Kouga ignored the clothes sticking to his form, it didn't matter, he never got sick. Making his way up the steps to the stage, he knew exactly what he wanted to play, that new piece they'd composed a few days earlier at Tsume's place. After getting the guys' attention, he saw they intended to play and shook his head.
"You guys mind doing the new one?"
Ginta raised an eyebrow at that but shrugged, "Not really, but we haven't written the words remember?"
"I've got it all done," Kouga sighed, "I've had it stuck in my head all day."
"Hey you guys I'm glad Kouga's here now, the agent from the record company only has ten more minutes, so you need to get out there and play your stuff." Ayame handed Kouga a towel for him to dry his hair.
Taking it with a grateful nod, Kouga took down his ponytail and rubbed the towel over his ebony tresses. "I'm ready to go on if you are."
"Are you sure you want to play that one? You'll be totally on your own with the vocals," Kiba asked.
Nodding his head, he grabbed his microphone and led the way out to the stage. The others had already set up, after another couple of minutes of tuning their instruments, Kouga noticed Ayame speaking to a man in a business suit near the bar and realized the man wanted to leave. Motioning towards the others, he stepped back and grinned when Miroku came up to announce them.
"Hey guys! Sorry for the wait, Kouga decided to take advantage of the rain to get his monthly shower."
A round of laughter was heard and Kouga glared at the grinning pervert who quickly got on with it, "But now that he's clean and here, and you guys have been waiting as eagerly as I have to hear them, I present to you - The Pack, with their hit, This Love!"
The audience cheered, some long-time followers of the band, others new people who'd casually come into the coffee house for a drink. Bringing up a stool to take a seat on, Kouga left the towel around his neck and thanked them for their applause.
"Hey guys, actually, we've decided to change things up a bit and give you all a surprise," he gave them a smile and shrugged, "We just came up with this song a few days ago so I hope you like it!"
Unbeknownst to him, while he turned to grab his guitar, a small figure entered the coffee shop. Making her way over to the bar, the young lady took up the only seat available, in front of an older gentleman in a business suit. Ordering a regular coffee, she turned in her seat and focused on the young man at the microphone, oblivious to the curious man beside her, watching both her and the singer closely.
~ Beauty queen of only eighteen
~ She had some trouble with herself
~ He was always there to help her
~ She always belonged to someone else
The young girl stiffened, biting her lip at the song's words.
It was obvious enough to the older man that she was the beauty queen.
Black hair, soul-ful brown eyes, pouty pink lips and a creamy complexion. He remembered suddenly, a beauty pagent his daughter had been in. She'd lost - to this girl.
~ I drove for miles and miles
~ And wound up at your door
~ I've had you so many times but somehow
~ I want more
Lost in her own thoughts, the young girl remained unaware of the man beside her and his interest in her.
She was thinking of earlier that day, of a visit she'd had with the young man on stage. After another fight with her boyfriend, she'd done what she always did and called him. The storm had been raging all day, but he'd come, like he always had. Silently holding her while she cried, saying nothing really - after all, she knew how he felt.
She'd known for some time.
But once her tears had settled and her hiccups stopped, he'd kissed her cheek and left, saying once again 'good-bye'.
It was always the same.
She'd call, he'd come, saying only 'last time' before holding her tight, and leaving with a solemn 'good-bye'.
They'd been saying good-bye for four months now.
Planning on going to bed, she'd locked the door, moved over to close the curtains, and caught a glimpse of him across the street. He was leaning against his car and watching her window with an expression that broke her heart. He seemed completely unfazed by the water pouring down on him, he didn't even seem to notice it was raining.
Feeling guilty, she'd moved away from the window and gone into her room, laying down on her bed to think.
And suddenly here she was, in the small coffee shop owned by their friends, listening to him sing - their story.
~ I don't mind spending everyday
~ Out on your corner in the pouring rain
~ Look for the girl with the broken smile
~ Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
~ And she will be loved
~ She will be loved
Tears welled in her eyes.
The gentleman beside her frowned a little in worry, glancing up at the singer to see his mournful expression as well.
The song was rather poignant, but he was sure there had to be more.
~ Tap on my window knock on my door
~ I want to make you feel beautiful
~ I know I tend to get so insecure
~ It doesn't matter anymore
Kagome sighed, memories flashing through her mind.
Nearly a year earlier:
"Kouga, are you there?"
"Hey Kagome! What're you doing here so late?"
Kagome slipped into his window, giving her best friend a great big hug, accompanied by a kiss on his cheek. "I couldn't sleep, I'm worried about tomorrow."
"What's there to worry about? You go, smile that gorgeous smile and get a crown," Kouga grinned, pulled her over to his bed and flopped down onto it, his grin widening when she snuggled into his side.
Kagome sighed, "Its not that easy Kouga, there'll be lots of girls there, what if I lose? I need this scholarship, otherwise I can't go to Tokyo University with you."
"You'll win," he ran a hand down her back soothingly, "Believe me Kags, there's not a girl in Tokyo that can compare to you."
"Hmph, you're only saying that because you're my best friend," She sighed and draped her arm across his chest, "You have to say that."
"Actually I probably shouldn't say it because I'm your best friend," Kouga mumbled, shaking his head when she asked him to repeat himself. "Nevermind."
~ It's not always rainbows and butterflies
~ It's compromise that moves us along
~ My heart is full and my door's always open
~ You can come anytime you want
Six months later:
"I don't like him Kagome"
Kouga frowned, watching her pack with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
Kagome sighed, "I'm sorry about that Kouga, but you hardly give him a chance. Every time he tries to speak to you, you give some rude answer and walk away. Sessh really wants to be friends with you."
Leaving the shirts she'd been about to pack on the suitcase, she came over and set her hands on his forearms, "You mean the world to me Kouga, you know that, you're my best friend, my other half, but I really like this guy. I wish you could make an effort to get along with him. Are you not gonna come over and visit me anymore?"
"Not at his place," Kouga shook his head, "I don't see why you have to move in with him."
"Because the university is on the other side of the city and my new job is even farther. His apartment is just two blocks from school and three metro stops from work." Kagome sighed, resting her cheek on his chest, "And its also the most logical step for our relationship to take now."
"You've only been going out for six months," he reminded her.
"And we want to take things up a level," moving away, she put away the shirts and went into her closet, "So will you come visit me?"
"Not at the apartment," Kouga insisted, "But we can meet at the Den if you want."
Giving a sigh, she nodded her head and continued her packing, "I guess that'll have to work."
"Yeah... but for how long?"
Hearing a car pull up outside, he recognized the motor and moved forward to give her a quick hug and kiss on the cheek. Heading out of her room, he met up with her boyfriend on the steps and silently gave him a nod before leaving, ignoring his invitation to join them while saying a quick good-bye to her mom.
[Meetings at the Den - I guess it could be worse]
Picking up a picture frame from her desk, she looked down at them with some friends at prom and felt a clump form in her throat.
Somehow she knew things would never be the same again. - And she missed him already.
Snapping out of her thoughts, Kagome came back to the present, blinking and struggling to hold in the moisture in her eyes while she listened to the chorus of the song again.
~ I don't mind spending everyday
~ Out on your corner in the pouring rain
~ Look for the girl with the broken smile
~ Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
~ And she will be loved
~ She will be loved
[I thought I was loved]
Slowly, one tear escaped from her eye, rolling down her cheeck and leaving a singular trail in its wake.
Another slipped down her other cheek, followed soon by a third.
She let them, eyes glued on the young musician.
The man beside her hesitated a moment, his heart breaking at the sight of the pain in her lovely eyes.
~ I know where you hide
~ Alone in your car
~ Know all of the things that make you who you are
~ I know that goodbye means nothing at all
~ Comes back and begs me to catch her every time she falls
At the edge of the stage, Ayame, daughter of the coffee shop's owner and loyal follower of the band, heard the pain in Kouga's voice and felt a stab of her own pain at the sound. She knew all about his feelings for Kagome, she'd somehow always known, and yet she'd tried to win him over in spite of them.
Now she realized she'd struggled in vain.
Having glanced over to the bar to make sure the agent was still there, she'd seen the girl sitting beside him and felt her heart stop. Clutching a cup of coffee in her hands, Kagome sat staring at her best friend, oblivious to anything but him - even the tears slipping from her eyes.
~ Tap on my window knock on my door
~ I want to make you feel beautiful
Kouga sang, remembering the times she's snuck over to his house, the tapping on his window in the middle of the night.
He remembered her sister Kikyo, always the family beauty, the diva who was even now in L.A. working on a film with Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep. How cruel she'd been to her little sister, putting her down, while her mother scolded her lightly while still praising her beauty.
Kagome's insecurities - even after she'd won the pagent.
He remembered hugging her after she'd won.
Her smile as she'd kissed his cheek and thanked him for being right.
Remembered his own hesitation to ask her out - which eventually brought them to where they were now.
With her tucked away in the the small apartment she shared with Sesshomaru, while he stared whistfully up at her window.
~ I don't mind spending everyday

Kagome heard a soft 'plop' and looked down, realizing one of her tears had fallen into her coffee
Setting the cup down on the counter behind her, she vaguely listened to the singing and realized it wasn't Kouga's voice, but Kibe's doing the soft background.
It seemed rather fitting, that he sing such words.
It was almost as if he were telling Kouga.
~ Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
~ Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
She looked up again, looked into the blue eyes she'd known for as long as she could remember - and realized her mistake.
His eyes closed, head lowering a bit so his bangs covered them as he sang the last lines softly.
Taking the opportunity while he wasn't looking, she slipped off her stool and carefully made her way between the tables, stopping once she was at the steps of the stage.
~ Yeah
~ I don't mind spending everyday
~ Out on your corner in the pouring rain
The music slowed, his voice softened to the lightest whisper as the song ended.
~ Try so hard to say goodbye
The coffee house remained silent, everyone stunned by the heartfelt performance.
Even the band seemed schocked, only Kouga moved to set his guitar down and stand, turning to the steps and freezing in place.
Time stopped, blue met brown and the people around them dissapeared.
For a few precious seconds, Kouga stared into Kagome's eyes, seeing the sadness in them behind her tears.
But then they were gone, to be replaced by a pair of hands on his cheeks and soft lips touching his.
Breathing in the scent of jasmine, coffee, and rain, he instantly recognized the person kissing him and a deep shudder ran through his body. This is what he'd wanted, for so long. Without another thought, his arms circled her back, clutching her to him, and his lips responded to hers. Briefly the thought that they were on stage at the Den flashed through his mind, but he was too overwhelmed at the moment to care.
All he could focus on was the girl crushed against him, the hands clinging to his shirt, the body pressed against his. Her lips, her pouty lips that he'd dreamed of kissing, were really there this time.
To Kagome's surprise, his kiss was nothing like any of the others she'd recieved. He didn't try to dominate her, make her bend to his will in any way. He didn't try to make her open to him or try to force her or sweep her away. He kissed her as if she were delicate, all gentle and caring, and so sweet that tears were again slipping from her eyes.
Breaking the kiss, they stayed together, even as the stage lights dimmed and the softer main lights came back on. With her head resting in the crook of his neck, his cheek settled on top of her hair, they took a moment to savor the feeling of being together at last.
A throat being cleared beside them broke through the reverie that had settled over them. Looking at the gentleman standing at the end of the stage, they blushed and pulled away a little, holding hands and leaning against one another.
"My name's Quatre Winner, I'm the agent from Fushi Records and I'd like to give you my card," He handed over the paper and smiled, "That was a great piece, I really like your band's style. If you call tomorrow we could set up a meeting with my partners and your own agent, see if we could strike up a deal."
"Wow, that'd be great," Kouga accepted the card with a dazed expression, "Uh we don't have an agent yet but..."
"Don't worry about that, we can work things out," The man smiled and rolled his eyes when his phone rang. "I have to go but give me a call tomorrow."
"I sure will, thank you sir," Kouga's eyes shined brightly as he looked down at the girl at his side.
"Oh and just one more thing," the man stopped and his expression softened for a moment, "Make sure you keep your promise my boy, I'll be expecting to see a lot more of the both of you soon."
"Hai"
Watching the man leave, Miroku came to their side and rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "What promise was he talking about?"
Smirking at his friend's confusion, Kouga felt a tug on his hand and smiled down at the girl beside him, lowering his lips to hers once again. The moment their lips met, all her troubles seemed to melt away and Kagome was sure of one thing, this time it would be different, right. No more arguments, no more cheating and pain. A line of the song ran through both their minds as their lips melded together, the promise made.
And she knew for certain it was true, because she always had been, at least by this man.
