Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha. No matter how much I may want to. Only Shigeru is my creation.

Rest easy fans! Rumors of my demise at the hands of Russian ninja penguin assassins were unfounded!

"This...isn't happening....n-not...not again..." Shippou whispered. Ever since Kagome and the others had come into his life this nightmare had ceased to haunt his every sleeping moment. He watched, paralyzed by fear, as the horrible scene was being replayed right before his very eyes. He wanted to scream at his father to stop, to tell him that he couldn't win.

Papa darted to the side, easily avoiding Maten's vicious ax swing. Papa grit his teeth as indigo flames spiraled up his arm. With a growl Papa reared back then hurled a massive comet of fire, "FOXFIRE BURST!!!"

Maten raised his ax just as the foxfire struck, using his brute strength to force the flames to pass harmlessly around his body like water. "HA! You'll have to do better than that!" Maten opened his large maw and spat a beam of lightning.

Papa raised a magic barrier, but Maten's attack proved to powerful, shattering the feeble shield and striking Papa dead center in the chest. "GRRAAGH!" The old fox demon was thrown backwards with his feet staying planted firmly on the ground, kicking up grass and dirt.

"NO!" Mama screamed, seeing her mate in pain. Shippou held onto her tighter as though he could keep her stuck in place with sheer willpower. As the words came out of her mouth he silently repeated them, as if reading the script of some tragic play. "Listen to me, Shippou. I want you to let go of me." Shippou sniffed, pressing himself against her as hard as possible. She couldn't follow the next lines of the act if he was with her. But no matter how tightly he held on she eventually tore him out of the embrace, removing an enchanted acorn from a pouch at her hip and slipped it into Shippou's tiny hands. "This spell will protect you."

"M-Mama...." He sobbed as he felt her lips on his forehead in warm kiss capable of coming from only one's mother. "P-Please...don't. You'll..." Before he could finish he was shoved aside by his mother as she plucked a fallen leaf from the earth, using her fox-magic to transform the item into a shield just in time to block the blade of Hiten's spear. "GO NOW SHIPPOU!!!"

Hiten smirked as his victim struggled to hold him back. "Looks like the wench is a fiery one. You'll make an excellent conquest, woman!"

"........." Shippou's feet were rooted to the ground as the scene unfolded itself before him. The little fox demon had always imagined doing things differently if he had the chance. He would picture a bigger, stronger, and braver Shippou rushing into battle as he'd seen Inuyasha and the others do so often. He'd march right up to the Thunder Brothers and make them truly regret ever laying their despicable hands on his family. Perhaps he'd sick Kirara on them, sprout razor-sharp talons like Inuyasha to rip them to bloody pieces, summon a wind tunnel like Miroku and watch as the two demons plunged headfirst into the obsidian abyss. He would grin at the thought of Kagome's arrows piercing their foul hides, reducing them to a worthless pile of purified refuse. Yet right before him were the two monsters that he'd always believed got off way too easy, and he was powerless; a quivering, sobbing mess that was absolutely petrified with terror.

Maten lashed out at Papa with his dreaded ax, finding pay dirt this time when his blade cut a gash into the fox demon. "AAAAAUUUGH!!!!" The fox demon staggered, gripping the hideous wound in his chest. His blood flowed freely in crimson streams. "S-Shippou...I-I-I..unngh...." He wouldn't get the chance to finish as Maten's ax buried itself into his gut. "SHIPPUUUUUURGLE!!!" Papa body went rigid as a chuckling Maten freed his weapon from the newly made corpse's stomach, bringing a great deal of intestines and fluids with it. Papa collapsed into a wet heap; eyes frozen in an expression of agony.

Mama let out a pathetic wail at the loss of her mate, ceasing momentarily in her struggles with Hiten which gave him plenty time to rip apart her kimono. She lay that way, staring at her husband's corpse in detached shock; completely unaware to vile demon ravaging her exposed breasts.

"A fine pelt!" Maten bellowed, pulling a sharp dagger from his belt. "Fine indeed. You won't mind me relinquishing you of it my dear man? Will you?" With an almost giddy look in his eyes did Maten set about the gruesome task. His blade sunk into Papa's flesh with surprising ease, and as Maten expertly maneuvered his dagger the flesh and muscle parted like water.

Up the torso.

Past the neck.

Around the skull.

Then with one vicious tug Papa's shiny pelt was ripped bloodily from his body.

"Ah! Simply marvelous!" Maten gave his work an appraising look. "A fine sash it will make!"

And Shippou watched.

'Just like you did last time, eh youngling?'

The little fox demon's face was wet with tears and mucous. His eyes glazed over and his skin pale; he was going into shock.

'You failed them again'

The ground behind Shippou split opened as a giant claw emerged, towering over the comatose child. Spindly digits flexed and aimed four razor sharp talons at their quivering prey.

'You deserve death! Allow me to reunite you with your family!'

The blades came down....then ceased their attack as Kirara dove in and separated the demonic hand from its arm with one vicious snap of her powerful jaws. The green stump of an arm spasm as a steady stream of crimson spurted onto the grass.

'RRRAAAAAUUUUGH!!!' The voice seemed to come from everywhere. "MEDDLING FOOLS!!!"

Maten charged, swinging his ax only to hit air as Kirara leapt away. "Another lovely pelt for my collection! Don't be shy! Come to Maten!"

That's exactly what Kirara did as she tackled the lumbering demon to the ground, sinking her fangs into Maten's pudgy throat, and with one mighty tug ripped apart flesh. Maten gurgled, grabbing feebly at his exposed windpipe. Kirara growled approvingly then hissed in surprise as she was hoisted into the air. Behind her stood both Mama and Hiten melded into one grotesque form of limbs. Mama/Hiten snarled, tightening their bone crushing bear-hug. Kirara spat and struggled as a cackling Shigeru materialized. "Bah! Disgusting rat!" Shigeru grinned toothily. "Sorry...no heroics this time!" And then Mama/Hiten screeched, releasing their hold on Kirara as they were engulfed in blue flames. "WHAT!?" Shigeru balked at where the fireball had come from, meeting gazes with Shippou.

There was no mistaking the look in the fox demon's eyes. Shippou shook with a rage never before seen, and as his body took on a cerulean glow Kirara wisely flew out of his path. "You...." He glared at the dream demon. Being forced to watch his parents fate then learn that it had all been nothing more than an illusion. "....you....I HATE YOU!!!" He launched a blast of foxfire that would of made his father proud, blasting the shocked Shigeru into a tree. With a primal scream Shippou pounced onto the paralyzed demon, tearing into his scaly flesh with his tiny claws. "DIE!!DIE!!DIE!!DIE!!DIE!!DIE!!" He gouged out eyes, ripped apart flesh, digging so deep that his nails scrapped bone. It was only when Kirara gently tugged his tail that he stopped, staring at the neko fire cat with red and teary eyes. "K-Kirara?" The fire cat snuggled her face into his chest, purring softly effectively calming the child. As if understanding Shippou held her tightly. "Thanks, Kirara."

"Shippou! You're alright!" Sango's eyes were tired but her bright smile more than made up for it.

The fox demon blinked, sitting up in her lap. "Sango? Was it a dream?"

"You were trapped in some sort of nightmare by Shigeru. Luckily, Inuyasha snapped me out of it." The demon slayer replied. "He must of found you too."

"No it was Kirara." Shippou tensed at the scent of blood. It was then he noticed Miroku for the first time, tending to an unconscious Kagome. "Kagome!" He slipped out of Sango's grasp and ran to the girl from the future's side. Never before had Kagome appeared so pale....and the scars. Shippou couldn't bare to look at them."M-Miroku? Is....is she..."

"Do not fear, Shippou. Kagome is far too stubborn to be killed so easily." the monk assured him even while thinking silently, 'But if Inuyasha doesn't wake her soon....'
