In Which A Girl Gets Some Supernatural Help
Kagome’s gaze went in and out of focus as she stared off into space with a peaceful expression on her beautiful face. She was in deep thought about her situation. Though no one in her family knew it, she felt quite useless because of her sickness.
You see, Kagome’s family is the major Christian group to come out of Japan. Though Japan is not the major religion in the country it does have some Christians and her family had to be biggest batch you could find. They sang many spirit lifting songs, though they weren’t extremely popular nor famous. Her father was the best tenor in the group, he used to sing and play guitar in a very popular band whose popularity died out about twenty years ago. Her father never talked much about why the group broke up.
Kagome’s doctor is good friends with the family and takes care of Kagome and guides her through any treatment required for her illness. Kagome has throat cancer, which is why she feels so guilty about her family’s singing group not being popular. Before Kagome was diagnosed with cancer she was a great singer, and the group got a lot of popularity because of the young girl who sang so beautifully but now she was too weak to even hold a note half as loud as she used to hold them.
Dr. Suikotsu smiled down at Kagome, noticing the way she seemed to stare off in space with a look of melancholy. He didn’t know what plagued her but he found her lack of attention amusing. “Kagome…? Did you hear me?” asked Suikotsu.
Kagome looked up at him sharply and blinked at him. He saw her blank look and laughed. “I said do you want to come with me to watch the auditions for the new soprano?” asked Suikotsu. Kagome’s face softened, her cousin, the head soprano, had to quit the group so she could attend college so now the family needed a good soprano and were holding auditions for one. This news bothered Kagome even more because before she got cancer in her throat she was a soprano.
Kagome looked up at him and seemed to hesitate before she spoke, her voice soft. “Can I audition?” she asked. The question obviously made Suikotsu uncomfortable because he looked away from her with a serious face.
“You know you can’t…your father wouldn’t allow it…” when there was silence Suikotsu sighed heavily and looked at Kagome pleadingly. “Please Kagome, let me remove the tumor.” Dr. Suikotsu pleaded. Kagome looked up at him with a smile.
“No thank you Dr. Suikotsu…If I have the surgery I will lose my voice, then I wont be able to sing.” Said Kagome with a shrug. Suikotsu looked like a deflated balloon. Kagome continued to smile at him like she wasn’t close to death.
Suikotsu sighed and began to pack up his equipment into his bag. “Well, any way, you seemed to be doing pretty good but your condition hasn’t gotten any better. I hope that when I come to examine you next week that you will have changed your mind about the operation.” Suikotsu walked to the door and looked back at Kagome, he gave her a smile and left with a faint “Bye Kagome.” Trailing behind him.
Kagome smiled and stared down at the blankets of her bed. Dr. Suikotsu didn’t understand; she didn’t want to keep her voice JUST because she wanted her family to be famous. She had other reasons too…more personal reasons. Kagome sighed and held back the tears that were burning the backs of her eyes. ‘No…I will not cry!’ she thought determined and with great skill she was able to draw her face back to the peaceful way it was before.
“If only there was a way I could audition…” Kagome whispered. Kagome noticed something moving out of the corner of her eye and she looked over in surprise. The blank wall of her room appeared to be making ripples like when a rock falls in a still lake, and out of the ripples came what looked like the leg of a person.
Kagome stared in awe as a boy a little older than her came through her wall and stood in front of her bed staring. Then a woman came out of her wall as well, both looked REALLY weird!
The girl wore a skimpy kind of playboy bunny costume with a dress instead of a one piece bathing suit deal; she wore black fishnet stockings to go with the Lolita dress and large boots. She had long brown hair tied back in a low ponytail and a top hat on her head that had two brown bunny ears poking out of holes in the hat.
The boy really caught Kagome’s attention. He was quite handsome, with striking masculine features in his facial structure but a slight boyish look as well. He had long silver hair and two silver doggy ears on top of his head. His eyes were amber in color. His out fit consisted of baggy black cargos, a under shirt that stopped half way down his chest exposing his abs and belly button. The shirt over it was open and more like a jacket but it also had fake wings sticking out of the back. He had a head band under his bangs. The gloves on his hands were black but looked like they had clawed tips on his fingers.
“See! I told you I could find her!” the dog boy said victoriously to the bunny girl. The girl rolled her eyes and then looked at Kagome curiously; she then looked behind her as if to say “What is she looking at?”
“Who are you and how did you pass through my wall like that?!” Kagome asked, slightly panicky. This caused the two animal people to panic.
“She can see us?!” the boy screamed at the bunny girl.
“This cant be right! We are suppose to be invisible to humans!” the bunny girl said angrily back. The boy scoffed. “Feh.”
“Hello?” Kagome spoke up waiting for some answers. The two people looked at her and the girl looked to the dog boy pointedly.
He sighed and stepped forward. “We are shinigami and we are the ones who bring souls to judgment before the Big Guy.” Said dog boy. Kagome’s face went sad and she stared off into space with a melancholy smile again.
“Oh…I see…you’re death and it is time for me to die…” Kagome whispered. The way she said this struck a chord in the boy for some reason and he looked away with slightly saddened features but then he seemed to remember something and he went back to scowling.
“Feh! You arent dying now, you have about a year to live actually.” Said the dog boy. “We are here because there was a prophecy foretelling that on this day you would meet someone who would prevent you from dying in a years time. We are here to prevent that from happening.”
The girl stepped forward now. “Since you can see us we expect your cooperation…I’m Sango and this is Inuyasha.” Said Sango. “Now by order of Death we are to remain in your company until we can find evidence that your death will not be prevented!” Sango said professionally. Sango opened her eyes from their previously closed state to see Kagome gone. She wielded around to see her foot passing through the ripples in the wall. Sango pushed Inuyasha who seemed to have been dozing off while she was talking. Inuyasha ran to the wall and jumped out after her but when he got on the other side he didn’t see her.
“Damn it! You were supposed to be watching her!” Inuyasha yelled at Sango as she passed through the wall to the outside part of the house. Neither of them saw the girl running off.
Kagome ran around downtown Tokyo for the longest time. She was able to grab a wallet on the way out and she bought a whole new outfit so she could change out of her pajamas. She then had to hide from the two messengers of death while she tried to make her way to the auditions. ‘I have to try to get my father to let me try out!” Kagome thought desperately. She had to duck in an alley five times because of the shinigami floating by.
When Kagome made it in front of the music hall she grinned happily. She was panting slightly from the stress on her body. She did walk a long ways…
Something caught Kagome’s eye. There were two plushy like chibi dolls. One was a bunny and one was a dog. Kagome reached out to touch the dog when all of the sudden it came alive and grabbed her slender hand. “Gotcha!” the dog yelled in a familiar voice and with a puff of red smoke Inuyasha appeared in front of Kagome with a firm grasp on her arm.
“You thought you could run away wench?” Inuyasha growled. The bunny plushy transformed into Sango who glared at Kagome in irritation. Kagome smiled up at Inuyasha, unknowingly making his chest tighten strangely.
“I just…wanted to try asking my dad if I could audition…” Kagome said softly. The defeated tone of her voice made Inuyasha’s grip on her arm loosen a little. “You see…before I die…I want to make my family’s singing group famous…they…deserve it…” Kagome whispered to her self, her raven bangs shadowing her large blue eyes. Suddenly Kagome’s mood brightened. “Hey! I know! You can transform yourself right?” Inuyasha nodded. “Well maybe you could transform me! So that I can audition as someone else and maybe have a chance!”
Inuyasha was silent for a minute while Sango seemed adamantly against the idea. “NO way! Our job is to keep an eye on you and—!”
“If I help you to get into this audition…and if you don’t make it, then you have to promise to do EVERYTHING we say and when the time comes allow us to take your soul without a fight…” Inuyasha said seriously. Kagome looked up at him with wide eyes and nodded in agreement. Sango stood in stunned silence.
“I promise…” Kagome said softly.
“But! Inuyasha! Are you insane?! You cant do this!” Sango protested.
“Shut up Sango.” Inuyasha said flatly. Inuyasha reached into his pocket and pulled out what looked like two halves of an empty shell of a capsule. Kagome watched curiously as Inuyasha removed the black gloves to reveal normal human hands, no claws. He cut is palm and allowed blood to flow into the capsule; he then sealed it and looked at Kagome holding out the pill. “Alright…tell me what you want to look like…” Inuyasha said.
Kagome thought about it for a minute. “I want to look like I did when I was 12, but I want to have Sango’s hair color and have glasses so my parents wont recognize my younger self.” Kagome said. Inuyasha pondered this for a minute and then let her take the pill.
“You will feel a tingling feeling, but it will go away.” Inuyasha said boredly. Kagome swallowed the pill and waited for what came next. Inuyasha snapped his fingers and with a puff of red smoke Kagome now stood a great deal shorter, less developed, brown haired, and large round glasses perched on her nose.
Sango giggled and patted the young Kagome on the head. “You’re so kawaii!” she laughed. Kagome laughed and looked in the reflection of the glass windows on the building. She looked up at Inuyasha eagerly and hugged him, making the tall boy blush.
“Thank you Mr. Death!” Kagome said happily. Inuyasha’s eye twitched in irritation.
“It’s Inuyasha, wench.”
