Epilogue: The Return
In front of the house, two children played; a silver haired, golden eyed girl and her dark haired, dark eyed brother. She held a ball and tried to get her little brothers attention. He stood chewing on a finger, and looking everywhere but at her. They had been out here a while playing this game, and he was getting bored.
“Come on Ichiro,” Michiko said. “Pay attention. I'm going to throw you the ball again.”
Sometimes Michiko wondered how come her parents gave her a brother like Ichiro. Not only did he show hardly any of his youkai heritage, he was easily distracted. She tossed the ball up and down in her hands, and sighed.
“Someone is coming,” Ichiro said.
“Stop that, you are supposed to be learning how to play ball,” Michiko replied.
“It looks like Shippo, and there are two strangers with him,” Ichiro said, pointing behind her.
That got Michiko's attention, she dropped the ball and spun around. A man with red hair that could only be Shippo was approaching, with a young woman who looked like a hanyou by her coloring, and an older human woman. She broke into an excited grin, and began to run towards them.
“Ichiro, go get Mama and Papa!” Michiko called. “It is Shippo!”
The little boy dashed into the house to look for his parents. He ran into the cooking room, and found his mother sorting herbs. She looked up with eyebrows at the wildness on her sons face. In his excitement he ran right into her, and she put her arms up to catch him.
“Mama, Shippo came back,” Ichiro said breathlessly. “And he has two ladies with him!”
“Oh my, that is wonderful news - I was so worried!” Kagome exclaimed, rising to her feet.
“Where is Papa?” Ichiro said. “Michi told me to get him too.”
“He is over at Uncle Miroku and Aunt Sango's house,” Kagome said. “Go get all of them, bring them back here.”
Nodding, Ichiro dashed out of the house. Kagome followed him out the door, and saw Michiko leading Shippo by the hand towards her, a big smile on her face. And just as Ichiro had said, he was not alone. Two women who looked familiar accompanied him. The younger one looked to be around Shippo's age, and was obviously a hanyou. Violet eyes..?
Kagome was so flooded with relief to see Shippo again, she felt giddy. She could not help running up to the group, as excited as her children. Michiko let go of Shippo's hand as she took him in her arms, and he wrapped his arms around her in return.
“Thank kami you're back,” Kagome said. “You were gone so long, I was worried about you!”
“I'm sorry I worried you,” Shippo replied. “But I am okay. And I have some good news. This is my bride to be, Shiori, and her mother.”
Breaking away from Shippo, Kagome regarded the two women as they bowed to her respectfully. Her mouth parted in surprise and wonder.
“Now I know why you looked familiar!” Kagome exclaimed. “What a wonderful surprise - I am so happy for you!”
“So, our wayward scoundrel of a kitsune has returned,” InuYasha said. “And with a mate no less!”
They turned to face the group approaching them. InuYasha held Ichiro's hand, and behind them were Miroku, Sango and their twins.
“A bat hanyou mate, at that.” Miroku said. “It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance again Shiori. You have grown into quite a lovely young woman.”
Shiori glanced at Shippo and blushed. She felt a bit overwhelmed by these two families, but she was warmed by how close they all seemed. She bowed to the new group.
“It is a pleasure to meet you all,” Shiori said. “And thank you for your kind words of welcome.”
“We are like one big family,” Kagome replied. “And we are so happy to welcome you and your mother into it. It seems I have a marriage ceremony to arrange!”
Everyone laughed happily, except InuYasha. He just shook his head ruefully. Who would have thought, the runt actually found a mate in his first rut. Well, now at least they could build him a house of his own and he would no longer live with InuYasha's family! The hanyou grinned…
