Inuyasha walked into Kaede's hut, five pairs of eyes following him to the other side of the room. He sat down, cross-legged and cross-armed, looking at the floor. Shippo walked over to him and poked his knee.
“Uh, Inuyasha, are you okay?” he asked.
“Kagome ran away again…” replied Inuyasha. Everyone groaned. Shippo jumped up and down, tiny hands balled into fists and flailing up and down rapidly.
“Inuyasha, how can you be so stupid?! You made Kagome leave again, just like last time! OW!” Inuyasha had whacked Shippo over the head with his fist again, as he often did whenever the little fox demon got on his nerves. Tears of pain welled up in Shippo's eyes as he rubbed the huge bump on top of his head.
“What happened with ye two, Inuyasha?” asked Kaede.
“Hmph… Apparently Kagome is too good to travel with a half breed like me anymore,” huffed Inuyasha.
“What do you mean?” asked Sango. Inuyasha closed his eyes.
“She hates me for what I did to her… She said I broke her heart into a million pieces when she saw Kikyo and I together…” he replied.
“Oh, I see,” said Miroku, arms crossed. “Well, we'd better go look for her then.” Inuyasha looked up then looked back down and closed his eyes.
“No. Let her go. Sesshomaru will get her. She's traveling with him anyway, remember?” he pointed out. The others sighed.
“I hope she'll be okay… Demon numbers have been increasing since Naraku disappeared-“ started Sango. She stopped herself from saying more because of a horrifying realization. Inuyasha twitched his ears and looked up.
“Naraku! Kagome has jewel shards with her remember? He'll go after her!” he realized, jumping to his feet. Shippo crossed his arms and looked up at the half demon.
“And you didn't want to go look for her, yeah right…” he mocked. Inuyasha clobbered him over the head again with his fist, giving Shippo's bump a bump of its own.
“It's not that, all right?! I just don't want Naraku getting the remaining shards for himself! Who knows what will happen if he completes the Shikon Jewel!” shouted Inuyasha. Shippo nodded, rubbing his new, more painful bump, tears streaming down his cheeks. Inuyasha took the Tetsusaiga away from the wall and placed it into his sash, running out the door. Sango, Miroku, Shippo, and Kirara followed.
“Which direction did she go?” asked Miroku. Inuyasha led everyone to the outskirts of the village and pointed to where Kagome went.
“She went in that direction, lets go!” Inuyasha ran off at full speed to the forest, while Shippo, Miroku, and Sango rode on Kirara, who had transformed into her larger form. I'll find you, Kagome… I'll find you and apologize for all I've put you through, promised Inuyasha in his mind.
On the opposite side of the village, Jaken and Ah-Un were still waiting for Sesshomaru, Rin and Kagome to return. Jaken yawned.
“Where could he have gotten to?” he asked himself. Ah-Un sniffed the air, trying to pick up Sesshomaru's scent, and it succeeded. The dragon grunted in its throats, trying to get Jaken's attention. Jaken looked up at the dragon.
“What's wrong with you?” he asked. Ah-Un stood up, causing Jaken to fall backwards. Jaken got to his feet, facing Ah-Un and waved the Staff of Two Heads at it.
“What ails you, Ah-Un?! Is it Lord Sesshomaru?” wondered Jaken out loud. Ah-Un nodded its two heads. Jaken gasped and climbed onto Ah-Un's back.
“Where, Ah-Un, where?! Take me to him at once!” he demanded. The dragon became airborne and flew off to the north, where Sesshomaru was headed, looking for Kagome.
Meanwhile, Sesshomaru and Rin walked through the Forest of Inuyasha, where Inuyasha had been fixed to the Sacred Tree for fifty years. Rin looked around.
“Lord Sesshomaru, I don't see Kagome anywhere,” she said hopelessly. Sesshomaru could smell Kagome's scent on the wind as it blew through the trees.
“Her scent is in the air. It appears that she has headed for the north,” said Sesshomaru calmly. Rin gasped as she realized something. The north! That's where my village was, she thought.
“Lord Sesshomaru, that's where my village was, in the north!” Sesshomaru looked down at the little girl.
“Yes, I realized that,” he said. The only thing he could hear was the sound of his and Rin's breathing, the occasional bird sound, and the rustle of leaves in the wind. Kagome, why are you headed to the northern province? Wondered Sesshomaru. It was then that he passed the Sacred Tree. He stopped walking and stood in front of it, looking up through the branches. Rin looked up with him, wondering what he was looking at.
“What is this tree, my lord?” she asked curiously. Without looking at her, Sesshomaru replied, putting his hand to the spot where Inuyasha had been when he was shot with Kikyo's sacred arrow.
“Fifty years ago, the half demon, Inuyasha, was put under a spell at this very spot. He and the priestess Kikyo had fallen in love with each other, and promised to spend their future together. They had been very close, until something turned them against each other. Kikyo began attacking my foolish brother. Inuyasha, believing that Kikyo had betrayed him, brought an attack on her village. He stole the Shikon No Tama, and made his escape. Before he could get away, Kikyo shot one of her sacred arrows at him. The arrow pierced Inuyasha's heart and fixed him to this tree. And here he remained, for fifty years,” he explained. Rin was hooked on his every word.
“But how did he break the spell, my lord? How did the spell get broken?” she asked. Kagome's face appeared in Sesshomaru's mind, and he knew the answer. He closed his eyes.
“Kagome broke it. When she first arrived in this world. Since she possesses the powers of a priestess, she was able to break the spell.” Rin gasped.
“Kagome broke the spell on Inuyasha? She must've been powerful even when she first came here!” she exclaimed. Sesshomaru nodded.
“Yes… Come, lets go,” he said, stepping away from the Sacred Tree and walking away from it. Rin nodded and followed him.
