Kagome and Kirara were very close to Sesshomaru now. Kagome could sense his demonic aura clearly and asked Kirara to fly lower. Kirara nodded her head and flew down so that her paws were just bearly touching the top leaves of the trees. Kagome's hair whipped the air behind her as she looked around for any signs of Sesshomaru. She could see his castle to her left in the distance but his presence wasn't coming from that direction. She had a feeling that it was coming from directly below her. She gathered up her courage and looked over Kirara's side. Sure enough, she saw her dog demon boyfriend in a small clearing with a hot spring in it. He was sitting beside a tree with his eyes closed. Kagome smirked.
“Perfect. Take me down, Kirara. But not right in the clearing. How about right there?” she questioned in no more than a whisper, pointing to a small grove a trees near where Sesshomaru was. Kirara let out a small hissing noise and dove down to the area where Kagome wanted to go. She was about to give Sesshomaru a little surprise.
Sesshomaru felt horrible. He had almost killed Kagome in the past and he hadn't even apologized. Kagome hadn't said anything about it, but something told him that she hadn't forgotten it. But now he would never see Kagome again, and apologizing was not an option now. He would do anything to see Kagome once more. He supposed that his father's spirit had shown him the memories so he would realize his mistakes and understand more fully that people and demons alike could change. And in his opinion, Inu no Taisho had succeeded in doing just that.
Kagome stalked very quietly to the clearing and hid in the bushes, watching Sesshomaru. She noticed his troubled expression and wondered why he was being so still. His eyes were still closed; just what Kagome wanted. Nows as good a time as any, she thought. She moved herself into a kneeling position so she was almost completely hidden by the large bushes and held her bow at the ready, pulling an arrow out of her quiver and nocking it to the string. She aimed.
Sesshomaru's eyes jolted open when he caught a familiar scent in the area. He jumped to his feet and sniffed the air. He snarled when he realized where he had picked up this scent before; it was Kikyo's scent. But then he remembered that Kagome had killed Kikyo with an arrow. I don't understand. How can Kikyo be back? He wondered. He looked around and saw an arrow fly out from the bushes and embed itself in the tree he had been sitting at moments before. He pulled out the Tokijin and walked towards the bushes.
“Come out, Kikyo… I know you're here,” he called, his right hand clenched tightly around the Tokijin's hilt.
Kagome smirked. Good, he thinks I'm Kikyo, she thought. Deciding to change her voice a little to sound more like Kikyo's she stepped out of the bushes, coming face to face with Sesshomaru.
“Hello, Lord Sesshomaru,” she said in as much of a Kikyo-like tone as possible. Sesshomaru got into a battle stance, being as cautious as possible. He knew what Kikyo was capable of and couldn't be too careful.
“What business do you have with me, Kikyo? If nothing, leave now or be slain,” threatened Sesshomaru, holding the blade of his sword out in front of him, pointing it at Kagome. “I refuse to let one of your arrows pierce my chest again!” Kagome laughed and dropped her bow and quiver of arrows on the ground, moving the Tokijin's blade out of the way with the tip of her left index finger, stepping closer to Sesshomaru.
Sesshomaru could feel a small bead of sweat roll down his cheek. What am I doing? This is Kikyo, not Kagome… So why am I not attacking? He wondered. But he found himself too paralyzed to move. He watched as `Kikyo' moved herself directly in front of him, moving her hands up his armored stomach and chest. Sesshomaru's fingers tensed around the hilt of his sword. He wanted to get revenge on Kikyo for trying to kill Kagome, but for some reason he could not bring himself to use the Tokijin against her.
Kagome leaned her face closer to Sesshomaru's, closing her eyes slowly as she did so.
Sesshomaru's eyes widened. “What are you doing now, Priestess Kikyo?” he questioned cautiously. But before he could say anything else, `Kikyo's' lips met his. Sesshomaru broke the kiss quickly, taking a few steps back and jumped away from Kagome, holding the Tokijin's blade out towards her again, an angry expression on his face.
“How dare you touch me! Do not think I have forgotten what you tried to do to Kagome!” he yelled.
Kagome smiled and reached her hand back, taking hold of the ribbon that was holding her hair back like Kikyo's. With one slow movement, the ribbon fell and her hair spilled loose over her shoulders.
“I am not who you think I am, Sesshomaru,” she said.
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed, unconvinced. “Is that so? There is no one else you could be. It is true that you and Kagome look strikingly similar, but you can't be her. She went back to her world last night, and she can never come back,” he explained.
Kagome sighed and muttered, “Sesshomaru…”
This got Sesshomaru's attention. It was the way `Kikyo' said his name that made him lose some of his doubt that she was who he thought she was. Also, the woman's voice had changed from cold and eerie to sweet and innocent. He lowered his sword's blade a bit, staring at Kagome with hopeful eyes.
“Kagome…?” he asked with a trace of uncertainty in his voice.
Kagome smiled and nodded. “If you still don't believe me, come here.”
Sesshomaru kept his sword out and walked slowly over to Kagome, a suspicious expression on his face.
When Sesshomaru was close enough to her, Kagome reached a little bit under the collar of her kimono and pulled something out; it was the Sacred Jewel.
Sesshomaru let out a small gasp when he saw the jewel. That was sure proof that it was Kagome all along. He knew that Kagome had taken the Sacred Jewel with her back to her own time. Because of that, it would've been impossible for Kikyo to have it. Sesshomaru had been right in front of Kagome for a full five minutes and he hadn't known it. He surmised that because Kagome was wearing one of Kikyo's kimonos, he immediately picked up the dead priestess's scent and not Kagome's.
“Kagome… you…” he started softly.
Kagome nodded. “Yes, Sesshomaru. I came back.”
“But how?” questioned Sesshomaru, still in shock.
“I'm pretty sure you know about the Sacred Jewel's special power. It can grant any wish, and I wished to be able to come back here all I want,” explained Kagome happily. She had tears in her eyes and looked like she was about to cry.
Sesshomaru couldn't believe it. It was too good to be true. His eyes held so much emotion in them that Kagome couldn't tell what he was feeling. Kagome threw her arms around him, sobbing heavily against his armor. But they weren't tears of sadness this time; they were tears of joy. Sesshomaru stumbled back a little bit, looking down at Kagome, uncertain of what to do.
“Oh, Sesshomaru! I missed you so much! I couldn't take it anymore, I had to come back to see you and the others!” she bawled. Sesshomaru's expression softened and he dropped the Tokijin, throwing his arms around Kagome and pulling her close to him.
“Kagome, there is something that I have wanted to say to you… But you left before I could tell you,” he mentioned. Kagome opened her eyes and peered up at Sesshomaru. She felt her heart skip a beat. What's he going to tell me? She wondered. Sesshomaru took a deep breath and stated calmly and truthfully, “Kagome, I… I… I love you.” Kagome's eyes widened at this and she smiled.
“Really, Sesshomaru? You love me?” she asked quietly, making sure she heard right. Sesshomaru nodded, holding Kagome by the shoulders now.
“Yes… I wanted to ask you something as well.”
“What is it?”
“Back when I first met you… when I was seeking to claim Tetsusaiga as my own… I did some ghastly things to you… Can you ever forgive me?” questioned Sesshomaru. Kagome blinked, a surprised expression on her face.
“Of course I forgive you, Sesshomaru. Yes, what you did was wrong, but that was a long time ago. If I hadn't forgiven you, I wouldn't have come to the west to see you in the first place,” she stated. “You've changed for the better, Sesshomaru, and that's why I believe in you.” Sesshomaru smiled and slid his palms down Kagome's arms. When he reached her hands, he took hold of them, grasping them gently.
“Kagome Higurashi, will you be my mate?” he asked. Kagome's cheeks flushed bright pink at Sesshomaru's final question. She considered the offer carefully. If she married Sesshomaru, she would be able to be with him for as long as she lived. But there was one problem: she was underage and couldn't marry until she was eighteen. She sighed.
“I'm sorry, Sesshomaru… But I can't… I'm fifteen, and in my era, I have to be eighteen in order to marry anyone…”
Sesshomaru frowned and nodded understandingly.
“I understand, Kagome,” he said. He had a feeling that he would be turned down, and he was almost right. Kagome giggled and shook her head, placing a small kiss on Sesshomaru's lips.
“Sesshomaru, you're making it sound like I refuse to marry you at all. I meant that we have to wait until I'm eighteen before I can marry you,” she explained.
Sesshomaru's spirit lifted at this. Kagome wasn't saying no, she was just going to put the marriage on hold for a few years. “Very well. So, we wait three years to wed?” Kagome nodded.
“Yes. But I know how to make it up to you,” she mentioned. Sesshomaru cocked an eyebrow at her.
“And hows that?” he asked curiously. Kagome whistled and called, “Kirara! You can come out now!” Within minutes, Kirara ran out of the bushes, still in her large form, and stood beside her. She was holding something between her teeth, and Sesshomaru saw that it was Kagome's backpack. Kagome took the backpack and bowed politely to the demon cat. Kirara let out a small, sad hiss and nuzzled Kagome, the tips of her ears drooping. Kagome stroked Kirara softly, saying, “It's okay, Kirara, I'll see you again.” She hugged Kirara's neck, tears dripping from her eyes.
When Kagome let go of her, Kirara let out a roar and took to the air, leaving Sesshomaru and Kagome all alone. Kagome put her backpack on and looked up at Sesshomaru.
“I have decided to live and travel with you whenever I'm in this era,” she revealed. Sesshomaru was overjoyed.
“You will?” Kagome nodded. Sesshomaru smiled and grabbed Kagome abruptly, kissing her passionately, his eyes closed. Kagome kissed back, wrapping her arms around Sesshomaru's neck. Sesshomaru could not believe that Kagome would stay with him whenever she was in the Feudal era.
A few minutes later, their lips separated, leaving them with smiles on their faces. Sesshomaru bent down and picked up the Tokijin, placing it back at his sash. He wrapped his left arm around Kagome's waist and gazed down at her, a warm look in his eyes.
“Come Kagome, lets go home,” he whispered. Kagome nodded and the two set off to Sesshomaru's castle. Little did they know that many great adventures lie in wait for them just around the corner.
