A Pleasant Afternoon

Kagome sat under the shade of a tree. Her son Atae, tired after exploring the meadow, was curled up next to her, his silver head cushioned on her lap. She idly stroked his bangs.

A shadow fell over her. She looked up, and saw InuYasha looking down at her, his amber eyes light, and a small smile on his lips.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” she replied, patting the ground next to her. “You and Miroku got the roof done already?”

“Yeah,” he said, sitting next to her. “Didn’t take as long as I thought it would. Have a good time?”

“Uh-huh. Atae had to chase every bug or bird that came anywhere near him. He burned up a lot of energy.” She picked up InuYasha’s hand and laced her fingers through it. “I didn’t get many herbs collected, but there’ll be another time.”

“Yeah,” he said, snugging his fingers firmly around her hand.

For a little while, they sat together, enjoying the fine day and quiet, Then suddenly, InuYasha freed his hand, and then with both of them, gently cupped Kagome’s face, and gave her a long, lingering, tender kiss.

As he broke the kiss and pulled back a little, Kagome gazed up into his amber eyes, smiling up at him.

“What was that for?” she asked.

“Nothing special,” he said. “I was thinking of how good life is here, now, because you’re here to make it good.” He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close.

Suddenly, Atae lifted up his head, rubbed his eyes, and said brightly, “Daddy!”

“Hey, little guy! You woke up?” InuYasha said, reaching over and tousling his boy’s hair.

The little boy nodded, and crawled into his father’s lap. He looked over at Kagome. “I hungry.”

Kagome laughed a little, and stood up, picking up her herb basket. “I guess that means it’s time to go home.”

“Yeah. I’m kind of hungry, too,” the hanyou said.

“Like father, like son,” she said as she headed down the path back home.

InuYasha stood up, holding his son. The two exchanged amber glances. “Well, yeah,” he muttered, and hurried up to catch up with her.
