Mama Higurashi watched the blue flash of light fade from the well house as her daughter disappeared to meet her destiny, no time for graduation dinner. Grandpa left to take care of his duties, but she stood there, not yet ready to leave.
Images flashed into her mind as she leaned over the lip of the ancient well and peered into the darkness. She thought of the bright eyed little girl, her Kagome, coming into the world like a miracle of love between her and her husband, of the sad and weeping child she held in her arms the day he was taken away from them all, the giggling girl with her friends talking on the phone, going to school, growing up like a sunny flower. Sighing, she let herself fall to her knees, and rest her head on the well's lip. What a sight he was, the first time she saw the red-clad youkai boy - aggressive, angry, and yet even then, when she caught him in the doorway and rubbed his ears, she knew there was something about him that called for her to be calm and let matters take their course.
Reaching in her pocket, she pulled out the old scroll she had discovered years before in the shrine storehouse. Unfurling it, she read in the old style script: "The Tale of the Hanyou and the Miko: how a young girl from a faraway land freed him and together defeated the evil youkai Naraku."
It was hard being the mother of a legend. She rerolled the scroll and put it back in her pocket. Standing up, she looked once more into the depths of the well.
“You did well, little one. I love you. You and InuYasha have a beautiful life.”
