Baka

InuYasha found her standing in front of the house, past the veranda, dressed only in a thin, white kosode, staring out at the forest towards the Goshinboku. The moon, just a few days past full was shining down on her, and in the hot, sultry weather, the garment clung to her body, revealing her shape. He thought, with the way the light touched her hair, she looked like a Tennyo, a celestial being come down from the heavens, looking sad and forlorn with what she discovered.

His ears twitched, listening to the night sounds, and found nothing to worry about, but her scent, as wonderful to him as ever, was touched with sadness. “Is something wrong, Kagome?” he asked, walking up behind her and wrapping his arms around her.

“I don’t know. I just couldn’t sleep” she said, leaning back into his embrace. Closing her eyes, she sighed. “Maybe it’s just me.”

He tucked her under his chin. Her hair was soft against his bare chest. “Homesick?”

“Maybe. Just a little,” she replied, running smooth fingers over his left arm. “I’ve been gone two months now. I’ve never been away from my mother this long before. How did you know?”

He gently kissed the top of her head. “Oh, you get this look in your eyes sometimes. You were talking tonight with Sango about your mother, and I saw it again.” Nuzzling the side of her head with his cheek, he planted a small kiss on her shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he said.

Kagome turned to face him, bemused. “Why should you be sorry?” She touched him lightly on the cheek.

“You gave up so much to be with me. Your family, your time, all the nice things in your world. What do I have to give you to make up for that?” He looked down at her, his own eyes tinged with love and guilt. His arms encircled her, his hand brushing through her hair and down her back in gentle, motions, done as much to comfort him in his need to make it right as to calm her.

Kagome gave him a small, wry smile. “Baka. Three times you thought about keeping me in the future – once when you blocked the well with a tree, then after we got back from the fight with Kaou when you suggested I should stay at my mother’s until the fight with Naraku was over, and then when you left me with my mother after I wished away the Shikon no Tama. Every time I refused to stay in the future. Doesn’t that tell you something?”

He kissed her softly on the forehead. “So why am I finding you standing out here in the middle of the night feeling sad?”

“Any woman who married and moved away from her family does this. I want to be with you more than anything. It doesn’t mean I stopped caring for my mother or my family or even where I came from. And sometimes I really do miss them.” She leaned her head against his chest. “But I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat to be with you. “

His arms tightened around her. “Kagome,” he murmured. “My baka woman.”

“That’s right,” she said. “What are you going to do about it?”

Their lips met, softly, tenderly. “Take her home,” he said, “and show my baka woman what she really means to me.”
