A sakura petal drifted down from the tree overhead and landed on his knee. He picked it up and held it gently in his hand, smiled a little, then let it go.
A delicate hand reached over and rested on his red-clad shoulder. He looked up into a pair of blue gray eyes and met the quizzical look with a smile.
“A couple of days before you came home,” he said, “I was standing underneath this same tree, and a petal drifted by and landed in my hand. I felt that the Kami were playing with my heart, letting me fall in love with you, and then keeping is separated, and then tormenting me. It was like they were telling me all the beautiful things in my life hand passed. I said, ‘like Hell,’ and crushed the petal under my foot. I was not going to give up my hope.”
He sighed, then wrapped his arm around her. She rested her head against his shoulder. “Two days later, I was sitting over near Miroku’s house, and scented the most wonderful fragrance. Suddenly all my hope came rushing back to me as I ran like a crazy man to the well. And there you were.”
“Maybe you misunderstood what the Kami were telling you, InuYasha,” she said, resting her fingers on the hand that rested atop her swollen middle. “Maybe they were telling you that winter was over. After all, the sakura blossoms are the sign that spring is really here, and that summer is sure to follow.”
“Keh,” he said, resting his cheek on the top of her head. “You’re right. It’s been an amazing year.”
“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world,” she replied. She gave his hand a little squeeze. “Help me up?”
InuYasha stood up, and helped his very pregnant wife to her feet. “You all right?” he asked.
“Yeah,” she said smiling at him. “Don’t be a worrywart, InuYasha. Kaede tells me I’ve got probably two more weeks. I just have to go duck behind a bush.”
Letting her go and watching her waddle off to some nearby shrubs, he smiled and gave a happy sigh. Home. Wife. Family. All the things he never knew if he would ever have were here now. Maybe the Kami had been blessing him after all. He looked up into the branches of the sakura, and whispered, “Thank you.”
