She winced slightly as the slight smell of old blood reached her nose, and she approached cautiously as the smell grabbed her heart in a vice grip and squeezed it gently, bleeding from it her endless sympathy.
Somehow, hours ago she had lost sight of Kaede-baa-chan, and wandered deep in to the woods where hunters were usually found. They said it was dangerous territory, but Kagome felt confident that nothing would happen to her. In fact, she had been right so far… but something had happened to the poor oni in front of her.
But as her footsteps stirred up dead leaves, the snarling creature turned its gaze upon her and lashed out against the bindings it had as if in attempt to attack her. Kagome froze up in instinctual fear, unsure of whether or not to help the unfortunate creature… but her empathy tugged gently at her heartstrings as if in reminder, overriding her worry, and Kagome tried again.
She was never one to give up easily.
“There now… I'm not going to hurt you….” She spoke softly, hoping to soothe it with gentle tones. As she studied him, what appeared to be very much a him now that his hair was out of the way of everything, she was surprised to find two dog ears planted on the top of his head. Slowly, slowly... she had to be quiet... she lowered the basket of herbs to the ground and began to walk forward again.
“Come on... I won't hurt you…” she started again, holding her hands up to show she had nothing to injure him with, the universal symbol for peace and what she hoped would register in his panicked mind as placating. Red eyes snapped to her, studying her with calculating eyes and a low threatening growl. Now that Kagome had a closer look, she saw that he had been crucified… Her eyebrows drew together in sadness, tears filling her eyes. Nails dug in to his wrists and ankles, sutras placed over them to keep them in place. Kagome had recognized the sutras for what they were for she was training as a miko, and knew these were decently powerful sutras at that.
Shaking her head somewhat angrily, she muttered quietly, “Stupid people… take too much from western traditions… this is sick…”
Now that she was right next to him, Kagome tenderly placed her hand upon his wrist to examine the damage done to him. She chose to ignore the growling in her ear, the warm breaths that were sent her way. The tears in her eyes grew when she saw slight infection had settled in, and without a second thought she ripped the sutra off from his wrist.
No sooner had she done that, than a hand came flying forward, allowing the nail to rip through his skin and completely through his wrist. It grabbed her throat, bringing her face right next to his, the claws pressing into her throat and leaving red crescents in their wake. Kagome stilled herself, trying not to move too much or she might be seen as a threat.
She knew this man was dangerous… she didn't know why she felt compelled to help him… but she had started, and in no way was she going to stop helping until she was finished.
To her shock, she felt him sniffing her all over the face, as a dog might. She stiffened a fraction further in response and her breathing became labored. She could feel those dangerous fangs brushing across the apples of her cheeks now and again, very aware if he so felt inclined he could use them to main her in ways she didn't care to imagine at the moment.
The growling was much lower, and Kagome could have sworn she saw confusion flit through his eyes briefly before he dropped her to the ground. Kagome hacked, grabbing her sore throat with a hand and frowned a little at the small trickles of blood that were present. They were still insignficant, but they smarted.
What mattered more at the moment was apparently he hadn't seen her as a threat, so she continued what she had set out to do with determination. She hastily ripped the sutras from his ankles, and then from his other wrist and backed up quickly. The youkai instantly tore himself from the tree as he had done with his one hand, and leaped at her in what seemed a bloodlust, causing her heart to slow to a stop...
… only to fall to the ground unconscious a mere moment later. Kagome's eyes widened with fear for him and of him, concern flooding her as she saw blood spill in pools from his newly opened wounds.
“Kami-sama... Who would do this to him…?”
Kagome knelt down tenatively, covering his nude form with her cloak with shaking hands. She knew what she needed to do… She had to go get help.
Frantically, Kagome turned around and started to run back in the general direction of the village, hoping she found help in time.

Prologue: What…?
Kagome stared, wide-eyed and speechless in disbelief at the creature before her. She clutched her basket of herbs tightly, her knuckles turning white. Hesitation flitted through her mind like a captured bird as the oni struggled, fighting against the binds it was placed in vehemently. At the moment it was getting close to dark, and as the sun set it cast red rays of light through the trees and distributed shadows of leaves in patterns against the rock to her left…She winced slightly as the slight smell of old blood reached her nose, and she approached cautiously as the smell grabbed her heart in a vice grip and squeezed it gently, bleeding from it her endless sympathy.
